This would have been an absolutely fantastic matchup. Both fighters like to lead off the front foot with Calzaghe using better upper body and lateral movement.
But as I said in the Pavlik-Lockett thread I think that at this realtive stage in their careers Pavlik will take Calzaghe. On his way up Pavlik has been a bit one dimensional even whilst beating tough fighters. As an underdog he beat the accomplished Taylor who in turn knocked Hopkins off his ‘legendary’ MW perch. And the guy is still developing and improving on his all round boxing smarts.
Pavlik is a heavy handed very strong long limbed fighter whose feet seem to be set most of the time when delivering combos. I think the penny has dropped for him in that with his physical attributes he doesn’t always need to swarm over his opponents – he now realises he can work opponents over by still backing them up but maintaining a bit of a gap whilst he’s still in range. This will give him more space and time to work his consistent punchrate to body and head whilst opening up hisheavy handed accurate combinations when his opponent inevitably falls short. With his outstanding stamina and workrate I think he has the ingredients to beat Calzaghe. It would have been a bruising fight but I do feel that Pavlik would have emerged the winner by points/stoppage The latter being a possibility because it's in JC's MO to not be able to resist a tear up.
IMO if Calzaghe takes this fight at this stage in his career and finds a way of beating Pavlik it would be a truly GREAT achievement..
