Dalton Smith is legit. This is a guy who has come through the right way and put on a barnstormer of a performance to win his title. I think he's the most legit guy in the UK boxing scene at the moment. Just an excellent fighter. Very tough fight here but I struggle to pick against Dalton. I'm not actually sure just how good he is.

I used to think Azim would keep him at range and beat him but Dalton went up another level winning the title and being champ makes you go up another level again.

I agree, he's the real deal, but this is a tough test he has in front of him on Saturday.

This Alberto is probably going to be a nightmare, isn’t he?

I’ve not seen much of him, but the fact that he beat Russell.. and he looks like he’s got a bit of an awkward style. It could be a hard night for Dalton.

I thought Puello lost to Martin but beat Matias. Both fights were close though.

Most of Puello's fights seem to be ugly, mauling affairs.

My biggest worry is Smith only having the Matias fight in the last 18 months.

Visioli happy learning from decision wins, ready for bullish Hughes

Almost effortlessly, Giorgio Visioli boxed, counter-punched and moved through the early stages of his career towards the top of any list featuring Britain's brightest prospects.

Rather than taking the path of least resistance through the levels, the 23-year-old lightweight's team decided it was time he had a true test.

Visioli was forced to fight for every minute of a 10-round win over the aggressive Joe Howarth in December. He had to think his way through 10 rounds against a determined Levi Giles on March 21 too.

The skilled southpaw has emerged from those tests as English champion, armed with a greater appreciation of what championship level fighting is all about.

On Saturday, Visioli (11-0, 6 KOs) fights the experienced Maxi Hughes (29-9-2, 6 KOs) at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena. It will feature as part of the Dalton Smith-Alberto Puello undercard, streamed exclusively on DAZN.

“I always thought, 'I don't want to do English level. I just want to go straight there,'” Visioli told The Ring.

“But I sat down with my manager, the team and they said, 'No, do English level, they're tough guys and teach you a lot. They'll probably stay in there, not going to go straight down after one punch. They'll be there for 10 rounds in your face,' so I've learned a lot and picked up things.

Until running into the aggressive Howarth last year, Visioli had been able to control the tempo and range of his fights. A number of fighters walked directly into his well-designed traps, well-timed counter punches.

But not the week before Christmas. Fending off Howarth's rushes for 10 rounds taught him that any ambitious fighter won't allow him to find his groove, working at his own pace.

“People think that fight was close because he was coming forward. Don't get me wrong, I won unanimously but it was tough," he said.

“I’ve never experienced someone running me down for 10 rounds before. That was the tough part about it, telling myself 'focus, don't switch off,' but the boxing part was the easy bit. Those fights taught me a lot, especially the Howarth one, because when I went into Levi, was so much more relaxed.

Visioli may not have boxed since outpointing Giles in his first English title defense seven months ago, but hasn't been idle.
He and his trainer Mark Tibbs haven't thrown themselves into a full stylistic overhaul but Hughes presents a significant step up in competition. Provided things go to plan, it should mark his arrival as a true championship-level fighter.

Together, they have worked hard to ensure he's as well prepared as possible for the next stage of his career. Visioli has confidence those efforts have turned him into a more well-rounded fighter.

“Definitely because in between those months, I've just been in the gym learning and working on the craft, things I've done wrong in the Giles fight like putting my shots together more, not being hesitant to throw,” he said.

“You'll see a lot of different sides to me because it feels like I've been in camp throughout those six months. I've trained every day, not at really high intensity because I don't want to overwork my body before getting into camp.”

On March 14, Hughes made a short notice step up to junior welterweight and suffered a fifth-round stoppage defeat by Pierce O'Leary. Back down at lightweight, the 36-year-old veteran is a rock solid operator that will give Visioli a crystal clear picture of exactly where he stands.

“Of course. He’s not going to want to be beat by a new kid on the block, a new prospect. It doesn't really look good on him, that's what he's going to think, so he's going to come and give it his all. I know he will, he’s boxed at world level. Three world title eliminators, a British champion so yeah, he's taking it 100% seriously.”

Smith warns he's just getting started before Puello defense

It doesn’t take much for a young fighter to be anointed as a future world champion.

These days, a prospect is showered with compliments for showboating to a one-sided win over a much smaller, overmatched opponent or put on a pedestal for stopping a veteran journeyman who has worked a 40-hour week.

Some allow the weight of expectation to weigh heavy and crack them. Others start to believe the hype and praise, allow their focus to drift and fall by the wayside before having the chance to fulfill their potential.

As he cut his way through the British junior welterweight ranks, Dalton Smith (19-0, 14 KOs) always had the look of a fighter destined for world level.

Smith endured a long wait before getting the world title fight opportunity but the 29-year-old from Sheffield is a down-to-earth character from a close knit family and stayed the course.

He beat the men put in front of him, continued to improve despite a series of injury setbacks and waited for his moment.

On January 10, Smith traveled to Brooklyn, New York and knocked out Subriel Matias in the fifth round of an exciting shootout to become the WBC junior welterweight champion.

“I remember my dad saying something like, 'If Dalton doesn't win a world title, we've underachieved.' I remember being sat there thinking, 'There’s nothing like putting a bit of pressure on me',” Smith told Matchroom Boxing.

“Of course [the expectation was justified]. If I didn't win a world title, I don't think I'd have ever been satisfied with my boxing career. In a way, the pressure's off. For me, I'm just getting started now. There's a lot more I want to prove to the boxing world.”

Smith will return home to defend his title against WBC mandatory challenger Alberto Puello (25-1, 11 KOs) at Sheffield's Utilita Arena on October 24.

The Dominican southpaw is a clever, effective fighter and a tough out for anybody at 140 pounds. The 32-year-old appeared unfortunate to drop a majority decision to Matias during their WBC title fight in July 2025 and The Ring's No. 3-rated contender will travel to England confident he can become a three-time world champion.

Having come this far, The Ring’s No. 1 ranked fighter at 140 pounds is in no mood to take his eye off the ball.

“It's a tough fight. He’s a two-time world champion,” he said.

“He’s got an awkward style but I do well against southpaws. I mean, you look at Puello's record, he’s got Gary Russell Jr. on there, Matias. I don't feel like his record is any better than mine apart from those couple of names on there. He could not do what I did to Matias.”

It’s a tough first defence for sure. Smith is very tough and exciting but it’s not a style for a long reign.

Dalton Smith has truly earned his place at the top\! 🥊💪 He's stayed focused, worked through injuries and pressure, and proved his ability by stopping Matias to become world champion. Puello will be a very tough challenge with his experience and awkward southpaw style, but Smith seems hungry to prove that winning the title was just the beginning. Fighting in front of his home crowd in Sheffield should give him an extra boost. This has all the makings of a fantastic fight\! 🔥 Best of luck to Dalton in his title defence\!

I was never quite sold on him, obviously had lovely skills, wasn't sure he had the punch, which could then perhaps lead to cuts in later rounds and maybe running out of gas.

Was delighted to be proved wrong, and made a mockery of my doubts.

Now knowing my luck, he will dominate for 6 rounds, then get cut, run out of gas and get stopped

Inspired again, Puello promises to beat Smith by any means necessary

Alberto Puello is a man on a mission to become a two-time WBC junior welterweight world champion.

The 32-year-old Dominican Republic-born fighter, No. 3 in The Ring's junior welterweight ratings, faces Dalton Smith on Saturday.

Smith (19-0, 14 KOs) will make the first defense of his crown on home soil at Sheffield's Utilita Arena, headlining a Matchroom Boxing card DAZN will stream exclusively from 7pm BST/2pm ET.

"It's a great opportunity, and it's what I've been waiting for all this time," Puello (25-1, 11 KOs) told The Ring. "I've worked hard to come back with my title."

The pair were scheduled to meet on June 6, before the defending champion was sidelined with an elbow injury.

Puello refused to be idle in the meantime, accepting a hometown stay-busy fight against Miguel Angel Bolano. He scored a fourth-round stoppage of the unheralded Colombian on July 18 in Santo Domingo.

"I feel much better now after the tune-up fight, so won't be coming into this with ring rust."

Before that stoppage, Puello hadn't boxed since his contentious split decision defeat by Subriel Matias 12 months earlier. Having trained in Las Vegas under Ismael Salas' tutelage, the 34-year-old challenger has been in several close battles and isn't a noted puncher but remains unbothered about going into his opponent's hometown.

"I'm not worried; I'm a professional and will fight anywhere. I believe I can win this fight by any means necessary," he said.

Puello continues to take credit with an assist for Smith beating his former foe back in January.

"It seemed Smith took advantage of me leaving Subriel hurt and managed to capitalize, securing the win," he added.

Puello's promoter Belgica Pena acknowledges the opportunity for her fighter but believes he can produce an upset.

"It's a great fight, and I believe Puello has all the qualities needed to come away victorious," she said.

Smith, The Ring's No. 1-rated junior welterweight, enjoyed a productive amateur career before turning pro in May 2019. From there, he steadily worked his way up the traditional route winning a series of regional, domestic and later European titles before heading towards the world scene.

The 29-year-old titlist has wins over former world title challenger Jose Zepeda (KO5), fringe contender Mathieu Germain (UD12) and impressively stopped Matias in Brooklyn, New York on January 10 to claim WBC gold.

Agree that should be a real test for Visioli I’m a bit surprised they made it. Bizarrely Maxi looks younger at the presser than he did 5 years ago!
