I'm looking for a new trainer now but I don't know where to start. I don't rate any of the trainers in Manchester. I've been around the gyms and the fighters here don't seem to know what they're doing technically. Actually, Brian Hughes is a good technical coach but he's in his 70s. I went to Bobby Rimmer's gym and it was all work, work, work. I've got to be shown technique.

the way peter fought in his last 2 fights i dont see why tyson wouldnt win

Still I think he's got a point, boxing is not just about being as fit and throwing as many punches as possible.
A lot of British trainers do lack tactical and technique awareness even though they woudnt admit it.
that's just my opinion.

The way Peter fought in his last 2 fights I don't see why my Nan wouldn't win. And she's dead.

Fury's not got the stamina yet, he was blowing in the second round against Belshaw and that was a one sided fight.
Tyson might win the first few rounds against the likes of Peter or McCall but they would brake him down quite easily in the middle rounds at this stage in his career.

Fury is confident and may overrate himself, but that interview gave me the impression he has brains. The way he talked about why he perfectly understood why Chisora would want Williams first , and the last part about understanding that he hasn't to get ahead of himself, were two bits of pretty astute analysis.

He definitely knows his stuff. When we were talking about McCall he knew about his son Elijah's pro career and Bruce Seldon too. He's no fool.

I was thinking the opposite, that he's not very clever.
If he was clever he'd know how to be endearing.

Now, the reason I originally rang was to ask you to sum up your heavyweight rivals but first I have to ask: all these press releases with you criticising other fighters, does it bother you when you are called "disrespectful"?

Not at all. I'm a confident fighter. When people see me coming to the ring really relaxed they think 'I'm in trouble here'.

When I listen to Tyson Fury, I do like him, I like his confidence and attitude. I think Hennessy press releases and his dad get him unfair stick, but on the otherhand they keep his profile high which must be a good thing.
I have no problem with him looking for a technical coach, it can only be a good thing, but this cannot be at the expense of the work ethic. It would be criminal to see Fury not make it because he is not doing the graft in the gym. He needs a trainer to be the boss in the gym and to bully him a bit, instead of having a family cheerleading squad.
What Fury has done in the ring so far has been impressive though, his conditioning and performances have consistenly improved so there has been a lot of good work done, I just want to see that carry on because all the real hard work is yet to be done.

Excellent interview. I can't help but like Tyson Fury, he talks the talk and I reckon he'll walk the walk. He's definately the pick of the UK HW prospects IMO

maybe a move to america would suit him.I think a lot of british fighters should go down this route.Its a fact that better sparring will vastly improve a boxer

Flex - without wishing to sound like Bennie, there are a couple of typos in there which do detract from the enjoyment of reading.

The real question is though, why on Earth is there a holiday camp in Manchester?

No you would'nt Tyson.......!!

You would get to five rounds, even if you made it that far and then begin to tire badly and get stopped.

I like Tyson, but he should really stop listening to his Dad........

You no what he aint far wrong by saying the only manchester trainer who knows about the technicle aspects of boxing training is Brian Hughes, in fact he is bang on the money. The only ones who may have an argument is oliver harrison and to my embarrasment cannot remember his name, the trainer who trains David Barnes

Bob Shannon. Just spoke to him funnily enough. He felt Fury should make sure he's visited all the gyms before he passes judgement. Bob said he puts a lot of emphasis on slipping and trying out new moves. He's had a lot of bad luck, with Barnes' inactivity, Nuumbembe going back to Namibia and Kev Anderson taking a break. I feel for him coz he's a top trainer and a top feller.

i agree with him! UK coaches r all bout conditioning nowadays. they dont know everything.

i'd like to see manny steward get hold of him, he does well with tall fighters (and heavys)

i dont think there r many good youn trainers coming thru, all these ex pros and former kickboxers opening gyms like oliver harrison, farnell, fearon etc..

UK used to have some great trainers like jimmy tibbs, brian hughes, howard rainey, kevin saunders..they r a dieing breed.

I cant believe how much credit enzo calzaghe and jim mcdonnell get, they r just conditioners really. enzo knows fornicate all bout boxing.

McCracken shows potential but doesnt teach much in the way of defence.

I have been impressed by Richie Woodhall, his old man Len is a class act too

I'd try and get him training with one of the Klitschko , when they are preparing for a title fight. See how a world champion goes about things.
