Was the Rematch between David Haye and Carl Thompson ever discussed?

Surely Haye would have wanted to avenge his only defeat and show that he just gassed in the 1st fight plus its always the reason most people use against him when discussing his chances at Heavyweight. If he'd had a rematch and decisively defeated Thompson in the same way RJJ did with Griffin and Williams did with Quintano, no one would use the Thompson fight against him.

After the Thompson defeat on Sept 2004, Haye went on to defeat Valery Semishkur, Garry Delaney, Glen Kelly, Vincenzo Rossitto and than win the EBU title against Alexander Gurov in Dec 2005

Thompson didnt fight again till Nov 2005 against Frederic Serrat which was the last Fight of his Career.

Why didnt David Haye try to make a Rematch Fight between Sept 04 and Nov 05 to put the record straight on his only Loss?

As I recall Thompson had injury problems after the Haye fight which kept him out of the ring for a fair while and when he came back against Serrat 14 months later he was poor and 41 years old, so he called it a day.

I might not be 100% spot on, but that's how I recall events

No way should Haye have fought Thompson after the Serrat fight. Carl was finished that night and thankfully hasn't fought since

i remember thompson wanting to be paid respectablly for it,& hayemaker couldnt accomodate.

Essentially it was down to money

Exactly. It's a shame Carl didn't finish his career with a good payday. He deserved it.

Yes it was - FACT.

But Carl rightly wanted "champions" money and with the money Team Haye wanted it meant the fight was not vaible - so I am led to believe!!

Yeah Thompson looked dreadful in his last fight and I imagen anyone who was his friend told him never to fight again. It's a shame for Haye because it'll always be used against him but it would have been a meaningless fight Thompson looked to have so little left.

If it was a matter of money than kind of explains certain things about Haye to me in terms of his psychological make up, i mean if i'd been beaten no way would i let money get in the way in order to Avenge a defeat.

Surely Haye should have been haunted by defeat and hungry to get back in the ring with Thompson to rectify it no matter if he didnt make much money!

Thompson was a shot fighter when he fought Serrat
Haye might have taking the last bit of fight of him in that battle,
what a battle it was aswell

yep thats spot on as i remember it as well

i presume haye was more concerned with turning the loss to a positive and getting the fights that would move him up to genuine world class. which is what he did, especially with the gurov and fragomeni fights - what better fights to prepare him for macca and mormeck, physically/stylistically? worked out very well for him.

Money was the over-riding factor!!!

Thompson at his age wanted a decent pay day!!

To be fair, Carl Thompson was 58 years old at the time of the proposed rematch

Of course any boxer wants a pay day - but in this case Thompson wanted one of the very best if not Number 1 pay day of his career and as already stated with what Team Haye were requesting meant the fight was simply not viable - in addition at the time neither fighter sold a lot of tickets which put a final nail in the coffin!!!

That's wrong. Thompson actually wanted a tad less than what he got paid first time round. Still a good payday, but not a mega one by any means. The problem was that Haye was now a Sky Sports fighter and Sky Sports just didn't have the money to pay Thompson even a fraction of what they got for their first fight on the BBC. It's a shame it never happened again.

Yes, he looked absolutely woeful against Serrat, and sensibly decided to hang em up.
