Anyone remeber Colin Jones the welterweight boxer who fought Milton McCory and Don Curry in the 1980's?

He trained at the boxing shed behind my back garden...........................

Colin Jones had Eddie Thomas behind him. Eddie was a man who never bowed to the Cartel and was brilliant in a corner (think of Ken Buchanan).
Much of Colin's (and Ken's) success is down to Eddie.

Wasn't he was part of the might Merthyr boxing club that produced Winstone and Owen. Did he managed Owen as well? Or try to. I forget.

I think he beat Kirkland Lang twice.....if i remember right

Yeah - he managed Johnny Owen - who died in the ring sadly.

Colin Jones use to split his training at the boxing shed behind my garden which he trained at since he was 9 years old and when he turned pro he use to train up in Merthyr in Eddie Thomas pro gym and get decent sparring, etc - but also still train at the boxing shed behind my garden too.

Yes i remember colin jones,watching him against McCrory first got me interested in boxing. He stopped laing twice,both times in the 9th round when well behind on points,good skills,good chin and very good power,believe he used to be a grave digger if i remember right.Later on he had the misfortune to meet a peak Donald Curry and almost had his nose cut off,it was one of the worst cuts i have ever seen in boxing,great fighter and a nice man too.

Spot on. KO'd Laing twice. In round 9 on both occasions, I think. Also fought twice for the world welterweight title. Jones has to be one of the best fighters never to win a world title. A tremendous puncher too.

Actually didn't he fight 3 times for the title.

Jones will go down as one of the best britains never to win a title, but too limited to be classed as one of the best in the world never to win a world title.

How Honeyghun vs Jones never happend I don't know.

I thought Dai Gardner managed Owen?

I thought Eddie Thomas was invovled with Johnny Owen in some capcity - trainer or manager

Dai Gardiner was definately involved with Owen. I actually thought he was trainer AND manager.

Eddie Thomas was the guy who used to tell fighters to pour piss on their face to stop cuts.

Dad remains convinced to this day, that Jones would have had Curry. Alot of Welshmen think that, personally I think Curry looked in bang on form and always going to be too good... but one thing, Curry wasn't hurting Jones - and Jones might, just might, have got the bingo punch.

There was story going round some years back that Colin Jones had a run in with Richard Moriarty, the former Wales 2nd row. All 6ft 5 and 18 odd stone of him. Story goes that Colin laid him out with one punch. Not sure if its true but a good story nontheless.

As has been said there was like a foot and 8 stone difference between them

Yep, and if you went up to watch Llanelli play Swansea when Moriaty was playing... often hear "Colin Jones, Colin Jones, Colin Jones" to the tune of "Here we go"!.

Yes I know this story - and I think it is true - it was reported in Boxing News at the time apparantely.

But one thing I would like to know is - why did Moriaty bang into Colins missus - what point was he trying to prove by disrespecting someones missus on purpose = why was he being such a twat?

I disagree with that though.

Just thought Curry was fighting a very good techical fight - very cautious - knew he could not afford to get sloppy like Kirkland Laing - and could have won the fight on points - even if it dragged the whole 15 rounds.

Eddie Thomas once said no fighter should go in a pub because they might be sipping a orange juice but people will see them in the pub and go around saying he was in the pub boozing

The great Winstone, yes. Dai Gardiner managed Johnny Owen.

Yeah, the cut gave him no chance to show what he could do. Curry looked great but it was Khan-Barrera all over again. The cut 'killed' the fight.

Was Curry a 15 round fighter though with the weight making problems? I agree with you and even think he would have eventually stopped Jones (even if it was a compationate stoppage) he was taking lots of shots.... but there is that "if" there.
