I think that the bbc feels that boxing does'nt meet there "ethical" code, with regard to programme making or broadcasting. The bbc is packed full of liberal, politically correct journalists, programe makers and managers, who feel that their target audience is'nt a bunch of lager fuelled idiots braying at a boxing match, which is how they view and stereo-type all boxing fans. The bbc has not produced anything significant, besides the olympics, since the days when it showed the early careers of David Haye, Carl Froch and a few others. No doubt investing in Audley Harrison has put them off considerably, because since his contract came to an end, boxing has not figured as a prime time sport on the bbc at all, unless you take into consideration the re-runs of the Calzaghe vs Hopkins and Calzaghe vs Jones Jr fights.

The bbc could choose to put more funding into boxing, but has recently paid out a small fortune in gaining the rights to Formula One and with it's other commitments in sports broadcasting, such as football, snooker, tennis, darts, rugby, horse racing etc, it is effectively leaving boxing, certainly at the premium level, to Setanta and Sky Sports, because it can't compete financially or justify the figures involved. The bbc could do the same job as itv4 are doing at the moment, in showing domestic fights and showing the progress of newcomers to the sport, such as Tyson Fury, and James DeGale etc, but obviously views the British domestic scene as futile and not high profile enough. This is a complete turn around from the 1970's and 1980's when the bbc was noted for the its's boxing coverage, with the sublime Harry Carpenter at it's healm. Those were the days of three channels and the satellite companies have come into the market place since then, but the bbc should still have a slice of that market and indeed has a duty to it's paying public to offer some form of sports broadcasting that involves professional boxing, as opposed to just showing amateur boxing at the ABA championships or at the Olympics games.

The bbc has a mandate to show sports that are not considered mainstream and boxing, particularly the domestic scene, flirts within those boundaries and so regardless of of viewing figures, it should make an effort to stick to it's own guidelines and show boxing shows at least every few months. The problem now for the bbc, is that all the different levels of boxing are covered, with Sky Sports and Setanta having domestic and world title fights and itv4 mopping uo the rest. This situation seems to suit the bbc, who have no intention of making inroads into the sport, abiet a fourth yearly trip to the olympics. Not everyone can afford the subscriptions to Sky Sports or Setanta or go online, so their only outlet to watch boxing is itv3 and itv4. This is where the bbc should come into play. Maybe if it halved the saleries of the executives, it could afford to schedule some boxing shows, but this is more about politics and dogma, than it is about finance and will continue untill the bbc is lobbied to change it's current stance

you are right and the problem lies with who ever is head of sport because if that person isnt a boxing fan then it aint going to happen. The BBC are just snobs it seems when it comes to boxing and after the Olympic success they prefer to show canoeing and other small sports before the rough old world of boxing. Ok these sports need the backing and i'm sure the athletes are very good at what they do but its hardly top level sport. For crying out loud the best the Beeb can do with its boxing coverage is have Froch on question of sport or a Weekest link boxing Special which is IMO shameful.

Right, after a reading the above post and the authors reply I'm now in agreement with the BBC.

Why invest in something you don't give a shít about! who gives a toss if you mistook z for a v, in all honesty I'm more concerned with the tax payers scandal which is also about as riveting as this thread.

I wish the BBC would use my licence fee to invest in a bit of boxing- I'd love to see a live fight with no advert breaks in between rounds.

i would like the same and i wish this thread had started differently as the BBC and their attitude to boxing is good subject.

Would be good indeed, all the sports which I watch I have to get Sky or Setanta to watch on top of my TV licence.

BBC show eff all worth watching - "We've got the Formula 1 World Championship" I watch Indy Cars, far more entertaining. D
