Roy Jones vs Clinton Woods II - Anyone know anything ?

Apparently a fight between Roy Jones and Clinton Woods is being set up........

Has anyone else heard this or has any information ? I got the news off another boxing site

Sounds like it could be true, but Clinton's promoter Dennis Hobson has said recently that Clinton could be getting a shot at one of the light-heavyweight titles, because Hobson felt that whoever won the Tarver - Dawson fight, either of them would vacate the belt, leaving it open for Clinton and another fighter.

Anyone heard anything ?

RJJ stated before the Sheika fight that he wanted Clinton in an IBF fight. Spud would be best placed.

Twas on itv teletext the other day. According to the report I read, Hobson needs to get the deal sorted by the end of the week, or it probably won't happen. If it does go ahead, the fight is likely to take place in Sheffield.

Article is very short, but here...

That could be it then Emerson.....

Interesting fight if it came off and i wonder if it would be in Sheffield or Florida ? Not too sure how the box office was for Jones' fight with Sheika, so there is a possibility it could be in this country, because it would be an impossible sell in America.

Thanks for that Chris,

It would be my only chance of meeting Roy Jones, so i hope it comes off, but i doubt it somehow. I wonder why the deal has to be done so quickly ? Maybe they are trying to back Woods and Hobson into a corner, regards the purse.....

If it's in the UK, I'd probably go.

Were definately miserable twats Autobarn :DD

In all fairness to Clinton, i think he is still ambitious to get the title back and rectify what was a pretty dire performance against Tarver, but i think it's a fair point in reference to Jones. It's a last chance saloon fight for both fighters, especially Woods, because Jones still has something of a name to trade upon.

Is Dawson certain to vacate? He's already vacated the WBC, if he vacates the IBF I don't know where that would leave him with no big names other than Hopkins at light heavy, Erdei wouldn't go near him...the only one left would be the WBA champ Garay, but I wouldn't see the point in him vacating one title to go for another when the belt holder is a no name.

I see your point....

I'm not even sure why Dawson has relinquished the WBC belt, does it have something to do with the time span of making a madatory defence or the opponent ? Hopkins has said himself, that Dawson's people have approached him about making a fight, so maybe Dawson is set to face Hopkins down the line.

Dawson vacated because his mandatory - Diaconu (not sure of the spelling) won purse bids for the fight to take place in Romania and he didn't want to know...if the Hopkins fight doesn't come off then Dawson is in no mans land.

I can understand Dawson not wanting to take that fight with Diaconu. Home bias and a not significant payday either i would imagine, where as Hopkins is a guaranteed payday. Hopkins was talking about a Pavlik re-match, Dawson or even Carl Froch, but i think he would school Dawson and beat him on points, so it's a very risky strategy for Dawson.

In all honesty Mark, i don't think that Clinton has all that much left in the tank. He has always struggled at the very top level and his defeat to an ageing Tarver showed up his true credentials. Woods can only fight one way, similar to Hatton, lacks technical ability and beyond the European level, he is essentaiily out of his depth and going in to dangerous territory. In reality, any fighter with quick hands wiLL give Clinton Woods nightmares and i don't see him reclaiming any title. His best days were the Johnson fights.

Just spoke to Dennis (Thu 14 May 09):

There are 2 or 3 viable options being pursued for Clinton at this present time - time is being taken over his next fight due to it being vital as it is probably Clinton's last shot at the World scence.

The RJJ is definitely one avenue being explored but to be honest it is no closer than the other 2 options being looked at.

Dennis has stated he expects Clinton to fight again in September or October and it will be a BIG fight.

When asked whether this fight would be in the UK - Dennis stated if TV was forthcoming ideally yes but as with Carl Froch - Clinton is more than prepared to travel to secure his opportunity - but in all honesty the real problem is securing TV revenue to entice a big name to the UK - there has been some promising moves on this situation in the last few days.

The above is the only things to be stated at this stage.

Another thing:

There is a definite rumour circulating that Chad Dawson is seriously considering vacating.

Am I the only one who thinks this fight shouldn't happen, predominantly because of how Jones schooled Woods in 2002. That was a supreme Jones and it doesn't seem right that Woods should have the chance to avenge that defeat by fighting a far inferior version of a modern legend, especially considering it's for a world title.

This is by no means a criticism of Woods as I like him as a fighter, he's had a great career and is still competitive in his late 30s. I just wish any fight - in particular a world title fight - would be against someone other than Jones out of respect for the fighter he once was, even if it is Jones that wants the fight too.

I think you're being slightly harsh on Clinton there - I figure he was better than European level but outclassed by the very best (even, in Tarver's case, the shells of their best selves) and a p;oor traveller. To my mind anyone who beat Glen Johnson (and was competitive against him twice more) has to be a bit useful.

Fail to see how Roy Jones v Clinton Woods helps either fighter CASH OUT, Ricky Hatton couldn't sell out in Sheffield and Roy Jones will barely feed his hens with the cash from this bout.

Roy: I want the fight

IBF: We'll make it a title fight.

TV: Yep, we'll take that.

Promoters: Here's a stack of cash.

Fans: Whoopee! Roy Jones in the UK! Where do I buy my ticket?

Clinton: Sorry, I won't take this fight out of respect for Roy.

Does that scenario look even remotely plausible?

Of course a win over Jones now is not exactly avenging what happened in 2002, but the bottom line is, Jones is still a top 10 fghter at the weight and as such it would still be meaningful in the present climate. Not to mention a good payday.

I am possibly being a bit harsh and your right, Clinton is more than just a European level fighter and i accept your point about him not being a good traveller. It's noteworthy that his best win, against Johnson, was in his home city of Sheffield. I just think that the Tarver defeat took a lot out of clinton, confidence wise and he is not getting any younger. He fights in a predictable fashion and i think that most of the top light heavyweights would have his number, cetainly Dawson, Jones, Tarver, Hopkins and i think he would even struggle with the likes of Erdei, Cloud and Green, which would'nt have been the case three or four years ago. Clinton has stretched his capabilities way beyond his technical limitations and it's credit to him that he reached the level of world champion, but i think he is now slightly over the hill and whilst i can't see a defeat in devastating fashion, i believe that he will be picked off by any of the current top light heavyweights, once he steps back up in class from his last fight.

??

I really do not understand your post - the position has been explained - money right now and TV are 2 BIG issues - once they are sorted - firm plans can be put in place.

Clinton Woods is one of those fighters who will fight whoever and I mean whoever is put in front of him if it means a world title shot - he leaves the politics, bullsh*t and the smokescreens to the promoters and TV companies.

I also see the comments concerning Clinton in recent performances - personally and yep I am biaised - Clinton performed excellently against Muriqi and seems refreshed and ready to go again under new trainer Glyn Rhodes - there is no disrespect to Richard Poxon who did excellent for Clinton but under Rhodes - Clinton is back to his normal self again!!!

Hopkins, Dawson, Erdei, Garay, Tarver, Johnson, Diaconu, Cloud, Woods, Green.
