im writing a piece about how if people arnt brought up properly psychologically right what effects that can have on there lives if all they have learnt if physical things (as in its more important to learn how to interact with others as a small child rather than cook, hold a pen the right way, drive etc as that can be learn t later on) and i thought as benitiez problem with his father about how he was brought up with boxing as number 1 rather than primary education then latter his problems post retirement i was wondering if anyone knew of any good reliable sources i could use on this

I'm trying to remember the book in which it stated that Benitez would shit in towels in his hotel room because he wasn't used to a toilet.

If you can't find much on Bentiez' upbringing then do some research on the Ayalas. I don't think their upbringings were too dis-similar (boxing was everything and everything else was nothing according to the old man)

Theirs something in this month’s issue of boxing monthly, it basically said that Wilfredo’s father shaped him into an exceptional boxer from infancy with the sole intention of living off him when he made it (so no guidance/love etc in any other part of his life).

Sounds like the crazy Hilton clan. Living out of a trailor, no education, no life, just training for boxing and nothing else. No surprise all the brothers ended up as sociopaths.

My understanding is that the Benitez wierdness was due to the fact that he had been diagnosed with fairly serious brain damage as early as the late seventies (having been boxing since he could basically walk). His problems later in life werent due to his upbringing per se, they were and are due to the fact that he has very serious brain damage and is little better than a vegetable.

I remember one time he and Carlos Deleon were at the gym I trained at in Chicago. It was 83.Maybe 82.
I dont think he fought here though and I dont remember who he boxed with that day.Deleon fought Ratliff but I think that was a little later on.
I do remember us bumping into each other.Neither us bothered with an excuse me.Benitez was a great fighter, but he did seem a bit eccentric.

The moderator, Paul, kindly informs me that this rather unseemly story was highlighted in an early Tyson book, possibly the Heller book. The towels belonged to that old lady who lived with Cus and acted as Tyson's surrogate mother.

PS: I had a recent word with my twin brother (also a big boxing fan) and apparently Benitez wiped his arse with the towels as opposed to actually shitting in them, then hid the towels under a bed. As Paul says, check out the Heller biography on Tyson.
