Who was the heavyweight that Frank Maloney said he could be the new George Foreman?
He really wasn't
He really wasn't
I think you’re thinking of Paul and Michael Bowen, cousins of Benn. Both were prospects at one time but seemed to fade away from boxing.Old bones Ian wrote: ↑16 Sep 2026, 09:55 Somewhere in the back of my mind is 2 brothers that had a family link with Nigel Benn which got them some column inches when starting out.
He was bloody good fun to watch, regardless of how it all panned out.Kilburn wrote: ↑16 Sep 2026, 12:26 I remember opening a copy of Boxing Monthly in 1996 and reading an article about young Pele Reid. From that point on I was telling everyone to look out for this guy. He’d already conquered kick boxing, was stopping all his opponents, Brendan Ingle was confident he would go on to unify the heavyweight division.
Just watch, I said.
That's them, thanks for the names.Kilburn wrote: ↑16 Sep 2026, 12:15I think you’re thinking of Paul and Michael Bowen, cousins of Benn. I remember being a tad fearful of Grant for the Lewis fight. Yes he looked a tad cumbersome and Golota very nearly upset the apple cart beforehand, but Grant was a huge lump and had shown - dare I say it - tenacity in coming back to knock the fight out of Golota.overhand_right wrote: ↑17 Sep 2026, 05:33 Has Michael Grant been mentioned yet?
HBO went into overdrive selling him, to the point that many journos were picking him to beat Lewis.
After Lewis and Bowe there seemed to be a consensus in the boxing media that the era of the modern super heavyweight had arrived and Michael Grant looked like the future in their eyes. He never looked the part in the ring however, although he did bag a collection of very respectable scalps prior to Lewis exposing him.
I don't think any big men have had the natural skills of Lewis and Bowe. In hindsight they look like freaks.
Wasn't that Martin Rogan?Old bones Ian wrote: ↑16 Sep 2026, 09:57 Who was the heavyweight that Frank Maloney said he could be the new George Foreman?

Yeah Maloney lucked out with Lennox but he seemed to know little about boxing. Belshaw, McBride, Ellis and even David Price were pushed as the next big thing by Frank….. then he suddenly decided to become a woman. It’s a very odd storyFrostieballs wrote: ↑18 Sep 2026, 14:07Don’t forget the ‘Billion Dollar Heavyweight’ - Matthew EllisOld bones Ian wrote: ↑18 Sep 2026, 11:34Scott Belshaw!!!Old bones Ian wrote: ↑16 Sep 2026, 09:57 Who was the heavyweight that Frank Maloney said he could be the new George Foreman?
