"I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it."

this is even better than Joe saying he doesn't want to be a typical WBO champ, that would be too easy I want to be like Leonard, McCallum, etc

classy Joe

Judging from some earlier your posts you clearly know a lot about boxing and definately worth paying attention to but your incessant bashing of Calzaghe undermines some of that credibilty.
You can flame me for saying this if you want, but I wouldn't have bothered at all if I didn't have some underlying respect for your overall contributions.

Totally agree. He seems to be obsessed almost as much as Froch. Judgement clouded. Facts are that Joe is one of the best fighters to come out of Britain, one of the best SMWs ever, unified the division, won every single belt at SMW, put his belt on the line to fight a two belt undefeated younger and stronger champ, and won, retired undefeated. Not to mention going over to America two fight two legends, one of which proved to be very much alive, and after being put on the floor in front of an American crowd, got back up to be victorious.

Joe had difficulties getting fights early on due to risk reward ratio e.g. Hopkins, but in the end dominated the division.

As for Froch, well Im very happy for him after his latest achievement, but truth is he was completely outclassed for 11 rounds, by a boxer who has seen better days (note that Joe was criticsed on here several years ago when he was after a fight with Taylor!). Difference between Joe and Froch in terms of talent and acheivements is immense, with Joe leagues ahead.

Box rec members aside, I cant think of one decent pro (ex or current) who does not acknowledge what a talent Joe was, and what heights he reached. Winning sports personality of the year for a boxer is pretty incredible in this day and age, particularly when you consider this happened after the Kessler fight which was not even on terrestrial. Anyway, thats me done on this subject.

Winning personality of the year when you don't own one makes it an even bigger achievement.

Autobarn does call a spade a spade and your assertion that Joe could not get the big fights is waffle I think.

"I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it." how can that be argued with ? his own words. By that measure, Calzaghe wanted an absolute fortune to fight anyone, despite achieving nothing to warrant the asking price a.k.a 'pricing himself out of any danger'.

A tepid fight with Kessler, followed by two fighters aged 84 does not remedy an entire career of non-risk and mediocrity.

And with regards Froch getting outboxed for long spells - well, that's what happens in genuine fights my friend.

It's not scripted WWE at the top of championship boxing, unless it invloves the WBO of course. You know that organisation that ranked a dead fighter, then after he'd been dead several months began moving him up the rankings. Such is their dedication to the sport.

i salute you gomez for digging this all up,b'coz ive allways rememberd how jc has been, allways casted in the shadows of are real fighters like naz, lewis, then more recently hatton.

i remember him reiterating naz comments like, they just cant take the power,or dont blink & even tried dancing with his two left feet.yet when naz is facing champions at there height then lose's to a prime barrera jc would shout from the rooftops he's undefeated & the best brit after defeating a sobot or thornberry??
if it wasnt for hatton attracting fan's jc would be boxing in york hall :!: .hatton has brought fans to the sport that are clueless & have jumped on the calzaghe retirement farewell band :!:

The record book says Joe W12 Jones... Thats all that matters. He was probably just been polite showing his usual class. He may have the looks of a model but Cazzy is ALL fighter.

Whereas Froch's personality is so great that not one TV company made an offer to show the fight live. And this was a guy who was given the biggest PR launch to a career on the BBC, where Bunce kept calling him the greatest prospect in world boxing.

What is the point of this thread. Another bitter thread knocking Calzaghe from a Froch fan. Give it a break.

All this crap does is make people who like Calzaghe, hate Froch. And a lot of people like Calzaghe.
So Froch gets a name as a guy with a chip on his shoulder and when he fights for a world title, he sells less tickets in his home city than Amir Khan did when he boxed there against some unknown Belarussian.

i'm a purist and I know a class fighter when i see one.... Calzaghe is the best. He was taking it easy on Jones... even Enzo said so after the fight. Thats why he did all those crazy showboating moves. I thought he looked really classy when he did that and then through the deadly combos.

FFS can't ppl have a bit of fun, with the tit for tat

frankly, i was very disappointed with the calzaghe comments on froch's 2 thrilling world title fights

i have defended joe as a major british fighter due to his success in two weights - particularly on the current scene; and if i was a BWAA writer i'd vote in in the HOF when it was time. but his title fights were not all legit, and after some brilliant showings made some cynical career moves

to see a guy can dismiss competitive title fights vs good fighters is frankly disgraceful. enzo calzaghe gave froch very little credit. now, i can remember floyd mayweather sr criticising joe's style after hopkins fight: "he's the worst fighter in the world and fights like a washerwoman".

joe had the P4P #1 spot within arm's length. and then he fought a guy he'd already dismissed as shot. joe could have made a case for being the best ever brit. being the p4p #1 would have rivalled lewis' accomplishments as THE heavyweight champion.

Sorry but i didnt know that Joe fought for his world title on ITV prime time with 9,000 in attendance and a tv audience of millions in the fight of 2008 like Carl did.

And I apologise sincerely for merely re-printing Joe's very own words !

Here's a puzzle for you - match up who said these comments :-

"I probably wounldn't risk it (fighting unbeaten Roy Jones).... unless i got the crown jewels"

"I fought Taylor and knocked him out on his own soil. I could take an easy fight at home, but I cant get up for that. I want Kessler next and will fight him in Copenhagen to spice it up a bit".

"What would i gain by being the third man to knock out Roy Jones."

"I'll fight anyone anywhere."

Calzaghe defended his world title on prime time ITV in front of 12,000 against Bika and in front of 37,000 against Manfredo. And the viewing figures dwarfed Froch's.

But your type of comments are the exact reason why Froch is unpopular. Sound bitter, badmouth another popular fighter. Great tactics.

How many interviews has Calzaghe given - 2,000? 3,000? And you drag some quotes up from probably eight years ago.

How about some more recent quotes. Froch says he will fight Calzaghe at light-heavyweight after Calzaghe beats Hopkins, but as soon as he wins the world title, he says he wouldn't risk it and would only fight at catchweight. Backtracking? Double standard?

I'll think you'll find, if you read the aticle properly, JC is discussing fighting Jones at LH. At the time JC was a SMW and from what I interpret he is saying he knows his limitations if he was to fight Jones at LH. People are taking the article out of context and making of it what they will!

How many were watching when he won the title Gobbles? on that Johnny Nelson undercard ?

it's all very well giving Bika as an example but you know thats a very limp response as Joe had been a 'champion' for over a bloody decade by that point ! and was it FOTY? nope it was a truly dreadful peformance, full of slaps, gurning and bum wiggling showboats.

Calzaghe weighed 166 for Kessler and barely 173 for Hopkins. Froch has always said he'd fight Joe at Light heavyweight but if not would simply pursue the WBC title - and said it after Rybacki on national tv because he believes Joe is not a true light heavy so your wrong there.
