Yesterday at the Wild Card Gym, I met a husband and wife photography team, Jim and Cindy Lommason.

They’re putting together a book about boxing gyms in the U.S. They showed me a rough of what they’ve done so far, and it’s very stylish and gritty. It will not only include photos but stories about people who’ve trained in the gym and anything colorful.

They already have a publisher, Stone Creek, and it will be released in the fall of 2004

Since they can’t possibly visit every gym in the U.S., if you can make some recommendations about gyms that might hold some special interest, I will pass it along to them, and you may be instrumental in having your suggestion in the book.

The best Gym I know (character wise) is Trevor Schofields in Barnsley. It was built originally as a coaching stable I guess sometime in the 1700s. But it has been used as a gym for over 100 years and hasn't been changed since the 1920's. I had a rumage through one of the cupboards once and found some handbills from the 1950'sand some blank BBBC contract forms from the 1940s.
It's all saw dust and ancient leather bags but has a real magic about it. For the Brits it used to be Brian Glover (of Kes) father's gym.

The Barnsley gym sounds ideal in every way, but I think what they mentioned was:It was only gyms in the U.S.

They may expand their horizons as they do this--and I'll certainly pass this along.

I just got a cellphone call from both of them and the're headed for Northern Califonia, so if you have any suggestions in Northern California, Oakland & Sacramento, please get'm to me ASAP and I'll pass'em along.

Singers Gym in Buffalo, NY was the place from 1920-1980's. All the Buffalo Champs trained there. Many other champions too. Dempsey, Louis, and others that came through Buffalo trained there.

On the same subject I am looking for pictures of gyms and also venues of boxing in Britain, plus is anyone can scan or photocopy Handbills or front covers of Programmes that would be great
