I am convinced if David had won against Bellew we would have seen the documentary
That's interesting. I remember Haye saying in an interview that he had made a documentary that showed all the injuries he had had behind the scenes. I wondered why it never came out.

Interestingly, after the second Bellew - Haye fight, my brother in law (who I have now drawn into boxing) watched the Haye - Macrinelli fight immediately afterwards. My brother in law, who hadn't seen that fight before said: " Good God, Haye is about 5 times faster here".

He concluded by saying that all the Bellew - Haye fights showed us was that Bellew could beat a lame Haye.
Yeah, I'm pretty certain Haye would have murdered Bellew in his prime, too quick and far too heavy handed.
For the first one when I didn't realise how far Haye was gone, and when I saw Helles on the scales I thought it would be an easy night for the Londoner.
Giving you a fake email doesn't sit well, he could have just said no.
I've never met Haye or Booth but I never took to either, not that they will lose any sleep over it!
Exciting, top quality fighter though.

I think that Usyk Fury has the potential to be worse than all of them, there'll be more feinting that a victorian melodrama.

Yeah, it was a pointless dick move really.

I had a few fighters react like that over the years, not many.

I remember Carl Froch got proper moody with me when I interviewed him in the dressing Room, and I asked if he thought he was going to be able to win at the highest level relying on his chin rather than trying to block and evade shots.

He turned and went 'Where'd you find this guy?' which took me aback - and then said 'That's how I've fought since I was an amateur - I won a bronze at the world championships and I've done alright so far'

I wish now I'd said 'Yeah, 3rd's not bad, you might have gotten a gold with a better defence.'

To be fair, I love Froch, probably my favourite fighter of my own era, as I followed pretty much his whole career and he really did turn in some top performances. Never in a dull fight.

SO whats the verdict , Do we like him or not , was he good or a great , Personally i like him , i think he comes across has very articulate , with a good head on his shoulders , reasonably confident but not over the top , he was'nt a great but he was better than good , so some where inbetween , , he also gets extra kudo's from me , because just like me he picks winners and usually gets them wrong , so that sort of makes us blood brothers , .

HE took on Bellow when he was'nt in condition for it , so for that i deduct points He sold his legacy to Bellow , boosted Bellow up and dragged himself down , I just hope he needed the money because if he did'nt he rented himself out like a cheap whore , If he needed the money i can understand .

But i would like to see him in one more fight ,, next time he carries on , I'd like to see David , take John Fury up on his offer ,

I remember him talking about this a few years back, he said it would be released at some point, don’t you think it’ll happen?

Yeah, I remember the last time I saw that many mars bars was at a tuck shop.

As Danny Dyer would no doubt have said 'Pwopper Nawwty Crowwd.'
I was at the Mormeck fight too. One of my favourite overseas trips to watch a Brit as it still felt to me that Haye was under the radar with most of his fights with Maloney being in leisure centres.

I randomly met Haye in a bar in Birmingham just before his comeback easy wins pre Bellew. He came across a bit of a dick to be honest until me and my mate told him we’d seen him live against Mormeck, Klitschhko, Chisora etc. He then became more relaxed and friendly. He may have just been annoyed as someone 5 minutes before walked past him and said ‘You’re Lennox Lewis aren’t you?’

He must have been fcking fuming....they must also have been fcking stupid to think he was Lennox.
I bet deep down he was fuming but when Haye’s biggest fights are watched by a couple of million people that’s an awful lot of people that haven’t seen him fight but may slightly recognise him. I’d imagine that kind of thing happens fairly often.

Haye took it fairly well. Just said he wasn’t Lewis but he gets it quite often. The guy then carried on walking past.

Haye was interesting to follow. He was very talented, but indeed, he remained an underachiever because of his fragile body. I was extremely glad, when he exposed the sh!thouse Valuev once and for all.

I don’t think Haye’s record compares with Froch in the sense of facing fighters at their peak. Even Mormeck was passed his peak, and anymore who’s watched quite a bit of the Frenchman on Eurosport building up would have seen only a hard working body beautiful who lacked a big punch. The heavyweight matches for Haye did look good but timing did help. Barrett and Ruiz were washed up. Valuev for the big win never fought again and had been in decline for a while behind the scenes with chronic joint issues. Haye a very good fighter but the match making was inspired. Akinwande would have stopped him easily at his peak.

you want to get into soft wins, henry had utterly loads of them. he was like 40 fights in and still facing the likes of kenny craven and pete mcneilly, russell chasteen, etc. did he ever beat a guy who was ranked top 10 at the time? his effort when he stepped up to elite world level was even worse than haye's toe fight too

loads of guys no better than haye, in some cases far far worse, went the distance with akinwande and/or gave him a fight

If you can ignore the two fights with Bellew, he has a decent career, especially at Cruiser.
But his legacy has been badly affected by injuries and his cash out fights. We did not need to have the closing memories of the last two fights from this man being that shot.

Lets not forget that he somehow lasted until the 5th round against a shot Carl Thompson.

I'm glad Benn isn't remembered for his last two fights

Yep - both cash out fights.

The difference was/is Steve Collins was a quiet and respected guy who lots would have favoured to beat Benn at any stage of his career.

Tony Bellew was decent enough at his level, but his 2nd or possibly 3rd tier level had already been found a few years earlier. His mouth and relationship with Eddie had got him his titles.

I think I might have said this in the previous Haye thread already, but I respect the fact that he conceded advantages to get fights done. He was the away fighter for Mormeck, Enzo and Wlad, and he had to sign with the Sauerlands to get Valuev.

I also think he was a bit unlucky in the sense that he's basically the perfect fighter for the Eddie Hearn Sky Sports era of youtube interviews and British showdowns on box office for big purses, but he hit his prime just a bit too early for it (hence the ridiculous comeback against Bellew I guess!). In fact wasn't Audley Haye basically the prototype for that business model, the first guy Hearn promoted?

Is it generally accepted that Haye's body had fallen apart in the 3 and a half years between the Chisora and De Mori fights? In the latter he is dragging his right foot along the canvas like Lurch from the Addams family.

Yep

Haye tried to beat Wald on the outside. That works if you're 6ft9 Tyson Fury but not if you're smaller. Wlad crumbled going backwards vs smaller guys (Sanders, Brewster)

Haye was an exceptional talent and could've been an ATG Brit but I have the feeling he was (mostly) in it for the money. If he was in it for purely boxing reasons, he would've stayed at CW and become undisputed

He didn't even fight that much really. 28 fights before his "comeback" (which was obviously for cash)

I'm not knocking that, it's as good a reason as any to do anything, just how I see it

Don't know if I have missed it but what does this mean? - that he had an accumulation of injuries over the years and couldn't train as he otherwise would have?

What was this down to? - overtraining, the wrong kind of training or just wear and tear after training hard non stop since being a kid?

No idea, maybe a combination of being injury prone, years of training and his body just not being able to do what it once could. I'm convinced when the Bellew fight was announced and Haye jetted off to Miami to stay on a boat that was to get him away from reporters and onlookers. Also at the time I remember Bellew saying Haye wasn't fit, I think the Bellew camp knew Haye was broken and thats why he was so confident of winning.

Totally agree. I remember during fight week for the first Haye - Bellew being interviewed and him asking the question why has Haye gone to Germany for an injection into his ankle. It seemed to me that everyone involved in that promotion knew that Haye's leg was injured.

I was stunned when Haye was matched with Bellew … not because of any leg injuries but he also had major problems with his back.

Nonetheless regardless of a catalogue of injuries I was totally convinced David would knock out Bellew with ease.

A tale when David was cut in sparring by Hergovic… we were only 7 days away from the supposed Tyson Fury fight. Everyone including David were devastated the fight was clearly not going to happen. To lighten the mood someone suggested we all went to Stringfellows.

When we got there “Strings” was packed, despite David clearly having a fcuked eye there were people wanting a photo with him and wishing himm luck for the fight.

No one was allowed to say anything about the fight being off until Sky interviewed him in the morning.

I knocked on Davids room door to walk him to the gym where the Sky cameras were waiting… that 2 minute walk was done in silence. We were absolutely gutted.
