Re: Matt Christie leaves Boxing News
just seen Butcher was at Boxing Social 2020-22 then ID Boxing since then, so a very Tebbutt-esque appointment.
Re: Matt Christie leaves Boxing News
Possibly me reading too much into it, but he makes specific reference to the past 12 months being really tough (the period since acquisition). Someone also gave me a heads-up regarding the allegations floating around about the Ben Shalom doc being pulled (there's a post on the OffTheHook forum about it), so I'm not sure it's quite mystery solved territory.veriton wrote: ↑27 Apr 2024, 03:54 Just listened to the pod, mystery solved.
Alex Steedman did the journalist job straight away and asked him why.
As above, Christie is sick of all the whining from promoters and associated nonsense and has simply had enough. Why he didn't just say that in the mag is a mystery.
Mark Butcher is the new editor. I remember him as part of the BM team so BN is thankfully in really good hands.
Being charitable, maybe that Boots press release this week was last gasp filler as Christie headed for the door and they were up against it.
Feel much happier knowing a proper boxing journo is the new editor.
On the flipside, Mark Butcher seems the proverbial 'safe pair of hands' so hopefully all is not lost. Big shoes to fill though...

Amen. I do chuckle when people like Muttley think people on a forum should not discuss something. It is a forum for debate. Re: Matt Christie leaves Boxing News
Christie's love letter exit note was weird too and the lack of honesty left a sour taste. Anyway, much as I rated him he bailed and he's history now. Let's see what Mark Butcher brings. I'm really looking forward to next week's issue.
Interesting Steedman was asking for sponsors for the now independent pod with Christie. Guessing he was getting a few quid for it before. I hope it does carry on but the value for me was that it featured the editor of BN. Its such a crowded landscape and that made it standout.
Maybe Hanson Lee and Delco Fire Services will pop up again!

Has any one ever considered it might be personal? When you leave a place of employment you too do not have to give a reason or let anyone else know where you are moving on to. That's your private business, unless you want to share it. Just because this is a forum it does not entitle someone to have their private life discussed.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑27 Apr 2024, 16:05I don’t think it is just his business. Re: Matt Christie leaves Boxing News
If it was private and personal then fair enough, just hand in your notice and go.
But we had four pages of public goodbyes. It wouldn't have killed someone to put a couple of paragraphs to explain why it was happening.
I think many of us subscribers have a lifelong and personal relationship with BN so deserved more than a prolonged reacharound followed by Christie wheelspinning out of the car park.
Over it now though lol

Never posted there myself, but have dropped in occasionally as there can be some good threads on there (the one about the British guy training fighters in LA and Vegas has some excellent insights).maverick23 wrote: ↑28 Apr 2024, 15:59What was the Shalom stuff about? Can't remember the post verbatim, but basically says that BN filmed Shalom for a mini documentary recently but then when the trailer got negative reactions as Shalom didn't come across well Boxxer allegedly pressured them into pulling it. If it's remotely true it's not hard to see how this could have caused huge friction internally at BN.

same here I'd love to hear about it re Shalom

Just because someone is a loyal reader still does not entitle them to know exactly why an editor leaves a publication. By all means discuss the topic. As you say it is a forum for debate, but why Matt left is his business.SeanBrennan wrote: ↑27 Apr 2024, 16:34Amen. You’re obsessed. Why are you so keen for Matt to be protected. And protected from what? Sounds like maybe Christie was caught in a compromising position with yourself, a bag of Charlie and a goat and you want it kept quiet. Boxing news is public property and its loyal readers have every right to know why its editor is leaving.Muttley wrote: ↑29 Apr 2024, 02:26Just because someone is a loyal reader still does not entitle them to know exactly why an editor leaves a publication. He was, yes. Mark knows his stuff,no doubt. It's a tough job because of the political pressures involved. Mark knows what is expected of him to do the job properly so I'm surprised he has taken on such a thankless, time consuming and stressful position. I wish him wellJamesPhilips wrote: ↑27 Apr 2024, 03:56Wow.veriton wrote: ↑27 Apr 2024, 03:54 Just listened to the pod, mystery solved.

Mark Butcher? That’s a surprise. He was laid off by BN years ago. He writes well

You need to get out more. Boxing News, public property? Just because someone reads a sports magazine, does not give them the right to chapter and verse on the editor's decision to resign.JamesPhilips wrote: ↑29 Apr 2024, 05:08You’re obsessed. Re: Matt Christie leaves Boxing News
Loving the new look, new feel Boxing News under the new editor.
Stunning cover design, also feels thicker paper on the cover so a better feel. It's a bold start that really does feel different.
Butcher's first Editor's Letter details his history with BN and working with the legendary Harry Mullan. I love the fact he's stamped his boxing credentials straight away.
I also like the full pages for the history and ex boxers features. They had felt a bit squeezed before.
Christie did an excellent job but Butcher seems the right man to take BN onwards.

Re: Matt Christie leaves Boxing News
Am I the only 'old fashioned' guy on here, who doesn't like the swearing which has started to appear over the last 12 months in the Boxing News?
I know the people being quoted are cursing like an Irish navvy, and I can swear a bit myself, but do we really need to follow the modern trend and see it in print?
I don't like it, but like everything else that's happening I've just got accept it, but within this thread we've mentioned several previous editors and none would have allowed it, and I can tell you some could curse like the best of us
