Sound reasonable? Obviously 100% of the last two items are wholly tax. Five per cent of your electric bill goes to the taxman and 4% of any money you pay to protect yourself with insurance. Of the £23 you spend at the flicks and eating out, 17.5% goes to the government in VAT. While you're enjoying yourself, so is the Treasury; they take £4.03 from you for the evening.
35% of a well-deserved drink goes direct to our masters, and a recent AA campaign followed by the picketing of oil refineries serves to remind us that a staggering 85% of the money spent on petrol is snatched by the taxman. Eighty five per cent! But even that is not the worst. The state loves a smoker, of course, and from the money spent on cigarettes an astonishing 88.9% enters its coffers.
It brings tears to the eyes. Altogether, a full £32.31 of that week's expenses goes straight to the taxman.
Of the £100 earned, £64.31 will have been paid to the government in tax. At the end of the day, all you will have to show for it is £35.69 in goods and services. A higher-rate taxpayer will retain a miserly £21.69.
Oh, and we haven't even taken into consideration the host of taxes on business, employers national insurance contributions, airport taxes, capital gains tax ... and then there's stamp duty, where you hand over thousands just because you decide to move house! Somebody is taking us for a ride.
Well, That's Interesting
A bit inaccurate.

The first 4200 a year is tax free. Then the bit from 4201 to 10,000 is taxed at 10%, over that it is 22%.

National insurance contributions go towards the state pension and the NHS. It also goes towards the benefits system. However, you get fornicate all more benefits if you've paid national insurance for years than if you haven't.

granted on the 10% up to 10k, the statement was aimed at the majority who fall between the 10 - 30k bracket (or 32,400).

National insurance is still a government tax be it going to a state pension, which a fair percentage of us will never see, or the NHS.

Still, could be a lot lot worse.

But moreover, what if you have NEVER been out of work (or ever expect to be), never received any benefits (even £55 a week)....will never get a state pension (I'm 25..they won't exist when I retire)..and have never really been ill or needed to visit the NHS (been to hospital about 3 times in my 25 years, for minor things).

Now..consider how much NI I pay on my £27,500 a year annual salary...and how much I will EVER get back? The answer is potentially zero pence. Now THAT is what is criminal....

It is "insurance" sure..but insurance I have have no option of opting out of paying and will never require in all probability.

You can choose to opt out of the state earnings realted pension scheme or SERPS, and contribute the part of your national insurance to your own pension scheme instead. The only trouble with this is, private pension schemes are a fornicating lottery. I was part of one, and paid in a total of about £3500 including employers contributions, after 3 years, this is now only worth £2300, so in fact I've lost £1200.

My mate works for Invesco and he said that private pensions are not worth investing in, there's lots of better ways, like ISA's etc to invest your money.

The pension WILL exist when you're older. Older voters are the ones who turn out most often, and pensions are going to become a MASSIVE issue over the next 20 years as all of us in our 30's hurtle towards old age.

Well, they may exist in 40+ years when I retire, but they won’t payout anything worthwhile. Quite simply the average life expectancy that continues to increase has helped to screw over the pensions concept. They simply cannot get enough money from the pension funds to cover the projected future outgoings. I expect to work until I die..more or less. Sure..I might get “something”…but it would be a pittance compared to whatever I had paid in.

As you say, ISA’s etc, or better still a second property would be a considerably better option. Imagine living off the rent money coming in each month as compared to some pultry pension sum instead that you contributed to for your whole working life. No contest…

the other thing is its taxed heavily on import sand then the vat tax thru the pump which is already 80 odd percent is tax on tax.

fornicating wrong if you ask me that. paying tax on a product that is mostly expensive cos its taxed so high.

Yep, owning a car is a liability in London, too expensive, and I'd end up having a stroke or road rage incident. I get wound up enough if the tube stops in a tunnell, i'd fornicating lose it and abandon the car if I was stuck in a jam.

And maybe go on a rampage like Michael DOuglas in 'Falling Down'? :TU:

I cycle 90% of the time, or use public transport, i hate driving in london, its full of knobs and sooner or later something nasty is going to happen to me or another driver, so i cut it to a minumum. My bro & sis in law, who between them earn far too much money, have just given up cars, use the tube and have just bought push-bikes.

at which point big hurly bouncer with exocet missile lodged in brain turns up.

My favourite scene is on the golf course, i really really hate golf, i hate watching it, i hate the bastards that go on golfing holidays to countries where water is scarce , diverting it from farmers and all. im sure all councillers play golf, they dont do fornicate all else.

where the hell is my council tax money going? Nearly every dept at the local council is outsourced to subcontracters, the result is that they dont know bugger all and thus they tend to hack all plants and tress down instead of pruning or tending, my local parks have been raped of nearly all its plants and trees. Golf course is nice and green though. Grrrrr

But even though tax is a fornicating sickening part of petrol costs, the companies like shell and BP are still making £1/2 trillion a second or something. Arses. We could never get it to happen, but imagine if every car driver in Britain just didn't drive for one day. That would fornicate them up so much it would be funnier than Riddick Bowe's comeback.

Lets start a Riot like the Poll tax. I hate paying Taxes.

Last time my MoterCycle got nicked i called 999, had to wait 3 hours.

How far do you think you can get on a 1100cc in 3 hours?

The C##T who stole it came out of court for nicking cars & decided to use my bike to go home on after his 7th arrest for stealing!

I pay two sets of council tax, i own a hotel, i pay £420 for that and as i live in a flat in the hotel i also pay £74, i still cant get my domestic rubish picked up as i live in a comercial property.

I have to dump it down the road where they pay just the £74 like me or i have to pay £9.95 a week for a wheel bin.

Anyway i do smile when i cycle pass ppl in rush hour traffic in cycle paths that seem to have been built for he sole purpose of me cycling :TU:

Yep, you're damned right. There's a huge amount of political apathy, and I am as a guilty of it as anyone. My grandfather was a trade unionist and labour MP in Ireland, and I grew up big on politics. Now, I really don't give much of a toss. I think thatcher did a very good job in convincing people that politics don't matter, and that the people have no say in anything.

You have to admire the French in that respect, if something pisses them off, they go fornicating nuts, block the roads up and force the French government to listen. They didn't suck George's bush's balls either and go and invade Iraq.

Yeah, but property is so over priced at the moment.

Another interest rate rise or two and income will not cover borrowings or anywhere near it.

You only have to look at who's buying and who's selling, to see who the mugs are and who the smart guys are.

Remember, the Labour Government haven't had the benefit of selling Nationalised industries or North Sea Gas/Oil to help balance the books!

Labour inherited a tired and depressed nation, with crumbling schools, disenchanted and collapsing NHS, high unemployment despite 26 changes to the method of counting, high interest rates, inflation and a downtrodden econonmy.

Sure, some of the billions Labour have invested in education and health has been wasted but when you're talking on the scale we are, perfection isn't possible.

Remember how you used to fear for your job because the tories WANTED 3-4 million unemployed so that you were scared to resist change.

Which is how they powered the crushing of the union movement.

Closed communities in the North of England....

And remember, THEY introduced VAT. So when we talk or bemoan stealth taxes, remember the TORIES invented them, remember that they sold off national assets that ALREADY belonged to EVERYONE to the FEW.

Remember how they raped and pillaged our heavy industry, only to buy in subsidised imports from Germany or SOuth Africa.

Remember they preferred to import coal from Columbia, where they employ 9 year olds in horrendous conditions to dig it up, or SOuth Africa where aparthied still reigned or from Germany who enjoyed subsidies to product there coal.

Remember how they CLOSED hospitals, how the current MRSA virus started with the privatising of cleaning facilities and cutting ward matrons - the they're now claiming they want to re-introduce!

Remember how the balance of trade defecit was so high we wondered how we'd ever clear it.

Remember how they almost broke STERLING playing the EU game without a referendum.

Remember how they took away school milk, remember how they made you pay for eye-tests, dental appointments....

Remember, the poll tax riots, the miners strike, the closing of shipyards, the dereliction of duty in South Yorkshire, Wales, Scotland and other areas they didn't give a SHIOT about because they voted Labour.

Remember the LUTON riots, the London riots....

So when we bemoan the Labour Goverment, remember please HOW BAD it was.....

We might not like Sven Goran Erikkson but it doesn't mean we want Graham Taylor back.
