On Thursday Ring Legends Floyd Mayweather & Juan Manuel Marquez completed there press tour with the final leg held London. The Press conference took place in opulent splendour at the 5 star luxurious Landmark Hotel, Marylebone.
Both fighters arrived on a red double Decker bus and posed for photos before heading inside.
It was announced firstly that chief support bout would be between Matthew Hatton & Zab Judah. Hatton was on hand to say a few words “Many people will regard me as a big underdog in this fight, but I don’t step in the ring with anyone who I don’t believe I can beat. I know I have to lift my game to another level for this fight, but as Lee (Beard, Hatton’s trainer) will tell you I can lift my game a few levels. I’m a vastly improved fighter & I’m confident of winning this fight”
It was then time for Marquez who was cordially introduced after showing a brief video of some of the highlights of his career. Next came Mayweather who entered the fray. Again following a video of some of his career highlights. Both guys posed together once more for photo’s before taking there seats.
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer took to the dais. He started by talking about Marquez saying he asked Juan Diaz what happened in his fight with Marquez to which Diaz replied “He was so precise with his punches”. He really is the best technician in boxing today. He is a legend in Mexico and has a 160 million people behind him. Marquez stepped up and spoke for a short while “Everybody knows I have a tough challenge. This fight is in at a new weight for me & I will fight with the best fighter in the world. I will prepare myself very hard because I know I can do it, I will do it. I want to be the best and need to fight with the best”
Then Schaefer introduced Mayweather saying he had grossed over quarter of a Billion dollars at PPV’s in his previous two fights around which runs to 3.4 Million American viewers alone. The one man franchise, yes he’s flashy, yes he’s brash, yes he has a lot of money and he doesn’t mind showing it. His cars, his mansion’s, his private planes. He does talk the talk but he does walk the walk.
Before Mayweather spoke his right hand man and CEO of Mayweather promotions Leonard Ellerbe took stage thanking everyone for the opportunity and saying how great it was to be back.
He then passed on to let Floyd’s trainer and Uncle Roger Mayweather take centre stage. Ever the character Roger said “It’s going to be a big event, my nephew is coming back to prove that when he left boxing as the number one fighter in the world and he’s going to prove that once again he’s the best fighter in the world”. He then asked “How many titles did you win was it four or five? Maybe six (Looking at Schaefer) but didn’t you say it was seven but it could of been 8 or 9″ to which the audience roared with laughter.
Ellerbe finally introduced Mayweather who thanked many people for there roles in making the fight and his comeback happen. He was then quick to defend his father who for the last few weeks had been at the wrath of many people through out Boxing for his role in Ricky Hatton’s recent defeat. “That wasn’t my father’s game plan, he tells fighters to go out there and be smart, be intelligent and box, I must take the heat of my father because I know what kind of trainer he is and what kind of trainer my uncle Roger is. If you go with my Uncle Roger or you go with my dad you go with the best”
He went on to thank his team for the part in his career whether it be getting up through out the night to train him or making various calls and adjustments to any potential problems leaving him free to do what he does best train.
He got to Pacquiao saying he’s not thinking of Pacquiao he’s focused on Marquez. “I truly believe in my heart that Marquez beat Pacquiao twice”
Mayweather then explained why he is like is he “If I wasn’t trash talking or flashy, flamboyant then I wouldn’t be the biggest guy in the sport of Boxing”
A respectful Mayweather went on “Mexico has many great fighters. I’m not over looking him. All our training camps go well”
“Everybody is judging Pacquiao on his last few fights well do the same with Marquez. He’s beaten Barrera. Out of the 24 rounds they fought Marquez won more rounds (on the score cards) he got up from 4 knockdowns. Come July 18th the best man will win and I believe that will be me”
Geez Boxing’s dying? Really they’ve said that for the last hundred years. If a one fighter is capable of doing that sort of business makes you wonder what would happen if the sport was doing well.
