As some of you know I interviewed Pat Gregs wife as to Gregs plight a couple of years back, as such i have occasional email contact.

Post your well wishes here and Ill send Pat the link in due course as I know she finds it a great comfort that fans still remember Greg as the champ he was and the subsequent fight for health, that now he has sadly lost.

Very sad news indeed that Im totally gutted about.

seconded there buddy.

for those of you who dont remember, greg was a fantastic pro in his day, a real fighters fighter. he was a big punching brute of a man, held the wba title, knocked out some big names (witherspoon etc) and got counted out against some big names too (ruddock etc).

but....for those more astute in the sport, greg page was the man who put a dent in the invincible aura that had surrounded mike tyson in his early-ish years. greg dropped tyson while sparring, no mean feat with those gloves on.

sad loss and a decent great man, went on fighting 3 years longer than he should of.

I am Patricia the wife of Greg Page. Since his injury in Mach of 2001, Geg has been hospitalized close to 200 times with various life theatening infections. He neve gave up his zest for life lately he has gotten much worse, at time his kidneys had shut down and then started back working sluggishly. He kept trying and never gave up. This morning when I found him dead in his bed he had the most peaceful serene look on his face. I know for sure he is in heaven and he is pain or mysery no more-- he suffers no more.

I too interviewed Patricia (Greg's wife) for an article in Boxing News (the Christmas edition after his accident, I believe it was).

Three things I concluded from the interview:

1) By all accounts the medical facilities at the event were very poor, as was the response time of the emergency services. Apparently it was the best part of an hour before Greg arrived at hospital, as there was no ambulance at the venue. I seem to remember there wasn't even oxygen available and the ringside doctor failed to grasp the severity of what had happened, saying Greg was just "exhausted". Of course nothing would have prevented the injury happening - and Greg fighting at his age is another concern entirely - I'm sure the extent of the injury would have been less with effective and prompt medical care on the night. To that end, he may still have been with us today.

2) What really shone from Patricia was her love and dedication to her man, as well a very strong and calming sense of faith. I'm not religious personally, but could see this was an enormous help to both of them. The positivity that shone out of Patricia at such a dark time was really inspiring and I couldn't help buit come away from the interview feeling positive about Greg's recovery. Alas it was not to be, but by all accounts he gave it his all and fought with pride to the very end.

3) While the Pages struggled for money to meet Greg's medical bills, and inevitably sought fundraising, what was significant to me was that neither Greg nor Patricia saw money as the most important aspect at the time. She said Greg would open cards and letters from fans and smile and say "They haven't forgotten about me", and that this pleased them more than any amount of money.

Greg was a fine talent in the ring and showed enormous courage in his fight to overcome his injuries, while Patricia proved a perfect and tireless companion to him, caring for him and fighting to make right the wrongs of that terrible night, yet always remaining positive and courteous to all. Wonderful people.

May Greg rest in peace and may Patricia take strength from knowing her husband's courage humbled so many of us.
