Thanks, Collins. Although he won, not one of Bugner's better performances though. The most interesting thing I saw/heard was at the end when Bugner and Warren being interviewed. Warren mentioned that he had Tex Cobb lined up for Bugner's next fight. I never knew about this but it would probably have been a good fight for Bugner at this stage. Both fighters were very durable and neither were particularly big hitters so I couldn't see a stoppage for either fighter, unless on cuts. Bugner, however, was more mobile and more skilled than Cobb (as were most) so I would probably have fancied Bugner on points. Cobb was still a 'name' at this stage so it would have been a good one to take. Did he fall out with Warren around this time or didn't it come off for some other reason?
ps have you got any of Bugner's early 'Aussie Joe' fights - Tillis or Page?
Yes, dire wasn't it?
I have those Bugner fights in Australia when he was re-inventing himself as Aussie Joe. I'll get to them eventually but next up will be the bouts against Marvis Frazier & Steffen Tangstad.
I'll resurrect the Bugner thread in the BOP section when I put the next one up; too many nutters on this thread.

Please, please, please Collins2000, for the sake of everyone and their therapists, do NOT put up Marvis Frazier vs Joe Bugner.
The ultimate sleepwalk.

You'd think so, but for some reason his fights seem popular. Something about the fellow, even in his snorathons gets people watching.
The Magri fights I put up are almost all 100% action but few people view them. Yet I put up Bugner vs Bodell (round 1) and it has has 1000 views!

I remember being allowed to stay up late as a kid to watch that one and fell asleep half way through. When I woke up I asked my dad who won, he didn't know either as he fell asleep too, thats a true story

I watched the fight and taped it, can you believe. Whenever I was bored, no matter what tape I stuck in the VCR, Frazier-Bugner would emerge like a nightmare. Marvis emulated his dad, of course, beating the negative Bugner. His mum would have licked Bugner that night.

Jesus Christ! I'd forgotten how good a performance this was from Jones. A lesson in how to win a European title abroad - destroy the man.

One of the saddest, most pathetic 'fights' I ever saw was Bugner v Bonecrusher Smith.
Just awful.
Up there with Duran v Lawlor I in terms of pathetic spectacles.

The way Jones closed the show in that fight was savage - showed his killer instinct and never let his man off the hook.
Great upload Collins - keep em coming

He told me plenty of stuff last night over the phone, his first reaction to the mention of Sykes name being a groan followed by 'thats a gruesome name from the past'. Some of the stuff he told me included how in the weights room Sykes had hit one of the prison officers over the head with a weight of some description and the fella never worked again.
He said another prison officer, possibly called Barry Ramsden (?) or Marsden (?), was a huge guy, 6'4'' and a former heavyweight boxer himself. At some point in the past Barry had shared a ring with Sykes, he said he had no skill at all and if you had the balls to stand up to him he wasn't that dangerous at all. The old man recalled vividly how he turned his back on John L Gardner because the fight was a bit tough and that was the officers general opinion of Sykes, he was just a bully who wanted to dish it out but couldn't take it.
My favourite story though was how he told me there was a pub very near Wakefield Prison that Sykes like to frequent. One of his habits was to go up to people who'd just bought a pint, stand over them & spit in it, knowing they wouldn't then drink it so he'd take it off them and drink it himself. Well one night in the late 80s he performed this trick on some young fella hanging out in the pub with a few quiet but mean guys. They said nothing, let Sykes have the pint and all left. A few hours later, Sykes came out of the pub in the dark, obviously a little worse for wear after how many drinks, and these guys were all waiting for him. Apparently these guys knocked him to the ground and absolutely brutalised him, worked over something fierce and were evn taking free kicks on his head. After the beating Sykes was not seen around that area for a very long time.
Couldn't of happened to a more deserving fella, and my dad felt everybodys a lot better off with the guy dead & buried.
First off let me just say, with no offence meant, that your dad was talking pure crap when he says a weight was used in the assault against the screws. Paul Sykes wasn't in Wakefield jail in the mid "80s for a start, it was Hull jail and one of the screws was called John Raine who was punched once and had his jaw broken. The other one, I can't recall his name, but he got a punch and suffered a couple of broken ribs.
Talking about bullies let me just remind you about the screw Raine- in Everthorpe Borstal in the 1970s, he was a true bully with boys as young as 15 so you see what goes around comes around. He got his just deserts in the end
Paul sykes was serving 30 months at the time and this sentence was increased to 6 years for the GBH on the 2 screws
Actually mate he was not talking pure crap. He made it very clear to me that when he started at Wakefield Prison in the mid-80s Paul Sykes was not there any longer, and if you read my post i never said Sykes was there at the time. He was recounting grim tales from long time prison officers.
And the fact you refer to prison officers as 'screws' speaks volumes about you.
I am not sticking up for Paul Sykes I am just pointing out about your dads facts regarding the assaults on the two "screws" No weights or weapons of any type were used.
I was also pointing out about the bullying tactics of the screw Raine in Everthorpe Borstal in the seventies. One of the biggest bullies you will ever meet, bullying and using heavy hand tactics on boys as young as 15 when he was in his late twenties.
I suppose you & your dad think that was okay though as they are only criminals.
I could recount endless "grim tales" about bullying screws if you wish.
And what's wrong with calling a screw a screw? Warden, Turnkey etc.

Sounds just deserving of that no good c*nt even thougn ihate people who attack people in groups. Lenny McLean wanted to fight sykes on the street and he wouldn't have, i know McLean wasn't that clever in the ring but on the street he was completely different, probably
Your dad was probably a bully too if he was a screw in the 80s as most of them were. It's not as easy these days to bully in jails when you are a screw.
Sykes was a bully , bullying the bullies in prison, ie: screws and they didn't seem to like it for some reason!! I wonder why.

Get the violins out!
How many people in jail are 'Robin Hood' types? or some poor sod who forgets to pay their TV licence? and how many are scum that steal, smash and even maim and kill their own? Most people in jail are horrid arseholes and if the worst they get is some screw bullying them then thats more clemency than their victims ever got.
I didn't know Sykes, there is enough on him out there to get a decent character assesment - a bad coont
which was shared by most. Nothing to defend is there?
