As the cinderella man film has been (somewhat) salated over in its own thread was just wondering what the best boxing films are...

Hurricane is great, but discredited for its accuracies.
Raging bull is the obvious one

thoughts?

Rocky is an obvious one.

Midnight Sting/Diggstown was pretty entertaining.

Great White Hype was good too although a little dated with the rise of the European heavyweights.

I haven't seen too many boxing films, but the one which stands out for me is the original Rocky film, sure the sequels were more action packed and fun to watch when I were younger but when you look back at them now they are just the typical cliched sports movie with the over-the-top come from behind victory at the end, the first one was much more than that.

Raging Bull is a good film, I think it is overrated though but DeNiro gives a top class performance.

Raging Bull is the best by a mile IMO, followed by Rocky 1 and 2 (and 3,4 and 6), The Champ and On The Waterfront....

Some are quite amusing, like Great White Hype and Play it to the Bone, but generally they are shite..

What about Gladiator with Cuba Gooding Jnr, very good film. anyone who said Rocky 1 is bad acting just doesn't understand the film.

Not seen Gladiator but I agree with you on Rocky, he's supposed to be a thick, lumbering oaf and the part is played to perfection and the rest of the acting is top notch as well.

Requiem for a Heavyweight is a rather dark and sad look at life and the boxer being betrayed. But worth a watch.

The Harder they Fall is very entertaining

Story of a foreign heavyweight controlled by the mafia who climbs up the ranks in rigged matches. The actor looks like Primo Carnera and he eventually he fights the real Max Baer. Jersey Joe Walcott plays his trainer and Bogart is the washed up hacked hired to look after him. Great stuff.

Million Dollar Baby is the worst film ever to win an Oscar. Girlfight is ten times better.

Gentleman Jim is an excellent portayal of Corbett's defeat of the seemingly invincible John L. Sullivan. Freddie Steele performs the footwork scenes in the film (world middleweight champion). It stars Errol Flynn, who always said it was the best film he ever made.

I'm a Humphrey Bogart fan and always wanted to see that film. I just looked it up on ebay and brought it for £3 including delivery. What a bargain! Apparently The Harder they Fall was Humphrey Bogart last film. He died a year later.
