Greg Page died at his home due to complications from the Crowe fight.

Sorry to hear the news. I remember Page back in his amateur days. The guy was blazing fast and a sure hit to be a future champion. He appeared to be Ali all over again. Never quite reached his potential but he still got a piece of the title. RIP.

sad news. doesn't seem that long ago he was gracing the covering of KO and Ring Magazine as the next big thing. But it was a generation ago. Time marches on. If you only knew then how things would end. Everything was so bright and positive.

I was a fan of Gregs as a kid in Louisville, Kentucky. Many thought he was the next Ali !!
My first fight in Vegas I fought guy from Jamaica & Greg worked his corner. I stopped guy & Greg told me congratulations after fight & I told him about being a fan of his when I was growing up in KY. After Gregs injury I did a benefit fight for him and was able to raise some money & then when My family & I went home to visit family in Kentucky we made arrangements to stop by & visit Greg and his family with my Wife & Kids. He & Patricia treated us very good & it was honor to see him.

He was Great Boxer & it was Honor to meet a HERO of mine.

RIP champ. this is a shame.

This was a poem I had written for Greg back in June of 2002.

GREG PAGE THE LORDS CHAMP
He came from the town of Louisville
And boxed his way into the heavyweight scene
Jabbin' and dancin' and beatin' them all
All the heavyweight's know what I mean

He sparred with Ali and boxed with the best
Winning the USBA heavyweight belt
Giving Greg a taste of the future
Feeling what a heavyweight champion felt

He had some ups and downs along the way
Losing a few fights here and there
But those who knew of his tremendous skill
Really they did not care

Greg went all the way to Africa
Gave Coetzee's face the official Greg Page stamp
And flew back home to America
As the newly crowned heavyweight champ!

Although he lost his title reign
He did not lose his heart
He stuck it out and showcased his skills
Cause Greg and boxing would never part

He fought a fight that would change his life
As he faced a young Dale Crowe
And when Greg walked into the ring that night
The decision only God would know

The Lord has a path for our former champ
As he's facing his toughest fight
But along the way he's touching souls
And bringing everyone's life a new light

RIP Champ. I can only hope that we learned something from the sacrifice you made for your sport.

RIP Greg Page.

One of the nice guys in boxing. Had a ton of talent but wasn't always 100%. The fact that he did well late in his career proved that he could have been better during his prime. 58-17-1 (48) overall and 1-2 (1) HW world title fights. He was the WBA HW champ and fought for the WBC belt as well. Among others he faced Trevor Berbick, Tim Witherspoon x2, Gerrie Coetzee, Tony Tubbs, Buster Douglas, Orlin Norris, Razor Ruddock, Bonecrusher Smith, Francesco Damiani, Bruce Seldon, and Monte Barrett. His last fight was in 2001 vs. Dale Crowe. He was stopped in 10, a serious brain injury and massive stroke followed which resulted in paralysis on his left side and ultimately his death more than 8 years later.

its a shame he kept on fighting, here's why Evander should retire...

Very tragic news to hear about Greg Page, he was a very good HW in his time. He was also the first boxer to drop & hurt Mike Tyson during a sparring session back in the 80s.

To be fair, Evander is still holding his own in world class company, not struggling against club fighters in Kentucky high school gymnasiums.

It's hard to say if Greg's age contributed to his injury (it certainly didn't help) but it was pretty much an isolated incident. I haven't known a heavyweight to suffer such a serious brain injury in as long as I've been following boxing (since 1990).

(Michael Bentt and Joe Mesi did suffer brain inuries but these were not life-threatening)

Greg didn't want to be a boxer, he wanted to be a basketball player.And his father forced him into the sport.And that is why he's dead today.
