My all-time favourite performance by an Australian fighter overseas was the effort by Jimmy Carruthers in knocking out Vic Toweel in Johannesburg, South Africa on 15th November 1952 in becoming Australia's first universally recognised boxing World Champion. The fight only lasted 2 minutes and 19 seconds and Jimmy is estimated to have throw 147 punches in that time and Vic responded with 1 and that one missed.

The rare film footage of this bout is amazing to watch in seeing the amazing hand speed of Jimmy at that time.

Jimmy Curruthers also deserves a mention (along with his opponent) for a title defence in Thailand? where a typhoon hit the area. The fight was outdoors and the ring got wet which made it slipperys so the fighters took their boots off. Then some of the ring lights exploded so the fighters ended up avoiding the others punches as well as the broken glass on the canvas

Carruthers' 19 second demolition of Vic Toweel was a special effort. Two years earlier Toweel had taken the bantamweight title from Manuel Ortiz, who had held the belt for most of the previous 8 years, broken only by a two months spell in 1947 between his losing the title to Harold Dade and Ortiz winning it back.

Kelly v Reid was a close fight and went to the home team. Bones had Reid down in the 5th but he wasn't hurt and staggered him in the 12th. Bones didnt really have a mark on him and Reid eye (bad eye lid) was closed. The crowed booed the decision. Bones performance was unbelievable considering:
1/ He averaged 4ht=rs sleep a night (couldn't adjust to the time zone)
2/ Took us a day to get there (Atlantic city) waiting hours fior a lift.
3/ Didn't have a room for us and we shared for a few days.
4/ Dispute over money.
5/ etc
If bones was given the decision then a multi million dollar fight against Trinidad may have eventuated. Instead he wa back in Oz beating Darren Maciunski (former WBU champ) for around $8,000. Reid lost on pts to Trinidad who had his measure but if a few of those uppercuts had hit it may of been lights out for Tito. What ifs? The worst decison in England for many years when Bones was ripped against Pyatt the former WBO champ.

Bones was tough, poetry in motion and could read a fight and fighter beautifullu. He cut badly though and if he had a little more poewer he would of been champ if he got to fight other champs of lesser quality as Reid.
