Thing is, it isn't Oscar that is benifiting financially from fighting the tough fights that he does, it's the fighters that face De La Hoya that benefit because Hopkins would not have received half of what he got for fighting the smaller De La Hoya if he would have fought a fighter that would have had a better chance! He didn't fight Strum for the money, he fought Strum to see how he could handle a middleweight, which wasn't too good. De La Hoya doesn't have to fight for any kind of money, easy, or hard, but he has the heart of a lion and enjoys a rumble, which is the only reason that he continues to fight!

Winky Wright?.

Why not fight Ouma ? - Margarito ? - he just wants the easiest fights with the most money.

Chicken Dinner Vs Hopalong was a money making venture and that's it!

he knew he would win vs. Sturm if Felix wouldn´t KO him. Regarding his KO rate it was not expected. so the win vs Felix was easy money. Regarding Hopkins he knew that he has no chance and so he boxed and took the money, double as much as the undisputed 4 belt holder........... one thing is for sure: he is a good business man.
BUBI SCHOLZ!! you hatred of de la hoya would be hilarious if it wasnt so pathetic!!

you are named after one of the most cowardly, overprotected fighters in boxing history...gustav "booby" scholz...i say booby because that's the appropriate american slang for a woman's breast!

SCHOLZ WAS A COWARDLY GERMAN CREAMPUFF WHO WAS AFRAID TO FIGHT OUTSIDE OF GERMANY & FOUGHT MAINLY EURO-SCRUBS EVEN THERE  96 FIGHTS AND ALL HE HAD TO SHOW FOR IT WAS A FEW EURO & GERMAN BELTS!!

SO FOR YOU TO CRITICIZE DE LA HOYA IS AS RIDICULOUS AS IT WOULD BE FOR MICHAEL JACKSON TO CALL EVANDER HOLYFIELD A COWARD!!

KEEP IT UP, BOOBY...YOU ARE THE LAUGHINGSTOCK OF THE BOXREC.COM FORUMS!!

you don´t know anything about him. he suffered on tubercolosis and made a come back and finally was euro champ. show me one boxer who did such an enormuos effort who struggled with death. he had a heart like a lion and took all fights he got. no matter what money is in the game. he didn´t get a world title chance in his prime because he was feared overseas like Max Schmeling.

There are LOTS of boxers who have done that. Archie Moore suffered a massive internal haemmorhage and was in hospital for several months hovering close to death, weighing only about 120 lbs when he finally got out. Then it happened again and he was rehospitalised. He fought with a license plate hidden down his shorts for his first three fights back, to protect the vertical scar running down his abdomen.

Willie Pep was is a plane crash which really fucked him over, yet came back. Eamonn Magee is about to come back from having his left leg so badly shattered that they told him he may never walk properly again, let alone fight.

It's the nature of the sport that the people who take part are remarkable individuals, as indeed are most successful sportsmen. It takes superhuman levels of perseverence to succeed at anything approaching top level, and even more so in boxing, where acceptance of pain is a daily occurence.

Whilst coming back from TB is remarkable it's hardly the only example of a boxer coming back from near death to fight.

There have been several fighters that have came back from TB to compete successfully! Rodolfo "Gato" Gonzalez had to retire due to a serious liver problem that was life threatening, but came back to win a world title! Like James stated, Archie Moore also had to retire to a life threatening illness! A lot of fighters have overcame adversity due to health problems and came back to compete successfull!

I don't disagree with that, but his looks and appeal have had most to do with the amount of money he has made. If he faught like he did, but looked like Carl Thompson I doubt very much he'd be the richest ever non-heavyweight would he....

A great career though all told, you can't deny that.

oscar has been a credit to boxing, and seems like a great guy.

I'm pleased he gave this big chance to two of our fighters. Froch can still learn and now he has the ideal environment.

Interesting article.

It will be interesting to see how Froch and Witter develop in the US and how much they are appreciated.

I sensed in the N'Dou fight that Witter's showboating was not appreciated by the crowd and Froch is not exactly reserved.

Then again they are both exciting fighters so I reckon they'll be popular.

Pretty impressive stuff from Hennessy to form this link!

actually i do know something about booby scholz i remember seeing him at the bottom of the ring magazine top 10 a few times when i was young. he may have struggled to overcome illness, but vinnie pazienza struggled to overcome a broken neck, coming back to fight for world titles after the doctors said he may never walk again!!

THAT DOESNT MEAN VINNIE WILL EVER BE IN THE INTERNATIONAL HALL OF FAME, CAUSE HE WONT!! NEITHER WILL BOOBY, MICHALCZEWSKI OR SVEN OTTKE...UNLESS YOU WANT TO COUNT THE EUROPEAN HALL OF FAME (IF THERE IS SUCH A THING!!) COMING BACK FROM OUT-OF-RING ADVERSITY DOES NOT QUALIFY YOU FOR HOF, IT'S WHAT YOU DO IN THE RING & COMPARED TO OSCAR, BOOBY DIDNT DO SQUAT IN THE RING!! HE WON WORLD TITLES IN 5 WEIGHT CLASSES, FOUGHT MANY OF THE WORLDS BEST, INCLUDING A CHALLENGE OF MUCH BIGGER BERNARD HOPKINS, WHO IS BETTER THAN WINKY OR OUMA!! BOOBY COULDNT EVEN BEAT HAROLD JOHNSON IN THE FRIENDLY CONFINES OF GERMANY

so to even mention a joke like booby scholz in the same breath with oscar (or even max schmeling) only proves you are a shameless homer for synthetic german "heroes"!!
