Yes, and the way Vargas took Quartey's shots showed an excellent chin. But then the nuclear punching Trinidad blasted Vargas to bits, and his punch resistance went after that.
Then guess who was on the phone again?
Just shows how timing is everything, and Oscar has made a career of making the right fight at the right time.
Vargas's demise was due to steroid abuse and hyperthyroidism. His inability to keep weight off more than anything wrecked his career.

My wife thinks MERRYWEATHER will win, she always manages to get peoples names wrong - For example she thought the England manager was called ERIC SVENSON LOL

Yes Oscars comp is truly amazing BUT the way he goes for opponents at the right time is so synical,
130-135 - having 15lbs weight advantage and going for the easier belts and making 130lbers come up to 135 while weighing in at around 150 on fight night
140 - choosing Chavez at the right time when the old man is showing serious weaknesses - can't complain too much about that 1.
Gionzalez - making him come up from 135 (Oscar wasnt keen on the fight at 135)
147 - Whitaker looks past it against while nearly losing to Rivera and Hurtado but arguably beats Oscar
Quartey - after hes coming back from Maleria and not looking too fantastic in his last fight hes offered the fight but Delahoya makes him stay out of the ring for 18months if he wants to fight Oscar.
Trinidad - Oscar whips a prime Trinidad. Some say Oscar waited until it was hard for Tito to make weight. But I don't think this was cynical
Mosley - a top fighter coming up in weight that Oscar saw as a smaller man. Big Mistake
154. Castilljo - weak belt holder
Vargas - destroyed by Trinidad and looks weak getting kd'ed left right and centre
Mosley 2 - Mosley looks done after the Forrest fights
160 - Sturm - weak link - Oscars schooled
Hopkins - Hopkins looks old previous but still a valiant choice
154 - Mayorga - Welterweight Gatti
Mayweather - making another fighter come up in weight. Mayweather never really should of gone above 140lbs.DLH will have 15lbs weight advantage in there.

Now THAT was a superfight....but then Oscar spoils the whole show with his safetly first tactics and turns it into a snoozefest. What a let down that one was - I was too bored to ever score it.
I thought Oscar was brave to take the Mayorga fight, at the time, to be honest. And that was a brilliant performance by the golden one.
If he lands a left hook like that on Sat night.......

Hope BN tomorrow comes up with a good issue, I like those polls they do asking all the boxing peeps their predictions.
The maxboxing lot are mostly going with Floyd, except Allan Scotto, who's really put his neck on the line.

fornicate me, Oscar is in the lead. I know this game is all about opinions, but I get the feeling a lot of people are picking with their heart and not their head. This fight has got Mayweather on points written all over it in my opinion and that's what I'm going for.

yeah same for me.
too slick and too quick for oscar.
everything oscar does is very deliberate and i think u need to fight at a good sustained pace to beat floyd.
floyd on pts.

If anyone can pick holes in Floyd's faults, it's the Golden Boy.
That's all I will say.

I am going with Oscar for this one by a close (possibly controversial) points decision.
PBF will not be able to hurt DLH and will box like he did against Baldomir. DLH brings much more to the ring than Baldomir and PBF's single pot shotting will not be enough IMO.

50/50 in the poll!

I think I just nudged old Merryweather ahead with my vote.
I fancy him to win on points.
What I will find interesting with my cynical hat on is if Mayweather wins the first 6/7 rounds and then lets Oscar back into it.
Would he want to keep it close for the rematch $$$$$ ?

I'm still at odds as to why people think power is the be all and end all.
The fact is, boxers do not like to get hit AT ALL. Whether Mayweather can hurt DLH with one punch or not, he will catch him with so many that DLH won't know what's hit him - that's Floyd's plan at least.

Well if I thought that power was the be all and end all I would have went with an Oscar TKO.
'The fact, is boxers do not like to get hit AT ALL.'
That is a one of the most ridiculous cliches I have seen posted on here. Boxers get hit as an occupational hazard. It is not a question of whether they like getting hit or not more than doing what is necessary to win a fight which invariably involves getting hit (sometimes a hell of a lot) during the course of a career.
It is a credit to the excellence of PBF’s speed of foot and punch that he has won the fights he has at higher weights. However, he is now fighting at LMW against a seasoned multi world titlist who has a lot more about him besides an obvious edge in strength and power.

Did anyone else think DLH sounded a bit fluey on the Tuesday press conference... just seen it on 24/7. As a person who has just been to the bookies, cannot say I was particularly happy about seeing that. Perhaps its just me.

Good observation Stu, but I really do hope he's not got the flu!
Ok guys, I initially thought Mayweather would snake his way to a points decision, but I've changed my mind and thingk the bloke with the midas touch, Oscar De La Hoya, is gonna beat Floyd on points...

The big factor which plays on my mind in this one is Oscar's inactivity, he's had 5 rounds in the last 2 and a half years. I agree when people say he's got some of the tools required to trouble Mayweather, handspeed and a good jab, just the lack of rounds makes it hard for me to be confident in picking Oscar.

Caster - I hope it was a bad obersvation from me..... Did anyone else see it? What did they think? His whole demeaner looked negative.
JC - I'm not worried about Oscar's inactivity as much as I am normally. Unlike Post Hopkins/Pre Mayorga - DLH has not looked soft... he looked like he'd been ticking over ever since Mayorga (long before this fight was signed) - so hopefully he has been in decent sparring even before the announcement was made.
Incidently, here is a question that I hope the pro boxers/trainers can answer. What do you think of Mayweather's pad work. It looks great to watch but when he does it looking away, surely it must mean he's learned "routines" on the pads "parrot fashion" and therefore its not helping with the element of surprise that I like to see with Pad work.
Joe Calzaghe's pad work is also impressive, but you can hear Enzo calling the shots and therefore everything is not the same... This is how I prefer to see the pads being used. What do you think of it?
Its funny that both Floyd Snr and Roger are saying that they are number 1 coach, when neither IMO are fit enough to carry the guy in the opposite corner's jock strap.

Interesting weights: Oscar 154 (first attempt). Mayweather 150.
Advantage Oscar here IMO - being between 148 and 154 - suggest to me that Mayweather has bulked up to as big as he can (without losing speed) and thats still a decent advatange in size DLH holds.

Didn't notice any fly symptons but I agree about Mayweather's training, his pad work doesn't impress me since it's obvious they have a routine going on, not really testing his reflexes like they could with random sequences. His jump rope on the other hand..
Oscar did look abit soft against Sturm at 160, but looks in great shape for tomorrow.

De La Hoya by KO or clear enough points win.
I think the weight difference is to much for Floyd to handle, i see him having his moments but i think De La Hoya will tame him and eventually KO him, or, what i fear most, De La Hoya tame's him early, Floyd gets on his bike for the remainder of the fight loosing most rounds and pretty much spoiling the fight!

I really think a stoppage can be ruled out. Oscar is way too tough, Floyd surely way too conditioned and smart to be ground to a halt, or anything close to it.
Oscar looked fitter and happier than I've seen him for a long time against Mayorga, pressing the action quite relentlessly throughout. Conserving energy was certainly nowhere in his game plan. I think we can reasonably expect to see the same sharpness again, whether that will be enough to beat Mayweather at his own game is another matter entirely.
I'll stick with De La Hoya on points, deserved or not. If he looks fit and razor sharp throughout then his threatening forward presence and ocassional punch success is bound to please judges more than Mayweather's strive for reverse-gear perfection.

I figured Mayweather on points as soon as this was announced. And logic tells me that should still be the case. But...... Oscar looks in fantastic shape, and I'm starting to get the feeling that Floyd may well have jumped a division too far. I know the added weight/power is not the be all and end all. But whilst I can well remember Floyd's brilliance against the likes of Gatti and Corrales, I'm also starting to remember the fact that N'dou was able to land on him at times. My head still says Mayweather, but I can't shake the feeling that Oscar will catch him at some point...... Surely Mayweather won't be able to dance around DLH in the same way that he did against Baldomir? Plus, there has to be a reasonable chance Floyd will hurt one of his hands at some point. So basically, I have no idea now.
Sod it, enough sitting on the fence: Oscar is made to look silly a few times, but lands enough hard shots, and, tellingly, looks like the aggressor throughout the fight, which is enough for him to take a contentious points win.

De La Hoya KO10.
I'm praying. Act or not the way mayweather has acted in the press conference and 24/7 reflects badly. Cmon Oscar knock this punk out!

Going for Floyd as he raises his game.
I know there styles are nothing alike but its worth noting Floyd lost the first 3 or 4 rounds to Judah before taking complete control. I think if De La Hoya is to win this he has to take it to Mayweather early and can see him getting the opening few rounds and the first half being rather competitive. He done this with B-Hop.
If hes going to KO Mayweather it will come during this time. Goes beyond this and Mayweather should take it on points.
