I'm not paying for the Hatton-Manny fight

Thought a little about posting this but decided to.

Boxing on Sky is now shite. I pay £40 a month and they serve up uninspiring shite (see the 'Friday Fight Night' thread as a case in point) so object to coughing up another £15 on principle.

I don't want to watch the fight live as I can't really do it these days and I resent paying £30 a year to watch Ricky Hatton fight so I will be downloading the fight first thing on Sunday morning and watching it around lunchtime when the download is ready.

I know some people drew criticism for refusing to pay for the Froch-Taylor stream and wondered how people felt about this, perhaps differently because Froch has cashed far less than Hatton?

Don't know, all I know is how I feel and Sky can phuck right off to be blunt.

Why would you create a thread admitting been as tight as a ducks arse and not been able to stay awake?

Maybe it's worth cancelling Sky Sports and just buying the pay-per-views?

He's admitting to feeling ripped off. I don't blame him.

That's the way to go. I cancelled just after they lost Haye.

Khan's PPV, Hatton's PPV and watching the olympians 'early years', isn't worth the price tag. Sky's utter disdain for the sport should have seen every boxing fan dump them long ago.

If you really cant live without Friday Fight Night (I've absolutely no idea why that would be the case), just join a stream site.

Paying the same amount for a Khan PPV is a rip off. Compared to most of the PPVs this is great value.

I suggest we all start a campaign against PPV, and subcription-based channels like Sky and Setanta. They take our money and don't buy every single fight in the world -- what a rip off.

I say we all boycott Setanta, Sky, PPV, and any ITV match with long advert breaks -- basically any TV channel that tries to actually make money. That way -- with a bit of luck -- we can get back to the good old days when boxing was restricted to far-less-frequent-than-we-like-to-remember live fights of big British stars fighting against other british stars, and the occasssional highlights of fights on Sportsnight and Granstand.

Ahhh... they were the days "...we pick up the action in the fourth." Hardly any boxing -- but at least we didn't have to pay.

I would much rather go back to that than be, you know, given a choice.

Probably be going out to watch it so the only thing I'll be paying for is my hangover :D

Never usually buy PPVs anyway certainly not the four in the morning jobbies, can see it for eff all the following week for your normal subscription fee.

Won't cancel Sky though, too many sports that I like are shown on it.

Haha so true mate totally agree. If you don't wana pay you don't have to, but this is a superfight and I think that this is one ppv that is worth the fee, chip in with your mates if you are skint.

I have SKy and Setanta but no SKY sports as FNF have been poor for a long time, so Im glad this is a PPV.

To be honest, the British leg is pretty decent, Moore, Munroe, Williams, Jeffries - and the Hatton fight should be an absolute cracker. Looking forward to it - hopefully I get to see my team St,Johnstone win the Scottish first division in the afternoon, so I will be buzzing already!

Eeerrr... hasn't he just done that?

BTW, I'd like to say that I'm not paying to see 'The Duchess', currently showing on Sky Box Office. But of course, I never claim to be a passionate fan of period dramas and Ralph Fiennes.

I agree with Goz about feeling ripped off by Sky and i'd never pay for the Khan PPV's can't believe anyone does to be honest, but Hatton v Pac should be a great fight, so on this occasion, ive coughed up my £15 quid. :TU:

Nought to do with being tight. I pay for Setanta and they will continue to get my dosh for the forseeable future as long as they continue showing decent fights from the US and of course David Haye - was dissapointed they didn't pick up Froch-Taylor though.

As others said, I feel ripped off - would you pay £10 for a can of coke? No of course not, you place a value on something and unless you are stupid you won't go much above that.

Yes compared to other PPVs (like Amir khan) then Saturday isn't bad but all in all in terms of boxing Sky have gone right down the pan, the domestic shows are very poor, if they were delivering on that front then maybe I'd think 'ok they are good value I'll go the extra £15 to watch a repeat in the morning' (I have done that before several times) but they are just ripping me off and are indeed on very thin ice with Mr Goz with regard to getting cut off completely.

Just to add - a bit like it did with the record industry I hope the internet can serve to bite the greedy television companies on the arse eventually.

Back in the late nineties and early noughties you often paid £15 for a band's new CD - stuck it on and realised it was pretty poor, just one or two decent tracks for £15. Rip off.

Then along came Napster followed by pervasive broadband and all the other P2P variants and everyone was downloading free music.

End result? New CDs are often available at £7/£8 now. Less profit for fat cat record executives and more music for us.

Long may free streaming and illiegal downloading exist and perhaps we will see better value from tossers like Sky.

Yeah I can well understand you giving it a miss Goz, on principle - not so much the PPV, as it IS a decent fight, and deserves PPV as a stand alone event - but the way they treat boxing is a complete shambles.
I cancelled Sky sports last year, and can't see I've missed any decent fights at all. It's pretty much Eurosport stuff they show there days.

So I'll be getting the PPV in this instance.

I'd have paid for the Froch online as well, if ITV hadn't stepped in at last minute. It's great to be a least given the option of paying to watch a fight online - instead of the complete blackout we had to put up with back in the 80's.

Got rid of Sky Sports last year and I haven't missed it one bit. Complete shite.

Is there any chance that the BBC will screen this on delay like they have done with other big fights?

I don't mind paying for this level of fight. I can be a bit of a technology geek and it being shown in high definition is a bonus too.

Sky's general attitude to boxing really stinks though. Its clear they are offering us just enough (or not as some of the comments on this thread indicate) for us addicts not to cancel. FFN is more often than not abysmal. The presenters and guests are clearly caught up in the big sky culture of 'everything we show is brilliant, the stuff we don't show..well that doesn't exist'.
It's insulting and it hurts me to watch at times. The contrast at setanta makes the product on sky smell even worse.

Don't understand those slating setanta. Five years ago if someone had asked what I want from a £12 a month sports channel, it wouldn't look very different to our yellow, strangely named pals.

thing is though Setanta is nearly twice the price of Sky Sports

& SP used to show the big Yank shows for 'free' until Setanta bought them

Really - that's a pretty good deal! I might tell Sky to eff off too then. Only problem is, no domestic boxing though.
