Though I have Marciano as my favorite, I think it's better for me to talk about Mike Tyson, who was MY favorite fighter at any weight of my own time...
Tyson-Sanders
The so-called "World Tour" started and ended in Youngstown, Ohio. He was to have hundreds of four round exhibitions, and from all talk he was supposed to make more money off fighting bums than he ever did in his prime. We all knew it was just for him to get out of debt, that there was no serious comeback hopes, though rumors were rampant. Sanders wore headgear, Tyson didn't. He had him reeling, the crowd cheered. Tyson stopped and helped the man up, the crowd booed. After it was over, people were confused when no winner was announced, the general public doesn't understand like we do the difference in a real bout and an exhibition. Tyson, like he always done, showed flashes of his former glories in the ring, but this time he didn't stop because his body couldn't stand up to it, he wanted to stop...he didn't want to be Mike Tyson anymore.
Tyson-McBride
After destroying Clifford Ettienne inside of 45 seconds, we all wondered what stiff was next for Mike Tyson, who was working his way back to a title fight [at the time there was talk that the newly crowned WBC champion Vitali Klitschko would face off with Tyson, since it was his dream to take on 'Iron' Mike someday], and the answer was settled with 6'6" 260 pound Irishman Kevin Martin McBride, who was a Bronze medal winner and champion of the Emerald Isle. Outside of those accomplishments, McBride at best was a club fighter who struggled with Louis Monaco for Christ's sakes. We all thought it would be an easy night for Tyson, to pocket away a cool five million for possibly 20 seconds worth of work this time around...what we saw was a man who not only struggled to stumble the giant creme puff, but tried to wrench his arm out like he done with Botha, head butted, did everything he could think of to some how stop this behemoth...he even resorted to biting again, this time he bit McBride's chest...after the fifth it was all over, Mike Tyson quit on his stool, and flipped the bird to the audience who booed. At the press conference Tyson said, "If I cant beat guys like Kevin McBride, I cant be in boxing anymore."
Tyson-Lewis
THE BIGGEST PRIZE FIGHT OF ALL TIME...for one round, that is...after that it was the most heart wrenching, sickening, bruising, crushing affair I have witnessed...we all thought there would have been more to Tyson than what we got that night, despite beating on bums...what we saw was a man who was either unable to fight any more, or maybe, just maybe, he didn't want to be the monster anymore....
