Ricky Hatton's father has said that his son's preparations for his fight with Manny Pacquiao were so chaotic he should have withdrawn from the contest.

Hatton was knocked out by the Filipino in round two their Las Vegas contest, with rumours of unrest within the Mancunian's training camp leading up to the fight.

They centred around a deteriorating relationship with trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr whom, it was reported, consistently arrived late for training and failed to turn up on the night of the fight itself until Hatton was having his hands bandaged.

Now Ray Hatton has told Setanta Sports he believes that, with hindsight, his son should not have climbed into the ring with Pacquiao at all.

"It could have been a lot, lot better - massively better. I'm very disappointed with some of the things that I heard," he said.

"I'm also very disappointed in some of the things I personally saw. I had reservations early on. It wasn't ideal by any means.

"I'm not making excuses about the performance because I wouldn't do that but I think the fans know Ricky Hatton and they know what we're all about.

"In hindsight, if the truth be known, he probably would have been as well making this the first fight he had pulled out of."

Fan loyalty
Hatton Sr insisted the only reason his son fought was out of loyalty to his fans, of whom an estimated 10,000 travelled to Nevada.

"Ricky's had 47 fights and when has anybody had their money back because the fight's been called off?" he added.

"That shows what Ricky's all about. He's never pulled out of a fight, never disappointed the fans.

"But, when you've got people travelling thousands of miles, you've got to think of them. It doesn't take anything away from Manny.

"He's a great, great fighter but, for me, personally, that wasn't my son in that ring."


Sounds like a list of excuses to me. Also judging from this it looks like he wants Ricky to continue? Good ol Rick, 'doing it for the fans'

I wonder if Floyd Mayweather turning up late would have been mentioned if Ricky had actually won the fight?

Team Hatton just need to accept that Ricky got slaughtered by the better man; a future ATG in the making.

Ricky is not in Manny´s league & he must realise that now.

Not going to comment on the excuses, because it's the usual thing to expect to hear after a fighter has lost.

However, that is a fair comment about Hatton never pulling out of a fight - I can't recall that ever happening.

If fights got called off when there was
a little bust up there wouldn't be any
fights taking place.
Illness or injuries postpone fights, not arguements.
Last time it was joe cortez who wouldn't let him do
his usuall holding and hitting tacticts to beat mayweather
and now more excuses.

It's become a farce because in truth, they are now starting to contradict each other.
If Ray is correct - why no such comment from Lee Beard for example.

This could have all been avoided at the outset if Ricky had come out, given Manny the big licks, then sorted out the internal issues behind closed doors.
Instead, what did he do ?
Have a poolside party, and refuse to speak.
The whole camp's PR of late has been a disaster.
We have a saying, me and the mates, when we're away with the boxing.
What happens on the mile, stays on the mile - from the film, The Green Mile.
Even jobbing boxers adopt this, when it comes to what has happened in the gym, particularly sparring.
The whole set up and the individuals involved need to take a rain check.
Maybe, and sadly, the lot of them have got too big for their own boots.
This reminds me so much of the Naseem Hamed story, it's spooky.

First time around it was the referee, this time it was the training camp. Why not just admit the truth.

He was beaten by guys who were clearly better than him, both times.

If you cannot get a camp right for such a fight, then what hope is there??? The biggest fight of his career (arguably) and they claim that they messed up so much in the build up that he should have been pulled out??

there's no doubt in my mind that if Floyd Senior had got there 15 minutes earlier Ricky would have at worst lost on points. You'd have to be plain nuts not to think that.................yeah right!
