I'd actually take Jenson Button at 140-1 instead of Zara as he won his first career GP just a few weeks back, and it made worldwide headlines. Alot better than riding around on a poxy horse!

Button is great value at those odds. F1 drivers have huge anorak fans who vote in polls. I reckon that miserable git Murray although he might alienate the English vote or the fit Royal bird

Darren Clarke is now 11/10ish favourite on betfair for 'the title' after winning 3/3 in the Ryder Cup, undoubtedly coupled with the fact his wife had recently dies, and the touranment has been quite a roalercoaster for him etc.

Well in terms of personality, I'd have him over Zara Philips any day. She's now 3/1 2nd fav, Murray 3rd at 10s.

3 months to go (well less, given the short list has to be drawn etc, but tournaments are running out, and I'd say it would be down to some out-of-the-blue moment of individual genius to get the win.

A bit of business might be to put a dash on Calzaghe @ 65s. If you get that on an exchange, then his televised fight, and a chance he may make the shortlist (of 6 I think?) may put his price in.

According to Frankie, Calzaghe is now 2nd favourite to win, behind Zara Phillips..

Isn't it a bit crazy.... Calzaghe puts in a career best performance earlier in the year - never as high as fifth favourite. Almost puts in a career worst performance later on and he is now 2nd favourite.

If Clarke doesn't want to win it, maybe one of the other British Ryder cup players would be worth a punt.

I don't know if you have seen the BBC ad in recent programmes, but it gives the impression anyway that Darren Clarke has had a change of heart and is now back in the running for the prize.... He is back the favourite with the bookies.

Also, those who have their money on David Walliams. It might not be such a wasted vote, he featured in the ad of the contenders. It been strongly suggested that the BBC will not consider him - obviously they've had a change of heart. I was a bit stunned that they've actually showed clips of his swim, alongside Joe Calzaghe etc.

Well, the shortlist has been announced. Calzaghe and Hatton are on it.

BBC make up rules cause of the David Walliams threat IMO.

What has Hatton done to deserve to be on the list. Junior Witter and Clinton Woods are more worthy.

Calzaghe won the Welsh SPOTY yesterday, had a pretty funny speech,may have helped his chances but I doubt it. 3rd favourite behind Clarke and Zara Phillips. Clarke will win for one reason.

The title should be declared vacant and British sport given a 'must try harder' certificate.

i thought it was in the bag when darren clarke was called in 2nd place.

i started recording on me dvd for an historic moment of a british boxer winning sports personality of the year.

i couldn't believe it when posh nob got picked.

This is probably unfair but I'm glad Calzaghe didn't win it, purely because he has all the talent to have won it several times by now, and for bigger things than beating Jeff Lacy and Bika but has never delivered on all that potential. The Lacy win was damn impressive but should that really be his biggest achievement after nearly a decade supposedly at the top of his division?

Besides if Joe had recieved some kind of public recognition what would Enzo talk about in future interviews. :)

Lets be honest no-one should've won. This has been the most shitty year for British sport in (my) living memory. At this rate we're just going to embarrass ourselves at the 2012 Olympics... I can already see the headlines "Britain fails to win Gold at own games".

yeah i'm worried about our track and field team.

i think we'll win medals in other disciplines.

but our athletics team are pants at the moment.

we need some new stars.
