Do you then expect Kell to get those sort of fights then or would you expect his matchmaking to continue as it is?
In fairness he is still very young though
No, what i mean is ideally i would hope that a boxer would have those kind of fights gain valuable experience, so the jump in quality isnt as massive and they don't find it as shocking. But i understand this doesn't always happen as in the case of Lockett and Jennings. They went from domestic and trialhorse europeans to genuine pound for pounders. Huge step but both were chances of a lifetime that as kids and young pro's, you dream of.
As for Kell, i can't any longer speak for him on behalf of his career, but he is a genuine talent that could be put into those kind of superstar fights. However, i would really hope that he does get the fights to take him through the grades. To be fair, now he has the title, there is the opportunity to make good fights for him.
McIntyre was in most people's eye's the 'real champion'. So you can't knock that match. But i think guys like Matthew Hatton and Mutley are good fights for him where he learns things. O'Donnell is another kid that would be a test and a great learning fight. So there are guys out there who have 100% belief in their abilities and are good fighters. These are all fights where you can't bank on who's going to win really, which is what will get him a huge following should he come thru..Thats just domestic, then the euro route has one or two guys before a charge to world titles. Like you say, he is young, very young and can become a very very good fighter without rushing, but without wasting time against the wrong opponents.

But thats just my opinion.

I was asked about Kell mate.
My answer was if Kell was in a situation now where they were talking of fighting Cotto.

Jennings was right to take the fight. He's been highly ranked for about 18 month, just a shame he hasn't been busy through that time but he had to take his opportunity and see how he fares against the elite. He's in his 30's, had about 30 odd fights so yes in my opinion it was a great opportunity.. However, a few fights to bridge the gap would have helped his cause i reckon.
Fair play Dave on your response.
As for Jennings and the gap-bridging, in fact the Welter pack in Britain as a whole, personally I think it's strange that noone over here has had a crack at Jackson Osei Bonsu the European title holder, at least I think he still is. Instead he ends up boxing in some nothing fight against Carlos Baldomir.
Nah some polish bum has it now, and with the help of the judges defends it against other bums in Poland.

Jennings went in there and gave it 100% as he promised, but he was outclassed in there (by one of the top 5 best boxers on the planet, so there's no disgrace in that). I hope Jennings got himself a nice payday out of it and returns to British/CommonWealth/European scene

Mismatch of the year that was. Cotto would likely have KO'd him in the first round had Jennings not been doing the 100 meters backwards. I counted that during those 5 rounds Jennings did a full 284 ring laps, quite an achievement. Perhaps his plan was to try and hypnotize Cotto :oo

Listening to his corner during the breaks "your doing smashing lad, just fine" and "run Michael, run" gave me the impression that none of them fancied the job at all.

The ref stopped the fight not because Jennings had been seriously injured, but because he knew his heart was not in it and took pity on him. Am i the only one who felt embarassment for Jennings at that moment?

well said.....he did his best, was no disgrace.

Showed good footwork but even if he'd hit Cotto flush all night he would never have had the power to trouble him.

I guess Jennings was just trying to keep Cotto quiet for a few rounds, quiet the crowd down a bit and see how things panned out.

To an extent he did acheive that objective by getting on his bike and then when he tried to start chucking the right in a bit (with a little success I thought but clearly didn't hit hard enough to bother Cotto so it became clear then that he was Donald Ducked) gave Cotto a target and it was goodnight.

He did ok really, I don't think he disgraced himself or damaged his reputation in any way.

I think you might be - Hughes woulld have pulled him out during the break and he was not going to KO Cotto in the lkast seconds of the round or later so it was rightly stopped.

Jennings did himself proud. Tactics spot on but stepping in to punch gave Cotto the way in he was looking for - stopped on your feet by a compassisonate ref - no disgrace.

:D

Jennings best chance (albeit a slim one) was to keep the fight at long range and take Cotto to the later rounds if poss, were you expecting him to run head first into Cotto at the first bell?

Jennings was beat before he got in the ring. It seemed clear in the interviews prior to the fight he had little belief in his ability to win the fight.

yeah i don't think that's true, i think jennings believed he could win, but believing, and doing it is a complete different matter.

hmmm, cotto was just too good, and jennings probably realised that quite early on. we just watch the fighters, we know their good, but when you're in their actually experiencing it they're probably alot better than you even originally thought.

Looks like Jennings got paid handsomely...

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing ... id=3925174
But Cotto, 28, who earned at least $1 million to Jennings' $250,000, has something bigger on his mind.

why does it say Jennings got that specific figure (£172,580.42) and then say that Cotto got at least a million dollars (i.e. non specific)?

YOU!.......go and find out. :x

lol, Kidding. I hope he remembers to pay his taxes before he spends that all, I hope he didn't have to in an ideal world. It's a cracking payday for him well done :TU:

For fcuks sake man, he was in a world title fight topping the bill in Madison Square Garden and your making it out like his mistake was stepping in to punch. What kind of horse sh=t is that. Should he have kept on circling all night then and threw fcuk all....... perhaps he could have went the distance with Cotto doing that. Shame, cause now we'll never know! :( Oh what could have been!

Then you just don't have the confidence to stand and fire off with them. The confidence to do that just leaves you.
Stop being so modest, Dave. You know this would never have happened to you as you had a right equaliser! Just ask Terence Gaskin! :D

There's a difference between keeping a fight at long range and back-peddeling at 100mph. I dont want to disrespect Jennings, he seems like a decent guy but he was clearly out of his depth and he fought like he knew it. Its when i hear comments like "well done, you gave it your all " you did yourself proud" "it was a good stoppage" etc etc, that stuff riles me.

1) Jennings was out of his depth. 2) He fought like he knew it

The ref stopped it not because Jennings was taking a beating but because he recognised points 1 and 2 above. So cut the horse sh*t, i'm not out to diss Jennings, just trying to keep it real!

We all know Jennings was out of his depth, it was as clear as day from the moment it was signed, but how is that Mikeys fault? Do you think he should have turned the BIG payday down?

I thought Jennings fought with the best possible tactics available to him IMO, if he'd have run head on into Cotto it would have been over sooner. IMO it was bets for him to try and keep out of Cottos way and hopefully put his stamina to the test later on, but basically he was fcuked whichever way he fought

I never said anything was Jennings fault. He took the pay day just like most other fighters in his position would have. I've no complaints with him doing that.

To be perfectly honest, i'm fcuked if i know what tactics would have been best for Jennings. All i know is what i seen, he back pedeled around the ring in order to stay out of Cotto's way, but it was always evident Cotto was going to close him down, and Jennings himself knew it. And when he did catch up with him, Jennings clearly wanted out. I'm not accusing him of taking a dive, but his heart was not in it, hence the reason the ref stopped it. So all this bollocks about Jennings giving it his all, people sounding of like he left his heart and sole in that ring must have been smoking crack as they watched the fight!
