The Daily Telegraph can exclusively reveal that Meehan is poised to be rushed into the title fight that was originally supposed to see dual WBA title holders Nikolay Valuev and Ruslan Chagaev finally split the belt.

But with Chagaev sensationally withdrawing after contracting hepatitis, the Central Coast construction worker has been catapulted into top billing for the fight in Finland today.

"Everything looks set to go; we are just in the final stages of negotiations," Meehan's manager George Christodoulou said before flying out of Sydney.

"There was talk Lamon Brewster may take the fight. Someone else said Evander Holyfield was flying over. But we are confident Kali will be fighting for the title.

"He sees this as his destiny. He's quietly confident, relaxed and wants to bring the heavyweight title home to Australia.

"This is going to be massive, they're talking about 100 million people watching worldwide."

A boxer whose story plays out to the Rocky soundtrack, Meehan was already in Helsinki after agreeing to fight American Cerrone Fox on the undercard of the Valuev-Chagaev stoush.

Instead, he now he faces Valujev, the hulking Russian who is 17cm taller than Willie Mason, eats 3kg of red meat a day and boasts of once killing a wild boar with his bare hands.

Meehan, too, is not without a yarn after being all set for a life on an Auckland prawn trawler when his mate rang offering "a fight at some party place called Surfers Paradise".

History shows Meehan headed across the Tasman, knocked his rival out in five and has since moved furniture, bounced on nightclub doors, worked security, played park footy and dug holes to survive.

Even today his trainer is based in Queensland. He works out of a gym in his garage. This father of three rising out of bed at four every morning to run between eight and 16km before grabbing his hard hat and shovel.

Going into his world title without even a major sponsor.

Meehan first captured the attention of Aussie fight fans back in 2004 when he lost a controversial points decision to then WBA champion Lamon Brewster - a decision so controversial even Brewster's old man said his son "should give the belt to that Aussie next door".

The Coastie has since fought everywhere from Wyong RSL to Madison Square Garden, with a new chapter set to be written in Finland today.

Main Event still has it on their schedule, but according to the Boxrec schedule the whole program is off.

The Ruiz gang is trying to get their boy a shot.

Hepatitis? What kind of conditions does Chagaev live in?

if meehan was offered a chance to step in he should have taken it as he would have had some fight fitness because he was doing an eight rounder and now he might never get another chance at a world title.

It was not up to him. The promoters called the card off because any other fight than Valuev/Chagaev would not be what the ticket buyers paid for. If Chagaev has Hep "B" it pretty much finishes him. Meehan should get the next shot at Valuev anyway.

How on earth did Chagaev get Hepatitis B? Don't they have a vaccination program in Germany?

I see Meehan was a bouncer on the door of NZ nightclubs.
Wonder if he was one of the one`s Gary Gurr used to knock out for practice? {like he told us} :o

Meehan has lived in Australia for a long time. He has done security work but he would have Gurr for lunch.

Gurr could not reach Williams' jaw and Kali is about 2 inches taller than Sonny.

Yeah I agree mate, my post was tongue in cheek.
On a serious side, I don`t know what to make of 2 HW challenges from Oz for World Titles in a week.!
It`s unheard of.
Is this latest bloke a bit more fair dinkum than Hoppa?
Is it a recognised and respected title he would be getting in there for?

Mate if it's HEP B. his career is over, there's no cure, and no coming back from that.

Rather sad, i would have liked to have seen what Chagaev could accomplish in the heavyweight scene.

warnambool , hoppa should have never fought Oliver McCall one of the best in the USA before he fought the best here in OZ like Alex Leapai ,Michael Kirby,Peter Cronje and rematched Ben Edwards.
hoppas just in it for the money and now the world think OZ has no heavyweights because hoppa beat an old Bob Mirovic to win the OZ title.

Kali Meehan is trying to fight for a real world title but sometimes he runs hot and cold just hope he runs hot if he gets a shot because of his international experience.

Henry Akinwande, Ray Mercer and Michael Grant all did.
