I love the confidence.
Do you think Huni will be a future champion? If you think he's going to completely dominate a KO artist in the top ten i suppose you do.
I've had an eye on him for a couple of years & he looks decent. I think this is a better fight than the fat lump Fabio was fighting before.
I don't like his lack of power. I also don't like that he doesn't move much. But the difference in handspeed here will really be night and day. He will work the body and he is more than willing to have a dust up. It's just a very bad style matchup for Fabio but a lot would be. He's just not that good. He's only got a punchers chance here. It's extremely likely that he gets steamrolled. I am not sure Huni will be champ though. He's got skills but hasn't displayed good movement or good power. He's looked like he could be chinny. He's a live dog against anyone though. I'm very surprised they made this fight.

FABIO WARDLEY'S MANAGER DILLIAN WHYTE SET FOR RING RETURN ON PORTMAN ROAD UNDERCARD

Dillian Whyte will return to the ring on the undercard of Fabio Wardley’s homecoming show at Portman Road on June 7.

Wardley is set to fight Justis Huni at the home of Ipswich Town FC after his initial opponent Jarrell Miller pulled out with a shoulder injury.

And now it has been confirmed that Wardley’s manager Whyte will now provide a star turn further down the card.

The 37-year-old ‘Bodysnatcher’ has not boxed since he stopped Ebenezer Tetteh in the seventh round of their entertaining December clash at the Europa Point Sports Complex in Gibraltar.

Whyte had been scheduled to face Joe Joyce in Manchester on April 5 but a freak gym accident, when a rolling dumbbell cut his finger down to the bone, forced him to withdraw.

Now the (31-3, 21 KOs) heavyweight will return to the ring in a 10-round contest as he builds towards a big summer fight with the likes of Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker in his sights. The Ring understands the New Zealander Hemi Ahio (24-1, 18 KOs) looks like the most likely opponent.

At the launch press conference on the pitch at Portman Road on Wednesday, Whyte said: “Obviously I was getting ready for April 5 but a gym accident forced me to pull out. I still wanted to fight but my team pulled me out of the fight.

“I was thinking about it last night when I got offered the fight, for a lot of my big nights, Fabio was supporting me but it’s funny how life works, now I’m on the undercard.

“I’m looking for as big fight in the summer which we are talking about. I could sit around and wait for the big fight but I’m not at that stage of my career, I want to be active. So let’s go, let’s get it on.”

Whyte has already fought both Joshua and Parker, losing to the former via stoppage back in 2015 before beating the latter on points in their 2018 12-rounder at the o2.

Whyte added: “I just want to fight the best guys I can fight.

“Obviously the AJ fight is always there, we have needle and it’s a lifelong thing. I enjoy fighting the guy to be honest and I’m sure he enjoys fighting me.

“There’s also Joseph Parker, Filip Hrgovic, even Deontay Wilder is coming back. I just want to fight the best guys. I’d take a Parker rematch or an AJ trilogy fight."

Below are a selection of key quotes from the media event, which also featured promoter Frank Waren and Eddie Hearn from Matchroom, representing Huni.

Frank Warrrn

“Thank you again to Ipswich for making this happen. We’ve still got a great fight, we’ve got a great fighter in Fabio, who will defend his Interim title as the No.1 with the WBA. This is going to be something a little bit special.

“I really feel that Fabio has shown what he is all about and, in every fight he’s had, everybody has been on the floor, they have all tasted the floor. He certainly doesn’t want to lose that run he’s got and we feel has the beating of Justis, who is really a very good fighter, a quality fighter.

“I think we are going to see a real, real battle between the two of them. This is going to be boxing at its best. A stellar amateur background from Justis, who is undefeated as a pro. There is the spice of Queensberry v Matchroom and, I promise you, you are not going to be disappointed.

“The fans will get behind their man and see him get through this, which I believe will be a tough fight, but he will go on and turn this Interim title into a full world title. It will happen, I think it is destiny for Fabio to be challenging for a world title and, with the power that he’s got, he has every opportunity and all the wherewithal to win one.”

Eddie Hearn

“Firstly, a thank you to everybody for allowing us the opportunity for this fight. Frank and Queensberry, plus George, I couldn’t believe it when we got the call. It is going to be just over six years since Anthony Joshua lost to Andy Ruiz and the similarities are so similar.

“We were fighting Jarrell Miller and about four weeks before he pulled out of the fight. We were so confident but, like Frank, we wanted to deliver a great fight for the fans and the broadcaster. We probably chose the wrong style, we probably chose the wrong fight and this is a carbon copy of that. I really believe that.

“Don’t get me wrong, I am happy and sad. I am happy that Justis is going to get his chance to announce himself on the world stage, but just a little bit sad for Fabio because I thought he would beat Jarrell Miller and I was quite looking forward to seeing it. And now we’ve got to go and ruin everything, the dream, the fairytale, and it is a tough one. Because he is a lovely, lovely fella and now we get on with Frank.

“The pressure is massive on Fabio Wardley, massive. One thing I will say, we had a really good face-off in there, it is two world class fighters and I think this is the first time they have fought at world level, both of them. It will be a real fight on June 7.”

Fabio Wardley

“A change of opponent, but the same venue, same occasion and for me it will be the same outcome. Look, it is the homecoming I have been asking and asking for, for a very long time. We had it going the first time around with Miller, who unfortunately had to pull out, but we, Frank and the team over there, credit to them, pulled the cat out of the bag and got another great contender. No.1 with the WBO, me No.1 with the WBA, so it is basically No.1 vs No.1, just without the belts. The winner will have the chance to get his hands on those belts. So that is what June 7 will be about and it will be the full focus.

“I understand he is taking this fight on short notice but I probably urge him to do a bit more homework. If you think all I’ve got is power, it is going to be a rough night for you. Even if that is the case, you only have to look at the likes of Deontay Wilder, who did pretty well having just power.

“I can get there if I need to, but me, the team, Frank and even Eddie over there knows as well, there is more in my bag than just power. I’ve proved it and you only have to look at my fights and my record and see. Don’t get me wrong, my fights end by me dropping them and getting them out of there, which is proven, but to set those things up and putting the pie together comes from boxing ability, IQ and studying my opponents.

“That is something that I do very well. Yeah, look, the power is the glitz and glam, the highlight reel that you see, but nobody else sees the hours of work and addressing footage and looking through the nitty details of fighters. It is something I have really doubled down on, my education in boxing. Ultimately on June 7 it will be Fabio Wardley’s hand raised and his opponent out on the floor.”

Justis Huni

“This is my coming out party, to show the world who I am. What better way to do it? On a massive stage like this in Fabio’s home town. I am coming here to bring an upset and I just can’t wait to get in there now and put on a show for all of the fight fans and everyone who will be tuning in.

“I think the only thing he has over me is the power, but every other box I tick. Footwork, speed, putting my punches together in bunches. I believe I tick all the other boxes and I cannot wait to get it on.

“It is going to be a sweeter victory with them thinking they are going to get over me that easy. It is going to be a lot tougher night in that office come June 7.”

WARDLEY-HUNI: SAM GILLEY VS. ISHMAEL DAVIS SLATED FOR JUNE 7 AFTER LOUIS GREENE WITHDRAWAL

Sam Gilley's seven-month absence will end against Ishmael Davis on the Fabio Wardley vs. Justis Huni undercard June 7, not the long-anticipated Louis Greene rematch originally scheduled last winter.

Commonwealth and former English junior-middleweight champion Gilley (18-1, 9 KOs) eased beyond short-notice opponent Jack McGann on his Queensberry debut in October, hopeful there would be a solution to the situation that saw him waiting patiently for a big opportunity at 154-pounds.

In Thursday's latest British championship circular update, Davis (13-2, 6 KOs) is named as Gilley's next opponent after stewards approved a request for a voluntary defence on the same date.

The reason behind Greene's withdrawal wasn't disclosed and an official announcement that Gilley-Greene 2 is again off hasn't yet been publicised by the promotion.

Both boxers were set to feature as part of Wednesday's Portman Road press conference in Ipswich, though neither were there and instead, the top table featured Wardley's manager Dillian Whyte announcing his return next month.

Earlier this month, Gilley admitted he'd rejected offers to fight for European honours and was eager to end this chapter of his career.

He told Boxing Now: "I just can't wait to get it over and done with, feels like I've been talking about it forever now - he probably feels the same - was 29 when I first fought him, I'll be 31 after this and it's taken a huge chunk out of my career.

"It's partly my fault, could've gone over the British and onto other things but I've wanted this title since I was a kid, can't wait to get it wrapped around my waist... frustrating but part of the game."

Four months after their first meeting, Junaid Bostan vs. Bilal Fawaz 2 is in the works to decide the new titleholder of Gilley's old belt, vacated to face Greene in their entertaining 12-round battle.

Gilley, gymmates with junior-welterweight Liam Dillon (15-1-2, 3 KOs), joked that he's the odd one out - Dillon clinched Southern Area, English and British junior-lightweight titles before now challenging unbeaten Irish contender Pierce O'Leary (16-0, 9 KOs) on the Wardley-Huni undercard for vacant EBU European honours at 140-pounds.

Davis, whose two defeats came on short-notice against Josh Kelly (MD12) and Serhii Bohachuk (RTD6) on a pair of Riyadh Season cards in 2024, was scheduled to box Ryan Kelly on Matchroom's Sheffield card April 19 before withdrawing himself through injury and being replaced by Caoimhin Agyarko.

The Leeds-based contender recovered quickly from his undisclosed issue, spending time training out in Miami, Florida to complete rounds with former IBF world super-middleweight title challenger Vladimir Shishkin (16-1, 10 KOs) last month.

While Gilley has kept it domestic with sparring recently, from Denzel Bentley and Sam King to Alfie Gaskin and former Southern Area champion Paul Gordon, the 30-year-old is enjoying life stateside.

After his Miami trip, he has since ventured to Las Vegas, Nevada for rounds with the WBO's No. 6-ranked middleweight contender Troy Isley (14-0, 5 KOs) and Norfolk welterweight prospect Keon Davis (3-0, 2 KOs) this week.

Has he sparred both? I wouldn't have thought Huni but you never know.

SUBSTITUTE JUSTIS HUNI READY TO SPOIL THE IPSWICH PARTY WITH FABIO WARDLEY VICTORY

Justis Huni sits in one of the racing-style bucket seats in the Ipswich Town dug-out and surveys Portman Road as if he was about to make a tactical change in a home fixture against Leicester City.

“It’s nice, this place,” he tells The Ring while scanning the pitch in the spring sunshine. “I feel like it’s important that I got here and got a feel for it before fight night.”

A few weeks ago, the 26-year-old from Queensland, Australia, had never even heard of Ipswich, the largest town in the county of Suffolk, much less its football team but he did know the name Fabio Wardley.

He knew, therefore, what beating the undefeated puncher from this neck of the woods on June 7 could do for his career and it felt like a risk worth taking. No matter that he did so on only a few weeks' notice following the withdrawal of the injured Jarrell Miller, or that he will have to attempt to beat Wardley here at Portman Road, which is very much the 30-year-old’s own backyard.

“I just feel like it’s meant to be right now,” Huni adds. “I’m No.1 in the WBO, he’s No.1 in the WBA so I think our paths were going to cross at some point anyway so this feels like the perfect time.

“This is his homecoming fight but this is also my coming out party. It’s massive for both of us and we are both looking to take the win home but I know deep down I’m about to cause a huge upset here in his hometown.

“As soon as we got the call I just said ‘let’s go’. I put my head down and got to work, really dug deep for five weeks and do my job.

“It was an easy decision for me. If I didn’t take this fight I would never know when another opportunity like this would come around. I could have been sitting around fighting in Australia for who knows how long before another chance.”

It has taken the 26-year-old just 12 professional fights to reach that No.1 spot with the WBO, while the WBA currently also have him within their top 10. It was clear that he was going to be matched hard and moved early from the off, with the 13-1-1 Australian heavyweight champion Faiga Opelu brought in for his debut, which was scheduled for 10. Huni, just 21, won inside seven.

He has barely put a foot wrong since, with nine further 10 rounders during his run to 12-0, 7 KOs. And, although he is four years’ Wardley’s junior and has had seven fewer fights on paper, he has actually had 16 more professional rounds than his opponent.

In fact, when it comes to boxing experience, Huni and Wardley are night and day. Much was made of Wardley’s lack of pedigree during his two-fight series with Frazer Clarke, a long-time amateur boxer who spent years in the GB Boxing set up and eventually competed at the Olympics. But in Huni, former white collar man Wardley is up against someone who can barely remember a life before boxing.

“When I was still crawling I was in the boxing gym watching my dad and older brother,” he recalls. “My dad used to train him so it was natural that I followed as soon as I could walk really.

“I actually had my first fight when I was seven but in Australia you’re not allowed to box until you’re 10 so I was doing it under the radar and faking my age.

“So I had my first official fight on my 10th birthday. I’ll never forget it, it was like my little birthday present. Thankfully I won so it didn’t ruin my day.”

In contrast, Wardley was a latecomer to boxing and famously never spent any time as an amateur, instead cutting his teeth during a short stint on the white collar circuit before turning professional in 2017. In boxing terms, their backgrounds could not be more different.

“Look,” Huni says. “Credit where credit is due, he’s done all the hard fights as a professional and overcome all those challenges. I could sit here and go back and forth about how I’ve had all this amateur experience and he hasn’t, but he’s proved himself in the pros.

“The debate could go on forever but luckily there is one way of settling it and that’s in the ring on June 7.”

A few weeks before Huni’s arrival at Portman Road for the launch press conference, Miller had sat in the exact same seat, ranting and raving about what he was going to do to Wardley. The pair were even separated by security as Miller slapped his opponent round the face.

Late-substitute Huni is far quieter but will still assume his role as the villain of the piece on the night at the home of Ipswich Town FC. He smiles at the suggestion.

“I’m not really into soccer - or football - at all so I don’t know anything about them,” he says. “A few of my mates are and they know Ipswich and said they had just been relegated.

“That means me turning up will be a double disappointment for them. It’s going to be massive, man. I’m looking forward to it.

“I’m just here to embrace it all, take it all in. I won’t let a crowd change the way I come out here and do my job. I’ve been in this sport for too long to let other people get to me or let a crowd booing me take over how I perform.

“I’m going to stay focused, tunnel vision, stick to the job in hand and bring home the win.”

There’s a lot of hype behind Wardley but I can’t imagine him breaking the top of the heavyweight division with no amateur career. He’s done bloody well to get as far as he has. I’ve a feeling Huni may well ruin the party here. By the looks of it he had a very good amateur career and boxed the very best amateurs included Jalolov. While he didn’t rip trees up, beating Kevin Lerena shows he has a pedigree of sorts and he is also as big as Wardley so won’t be giving up height or weight.

Wilder has/had one trick, and not a lot else really.
Fabio has knocked guys out with a lot of right hooks sure, but not limited to that, Coffie was mostly body shots and Adeleye was a left. Probably more.
Also has ring IQ, something Wilder lacks.

This is a good fight , For me it will really show where both these guys are at .

Huni i've followed since he was in the ameteurs , when he was a kid i really used to think future world champ , nothing really changed my opinion on that UNTIL he turned pro , and although he has done everything asked of him , i could'nt help but think he's not got the physical strenght , or the punch for the top pro's , and regardless off how good you are , and don't get me wrong Huni is good he can certainly box a bit , but in the pro's you need a good dig or a cast iron chin , preferably both , and i'm not sure Huni has any of these , certainly hope i'm wrong though , , because just like Opetai , when he was a kid i picked him to go all the way .

Fabio , well he looks the goods but once again i look and then go back to Warren , no one can bring along a boxer like allegedly , if he decides he likes someone , he gets them there , wether or not they can make the last steps , you never know, , he's had a lot who could, but a lot who could'nt , but regardless , his matchmaking and money have done the job for them . Its an interesting one .

Franks like a dog with two tails at the moment he's a happy man , his heavyweights are doing very well , ,IF Huni gets beat , you watch Frank push for Huni -- Moses , , but if Huni wins will Frank push for Moses -- Fabio ,, big choices ahead for Frank has a promoter , and good fights for us fans . British heavyweight scene is flying

I must’ve missed something with Huni for some of you who know more than me to rate him so highly. The only fight I’ve seen of his was against a journeyman type kid, a cruiserweight I think, who I remember almost stopping Huni but then not quite being able to get the job done while a wobbly Huni struggled to hang on for a points decision? Does that sound right or did I confuse him with another fighter?

I never rated Fabio highly until he walked through Clarke, but Huni seems a bit fragile for a professional heavyweight to me and based on what I’ve seen from both of them I reckon Clarke stops him late. If he’s the kid I think he is?

Probably Lerena. Huni struggled against his hand speed and definitely got wobbled.

Unless Huni’s got some defence he hasn’t shown yet, this feels like two very hittable guys, with Wardley having the edge in power.

I like Huni, comes across well, and I wouldn’t be shocked if he pulled it off. But I think Miller had a better chance.

Yep. I wasn't agreeing that Larena was a journeyman, I just meant that was the fight Cyclops was referencing. But I do think both Wardely and Huni are both quite open defensively. Should be a fun fight.

Kevin Lerena is a decent fighter, no shame in being wobbled by him.
Yep. I wasn't agreeing that Larena was a journeyman, I just meant that was the fight Cyclops was referencing. But I do think both Wardely and Huni are both quite open defensively. Should be a fun fight.
Agree. I haven't decided on my exact prediction yet. Looking forward to it.

Hence .why I.m saying . I HOPE I.M WRONG although he.s been winning in the pro.s he.s not looked the goods he looked in the ameteurs . The bigger gloves amateur style seemed to suit him more . Similar though I.m curious to see if Fabio is a real prospect or a manufactured one it's actually why I like this fight it will answer questions

I’m a dopey pudendum aren’t I, writing ‘Clarke’ to stop him late instead of Wardley

Yeah, who knows with Fabio? I had him written off as soft and one of the weaker newer generation UK heavyweights, with his white collar background, but he has consistently proved me wrong and shown himself a genuine hardnut with a mean streak. He’s entertaining and I like that he’s being chucked in there. We’ll have a much better idea where he’s at after this one.
