What a warrior was the Cat.

He was a warrior indeed, and in certain fights like Haye, Rothmann etc he was the master of pretending to be knackered/seriously hurt, then luring his opponent in to drop their guard and be cocky and then BANG, bingo punch time.

The CAT is an absolute legend, been upsetting home fighters for years, was brought in to get beat up by Nicky Piper, come from behind victories on foreign soil, That Dunstan victory was devastating as was Rothman, still can't believe he was stopped early in the Nelson fight.
As he has constantly proved throughout his career, he come from behind, he need to be nailed to the canvas and has often pulled out concussive KO victories late on

Dont know about the Cat, but The Dogs Bollocks Yes. Great Guy too.

I remember this show, I think we had about 14 or 15 fights on it, in peterborough,, I had to set up a video camera at the entrance so everybody who entered could be filmed incase it went off!!

I first met Carl when the late Phil Martin brought him down from Manchester to box on a duff -barrett dinner show, he boxed Tenko Ernie, how time flies!!!!!!!

Carl deserved a rematch with Johnny Nelson.

I tried to get this fight from the ITV archive for the show back in October when Dunstan fought.
It's lost - I did the commentary on the mad night. It was part of a regional ITV attempt to get back into boxing which included the second greatest boxing show in TV history - the much loved Boxing First.
On Boxing First bums like Mosley, Jones, Reid, Mayweather, Barrera, Morales, Tapia and Vargas had entire fights broadcast every two weeks for about a year.
Sadly, ITV's digital football deal went tits up and the show was scrapped the next day. Bosh, gone! A tragedy.
Fine days but not a patch on Setanta's output now.

Carl was an immensly brave fighter and tough as old boots. I remember watching open mouthed as he came back and knocked out Rothman at the Ponds Forge leisure centre.Heck of a fight.

With all this being said, he was getting schooled by Jonny, and could'nt hit him with a handful of rice, and no way would johnny ever have fallen into Carl's trap of playing hurt and tired.The ref saved him from a hiding + he avoided fighting Johnny for years before they did box.

thompson was getting schooled and hrt by nelson. but yu'd think a guy with thompson's reputation would have been given a chance to get through it. it's not like nelson would be able to sustain that kind of power punching. but thompson was taking flush shots all night, landed little of consequence and ultimately it goes down as a one sided fight.

nelson was hot that night, but many of his subsequent title fights were appalling, damn near unwatchable. despite his skills he showed a massive reticence to trade punches; often he wouldn't even throw shots that were going to land if there was a chance of being countered. he did a good defence against dominguez and another good one against rudiger may.

thompson might have got a rematch if sellers hadn't knocked him out in that crazy war, right?

Carl was British and European thaiboxing champion before turning to boxing but fought as Adrian Thompson,Like Skelton nobody was really sure of his age but what a warrior.
There were quiute a few good class thai boxers from the Manchester area that switched to pro boxing back then.

When you are an established champion you deserve the chance to turn the fight around after you have been outboxed for four rounds, it's not like he was beat up, this is pro boxing for christs sake

If Thompson can come back from a bashing from David Haye, he can come back from Johnny Nelson's shots. The fight was held in Derby, where Paul Thomas (the ref) lives. I thought (for no particular reason) that a referee who lived elsewhere should have got the job.

When youare getting hit at will and hard, dropped and land nothing back you can't be too dissapointed when the ref stops the fight on you + Haye has not quite the reflexes that Johnny had, so it would have got worse for Carl not better.

yeah thats it pal im sure, i remember watching jones vs richard hall, david telesco and mosley vs adrian stone, etc must of bin around 10 years ago!!

It just depends on what would have happened next. Would Thompson have started going down, falling even further behind. Landing hardly anything at all and getting even more hurt.

Or would Nelson have started getting tired, allowing Thompson into it?

Shame the ref never let us find out. I have a feeling Nelson would have tired, but that Thompson would have had big problems getting through his defence and Carl would have likely lost wide on points.

Definitely a difference between Haye and Nelson's power, but Haye has never been hard to hit whereas Nelson took very few clean shots in the mature part of his career.

luckily i have a lot of carls fights recorded including against dunstan and always enjoying watching him. i honestly dont think he would have beaten johnny nelson in a million years
