Was Nigel Benn really shot post - Mcclellan ??

He had NEVER thrown a 6-punch combination with every shot landing before, like he did gainst Nardiello.. He had NEVER targetted the body with pinpoint accuracy like he did gaainst Perez.. He had NEVER timed a righthand so perfectly like he did against Malinga.. He had NEVER timed counterpunches so perfectly like he did against Collins.. also his technique on the lefthooks against Collins was out of this world..

Yes Collins was a monster at that time but those 10 rounds were really quite even overalll..

Sure he was throwing most of his punches off - balance in these fights but then he always did.. he always threw punches off - balance.. the fight he threw the least punches off - balance in his whole career was the Mcclellan fight, his bestever performance..

Greg,

I think lack of love for the game played a big part in his performances post Mclellan, I think that he left a lot in the ring that night against Mclellan.

Nigel had a shadow on his brain after the Mcclellan fight.

He was never the same after that.

Wouldn't say he was shot(he'd have coped against most of the top fighters at that time) but I think he'd lost a lot of his desire after McClellan.

Yes he was shot.

He kept falling over himself and he was out of range all the time.

He was awkward in the last few fights but abit shit really, his dreads with the constant head movement helped his awkardness.

He took a serious ammount of punishment from McClellan, he discharged himself from hospital and had to be lifted in and out of baths, FFS.

Nigel had x-rays all over and was injured all over, including in the brain!!

The Benn who fought Barkley and DeWitt on the Strip and Boardwalk and Eubank at Old Trafford and Wharton was long gone against Collins.

He wasn't timing Collins, he just had a lot of natural talent and was such a natural puncher.

Benn (perhaps my favourite fighter of all time, as it goes) went downhill very rapidly after beating the G-Man. OK, he did well against Nardiello and Perez but his first fight against Collins was only something like just over a year after his fight with McClellan.

I would say he had very little left in either fight with Collins. A shadow of what he was.

The shadow on the brain most likely caused him to have poor balance etc, plus it was a war.

He was never the same after that, but would still beat most out there on raw power alone.

He didn't do well against Nardiello or Perez. He looked horrid!

Perez was a late replacement for Steve Little, Don King moving him from WBC #26 to WBC #10 overnight. He had Benn out on his feet.

I was very dissappointed he quit against Collins.

As Chris Eubank said at the end of last year (in reference to Oscar/Benn): "The pain will go away. But giving up will stay with you for the rest of your life."

I didn't think anything could possibly taint that G-Man victory and his career up to that point. But that did, tbh.

He did well in that he stopped both of them, that was all I meant. I didn't say he looked particularly good.

After the GMAN fight he had the shadow on the brain and also internal damage, kidney or liver damage from memory, also he broke his jaw didn't he? Completely done after GMAN

Agree with everyone, else, he was pretty much done after McClellan, and it's not surprising. He shoudl have retired after Malinga II at the latest.

what's all this about a shadow on the brain? This is the first I've heard of it.

Thanks guys.. He just didnt look SHOT to me, body perfectly sculptured, fast punches, perfect punches, beautiful bodymovement, beautiful leverages etc etc.. SHOT is a strong word he shifted an incoming Collins 6ft back with a lefthook..

u honestly believe nardiello and perez were good performances.

perez was a virtual clubfighter and he laboured.

admittedly nardiello was a right spoiler but he still underperformed.

he was on the downslope simple as. :(

Presuming that you're talking about the second fight, why were you disappointed? Would you have preferred him to take some more unnecessary punishment for a few rounds?
Pain may go away, but brain damage doesn't.
He didn't actually quit either. Kevin Sanders sent him out with the clear warning that he would pull him out if he took a lot more punches. That's exactly what happened and Sanders did the decent thing and pulled him out, an all too rare case of a trainer looking out for his fighter's long term best interests.
