Ah right, so we've narrowed it down to different levels of disrespect. Disrespecting an anthem is OK, but a flag isn't. I'm sure there's some logic in there somewhere.......
Well if you cant see the difference between a couple of boos and actually setting fire to something perhaps you should have gone to school more often....
As mentioned above, they both basically mean the same thing, you're insulting the country and, again as mentioned above, the American anthem means a hell of a lot to the Americans themselves, a hell of a lot more than GSTQ means to any Brit I'd wager. Maybe if you went to school a bit more often yourself, you'd learn these things

ah yes.........I thought that was a strange one........not sure about anti-american or whatever but it seems a million miles removed from all this ghetto hype. It's like mainstream rock/pop.....to me it looked like a blatant way of getting as many Americans "on-side" and behind him, not just on the night but also in terms of salvaging a semblance of popularity for the sake of his future business interests in his own country. To me anyway.
Um no Born in the USA is an American song about living post Vietnam Veteran in America, nothing anti American about it. As far as getting Americans on his side the Brits did that for him with their disrespect. A bunch of people who still worship someone just because of "blood line" what a sad bunch. Oh look here comes the Queen lest all boooo for fun.

Born in the USA may be filled with pseudo-vet-experience bullshit, but it didn't stop it from being used as Ronald Regan's campaign music first time around.

As I understand it the song is about the fact that according to the protagonist America's heroes aren't treated as such when they return home.

That is pretty much accurate but as you might imagine there is more to politics than can be explained in a few short words. It was a representation of America at a point in time.

Firstly if you read my posts you'll see that I said earlier that Americans and the Brits veiw their anthems differently imo, therefore the average American will take more offence to booing of their anthem, secondly there is a hell of a lot of difference between booing the anthem and setting flags alight, I assure you that had any flags been set alight last night then the fight wouldnt have taken place, ....its a totally different thing....

That is the biggest load of utter shit I have ever read.

9/11???? Constantly harping on about the death of 3,000 people, when more than that have died in countless atrocities - half of which have been instigated by the US.

Rwanda = 1,000,000,000 die. USA = doesn't give a shit....

A lot more than 3,000 innocent Iraqi civilians have died since your f*cking president decided your economy needed more oil. Wake up and smell the coffee.

The British have been dying for their flag before the USA even existed as a nation, so its a bit rich acting all sanctimonious over the behaviour of a few tossers who booed your anthem.

I was cringing at football hooligans booing the national anthem. What no-one has picked up on yet, which I presume it wasn't on TV, is that a Brit on my far right threw a bottle at Floyd when he got up on the ring post.

It missed him, thank God, but managed to land near David Beckham.

I thought this kind of behaviour had gone in the 80s, but obviously not.

Every American I've met here said the same thing; "I hate Mayweather, but I wanted him to fcking kill Hatton after that".

Thankfully there were only a few fights after the Garden Arena emptied. I was worried there'd be a riot.

Oh so those 3,000 people mean nothing? Youre a fool. All life means something, including those killed in Rwanda and wherever else (by the way, a billion deaths? Might want to check your facts before you run your mouth). I dont always agree with our president or the actions, but what can I do other than put in my one vote? Should we just show no sympathy for our fellow Americans that die because of someone elses decision? And, o yes, the war was about oil. Why dont you check how much oil Iraq exports and how the oil prices have fared since the beginning of the war...yea. By the way, was your country involved in Iraq at all?

I never disrespected Britain in my post, but you obviously do not have the maturity to do the same. I personally have a lot of respect for Brits, but not for you. YOUR post full of incorrect facts is, what do you call it, rubbish?

the people who take this personally are idiots. its all part of the fun of a sporting event, we weren't booing the country (i speak for the majority) we were booing any opposition to Hatton and trying to make it a hostile and rowdy atmosphere like we love it.

Quite right. I do not find myself booing other national anthems or nationalities along wider political leanings- never have.

I sometimes find the idealistic liberal slant on this board both baffling and hypocritical given what two elite fighters sometimes put themselves through (in their natural lives), or go through in general, and expect some sanitised PC microcosm of life as they think it should play out.

A fighter is a fighter and in most cases cares little about the wider world. Yet we have learned people, some with degrees hanging out their arses pontificating about how things should be by bringing boxing in as an analogy to show how liberally minded and tolerant they are.

It's only a song, big deal. Booing an anthem Is hardly a terrible thing.

Their Intention of doing It was to show heavy support for Hatton.

They did the same thing through the Australian anthem when Hatton fought Tszyu. Must be a Manchester thing.

No. It was a protest about the shitty way Vietnam Veterans were treated by their own government.

Anti-Government is not anti-nationality.

It is not only a song it's a national anthem intrinsically connected with people's sense of national pride. If the 5 pages of this thread (so far) hasn't made that clear nothing will.

The point has also already been made that cheering/chanting for Ricky was how the crowd showed support for Hatton. Booing the opponent/his country's anthem was to show distain for him which is a completely seperate thing.

You're pissing in the wind, lowersmiths. They'll never get it.

Here's the problem with booing, Silkov: Irrespective about what you think about your national anthem, for many people, their national anthems and national flags are almost sacred symbols of national pride. When you boo them, no matter what your intentions, you are knowingly disrespecting that symbol. In doing so you show a kind of ignorant uncouthness that paints you and, by association, all British sports fans in a disparaging light.
Surely it is better it is booed everytime to convince these people that their misplaced devotion to a tune through an accident of birth is ridiculous?
