totally agree, guys like tubbs, holmes, thomas, spinx, williams, they were never knocked out before they fought tyson. funny how they were hit harder, yet they werent knocked out. but then when they get into the ring with a "lesser" puncher in tyson, they get KTFO

i rate tyson 2nd greatest heavyweight puncher of all time

holmes in the 90s was never floored by guys like holyfield. tysson knocked out a younger holmes.

I love the way none of you guys cut Holmes any slack for the Tyson fight- he was 38 yrs old & coming off a 2 yr layoff with no tune up and fighting the best heavy in the world. The knockout was inevitible.

What was funny is that the 1st knockdown is the hardest, cleanest, most direct hit Tyson could possibly land on a man & Holmes gets straight up. When an over-the-hill Shavers put him down (in the prime of Holmes life) he was out cold... For me, Shavers hit harder. But Tyson could obviously punch.

Interesting to hear Bernado Mercado come up so many times. His punching didnt look all that great against Shavers & Spinks... But that giant Columbian was just about the weirdest scary looking bastard i ever saw.

I don't agree. Just because Tyson had a lot of KO's doesn't mean he necessarily punches harder than someone else with less KO's. Tysons hand speed was a major factor, its normally the punches you don't see that knock you out and you are unlikely to remember being knocked out to comment on the punch that done it.

Those fighters might say that tyson didnt hit them the hardest but a sparring partner of tysons who sparred with mike before he became champ and who also sparred with the heaviest hitters in the division such as cooney, weaver and witherspoon said that tysons power was in a league of its own and so did all the fighters he faced up until he won the title it was only after he won the title that fighters started saying that tyson didnt hit that hard and this was obviously to discredit tyson {quote}.

No, Holmes got up. Tyson had to knock him down two more times before the fight was stopped.

Not the same thing though, is it?

Tyson was a great finisher as well as a great puncher. Shavers was a great puncher but he often failed to finish people off.

I think the point that is being made is that Tyson's one punch shot on Holmes knocked him down but not out. It was Tyson's follow up and great finishing that KO'd the old Larry.

The last shot that hit Holmes was a light left hook on the tip of the chin. It wasnt anywhere near as bad as all the other shots Tyson nailed him with. It look to me like Holmes just quit.

I dont think Brocton Blockbuster has even seen the fight. He seems to think Tyson landed one shot on Holmes and he was out cold which is obviously wrong.

1st knockdown- Tysons hardest most direct clean right downs Holmes who gets up immediately.

2nd knockdown- seconds later, Tyson doesnt land a clean shot, Holmes rolls over because his head is probably still spinning.

3rd knockdown Tyson bangs a stunned Holmes all around the ring with countless shots & combos, Holmes wont go dowqn, goes to the ropes, tries fire a counter which gets trapped in the ropes, Tyson lands two light left hooks nothing like the previous 20 or 30 solid shots, yet Holmes reacts as if struct by a megaton bomb & reclines for the full count.

Apparently Holmes's legs just left him. I've heard that while they were taking out Holmes's mouthpiece he was yelling at his handlers "get me off this fornicating canvas, I wanna fight!" haha.

Tyson was a good finisher but in terms of one-punch knockout power the Holmes fight doesen't suggest to me that Tyson hit harder with a single punch than some of Holmes other foes.

thats ridiculous thing to say i said tyson knocked him out cold. i didnt say he knocked him out cold with one punch. it took him a while and 3 kd but he got the job done with a final wicked right hand with 6 seconds left.

You are absolutely right.

Tyson is the only man to KO Holmes. Larry (as great as he was) did talk some shit.

I reckon Tyson was the hardest puncher in history. And the best finisher too (at HW)

nah he's been hit harder. Tyson caught him with a good shot. There is a different between gettin caught with a good shot and a hard punch. Lionel Butler caught him with a flukey good shot but he wanted Butler's ass ever since and beat his ass up in the gym too

Anybody know anything about the exhibition he boxed with Ali in I think 78 in Russia?

If tyson didnt hit harder than weaver, bowe, cooney etc then how come tysons punches were much louder at the point of impact . Commentators use to say that tyson punches made more noise than any other fighter when they connected . The level of noise = force on impact which = power .

No offence but from a scientific/Thermodynamic point of view this equation just doesn't make any sense.

Its not an equation its common sense , noise made by force = impact on force= level of power , mass being applied etc . For example if i was to hit a bell and made a loud noise and if someone else was to hit a bell and it made a louder noise who do you think would of hit it harder ? .
