I felt sorry for Hatton on Saturday

A lot of people seem to be revelling in his defeat, and whilst I always did'nt like the way he never boxed Junior, I have to say it is never nice seeing anyone go down like that on Saturday night. I was genuingly worried for a couple of minutes or so though, and would like to him retire from that.I think there is a couple of thinks that can be taken from it 1) hatton can no longer take a big shot and thus is not the fighter he once was and 2) Manny Pacquaio is as good a fighter as will see for many, many years. It it going to take one hell of a performance to beat him.

You have to box on the back foot, whilst having the power to push him back as well. Absolutely freak of nature.

the 2 men who have beaten him are mayweather and pacquaio , 2 of the best in recent history , thats no shame

wish some of our other fighters would fight the best and take much more chances

Ye he was brave in taking the fights and was a great world champ at the LWW division he got lots of people intrested in boxing so what he lost to the best fighters out there he was good not great

I felt some sadness for him despite my criticisms over the years but not too much, as I'd happily get layed out for £12million too. A boxer's career isn't just about beating the stuffing out of another man, its about taking your own licks into the bargain and when they come they hurt

Yes Pacquaio and Mayweather exposed his defensive weaknesses and wide lunging punching, but I and many thought Kostya Tyszu would expose these weaknesses and he couldn't because Hatton's boxing ability, speed, strength are all world class, just not in the league of Pacman and FMJ. I do wonder if Hatton and/or his camp always new the faster slicker fighters would give him nightmares

All our top boxers get an unjustified slating on here when they lose, the "I told you so'" brigade and the "he should retire" idiots come to the fore. It happened to Amir, Audley, Junior, AAA..... and now it's happened to Hatton. Haye and Froch will also get the same "he's overrated' treatment when they next lose

I'm no Hatton fan (since his Witter avoidance), but people do tend to go over the top, especially considering that his recent destruction came at the hands of the P4P#1 and a truly exceptional fighter who'll live at the upper end of the HOF.

As PN said I don't feel sorry for Hatton though, because he's just earned a ridiculous amount of money. Where as old ginger bollocks here has to slave away in front of a PC 8 hours a day. Hatton should feel sorry for us poorly paid workers if anything

credit has to go to Ricky for getting to the level he has and the main problem with the hate seems over exposure. I have always followed Hatton since seeing him win quite early on in his career but always knew he was exciting but flawed. I to also though Tsyzu would be the one to expose him but i guess he just timed (allegedly Timed) that fight just right. good luck to the guy if he retires as he has given us some great nights of boxing. i wont miss the fools & Horses, in the Third person references, bad jokes and talk of P4p but i will miss the excitment he brought to the sport.
I don't think Hatton actually gets enough credit for the Tyszu fight and Hatton may have always beaten him. Believe me being a Witter fan I didn't want to give him any credit at the time so your getting a none biased assessment. The truth probably lies somewhere between 'he was a past it 3round fighter' and 'he was the same as prime'

Tyszu was always defensively open, always took a punch to land a punch, always had slower handspeed and always fought at a slower pace than Hatton and probably never would have been happy with the tiring infighting Hatton brought to the table. Could a somewhat faster Tyszu with better stamina beat Hatton? Perhaps

Why would I feel sorry for him?

Its Boxing. At least now he knows he does not belong at the elite level.

BIGMARK wrote:i dont like giving Ricky a hard time because IMO he has been good for British Boxing and i have always been on his side wanting him to win. However i felt really let down last weekend and as i said on another thread because "he fought like a four round novice" and let a lot of people down including himself. Yes he has lost only to the elite fighters but to go out like he did against Pacman had shades of Khan against Prescott and for me will always leave me feeling disappionted.
i can understand some of the stick hatton has got.

saturday night wasn't good.

but as i said in another post.

old agenda's are coming out as per usual.

nothing was worse than khan-prescott was it.

least hatton got himself back into it a bit before getting blasted. :o

I would have felt more sorry for Hatton if he hadnt said all this best ever stuff before the fight.
He had thousands of fans and still had to give it all the twoddle.
He could have just said Pacs the best in the world but im going in to take it from him.
Would you feel sorry for Pac flattened??
Probably not.

I feel sorry for any fighter knocked stiff and turned on their side so as not to swallow their tongue.

He has been a fantastic advert for British boxing for a good few years now, I feel this has led to the jealousy and to the harsh critism towards him by the predictable posters on this site

He talked big and put it on the line against some of the really biggest names at and around his division, sure he lost to the truly outstanding ones .. so what? what other British boxer of the last 10-20yrs has gone out to America seeking to fight the top guys at their peak? there haven`t been many have there

But I now think its time for him to retire, his reputation can only be diminished if he carries on, he has earn`t enough respect and money along the way, and it does look as if there is noticable wear and tear showing in his punch resistance.

Ok, he was paid £10M on Saturday.

He is ok and has his health.

He has his health and thats the most important thing.

Mate, I think ANY fighter would fight the top boys for the money on offer.

Lennox fouht those with the guts to fight him.

Froch is doing it now.

Hatton did not fight the best to get to PBF and Pac... That's the problem.

Its about opportunities, he gets them because he makes the money for fighters.

I am sure ANY of the top Lt Welters would fight Pacman and PBF but PBF wants big money that only a Hatton can generate -

I think Pacman would fight anyone though.

If Cotto or SSM was P4P number 1 Hatton would not fight them, imo.

I have to agree DG. Sure he lost to the two best fighters out there, but they were comprehensive defeats that both suggeseted he didnt belong in that class. Its the fights in between that are the problem. His marketability has a lot to do with taking the big fights.

You can bet your house that he wouldn't have stepped up to fight SSM if he was P4P Number 1.

I will never dismiss the Tyszu win. Fantastic for british boxing and a GREAT win. But that was his peak, and he couldn't sustain it, great boxers do.

I really felt for Hatton on saturday and was worried, and am pleased that he is OK.

He started to believe his own hype and it was sad to see him KO'd like that. I hope he retires, he has been brilliant for boxing.

I felt really sorry for Ricky, even more-so when he was out-cold. My sadness turned to concern for a little bit aswell!

Its not nice, no matter what profession it is, to see someone put so much effort into what they believe in, only for the end result to against what they had hoped for!

In the case of Ricky, disliking the man is one thing, but revelling in him coming up short is quite different & uncalled for imo! I'm a Hatton fan & always have been. I'm also a Pacquiao fan & the better man won, plain & simple!

This country always seems to revel in someone's downfall or their failures! Its a diagreace! If Pacquiao had lost on saturday, do you think his supporters back home would gloat in him losing? Not a chance! He would still be a hero & an inspiration to them all!

One thing you have to remember is that not EVERYONE back home loves Manny, it stands to reason, he has 80 body guards and 24 hour round the clock protection.

A lot of it is because he is loved, but with love also comes hate.

I was worried for Hatton also, but if anything good has come from this it might be the realisation that he is not elite and should not risk his health against the best fighters out there.

TBH I felt more sorry for his girlfriend who was ringside. Yes I know some of you think if she cant hack it she shouldnt be there but its her bf and she wanted to show him her support it cant be easy watching a loved one fight never mind ko'd like hatton was.

As for Hatton himself I dont feel sorry for him, dont get me wrong I was concerned for his health when he was on the canvas. But at the end of the day thats the chance you take when you sign up for these big money fights. Maybe if he'd have stuck to his game plan he might have gone a few more rounds.
