Gallagher: 'Murray would fight Hatton

I never realised how pathetic ...erm I mean prophetic Joe Gallagher was.In his recent interview with Terrence Dooley in Boxing News online he states "Murray Would Fight Hatton"......well folks he just might have to after failing to make the weight for tomorrows showdown with Scot Lawton.

Unfortunately Murray is following in the footsteps of former Manchester boxing hero Ricky Hatton who made drunkeness and crashing weight for contests fashionable. It seems like only yesterday since Murray was interviewed on Manchesters Channel M
stating he was gonna kick back and smoke a few spliffs which prompted the BBB of C to drug test his next contest.

Gallagher on Thaxtons recent loss

“The fight no longer has the same appeal.” he continued “Jon has got nothing to offer us now but they are ready to give Thaxton a shot at John’s belt; where was our shot? To be honest we see Scott Lawton as a tougher fight than Jon Thaxton.”
Hmmmm well Mr Gallagher as you stated to anyone who was listening today at the weigh in ..."I have done my job"
You are right Thaxton v Murray will not have the same appeal, win or lose on Saturday night Murray will remain beltless.....great job Joe!!!!!

Like the characters Lloydd Christmas and Harry Dunne you two are certainly Dumb and Dumber.

Joe ,John and Kerry .....Larry, Moe, and Curly whats the difference?

Joe, thanks to this F**K up John wont get a look in at the title for at least 12-18 months we are going to be deprived of a great fight between Thaxton v Murray.Thaxton looks like getting a soft option for the vacant belt, mind you he is a lovely hard working clean living professional fighter who has nothing but praise for promoter Mick Hennessy who did so much to re ignite his career.
Somehow I cant see you being the top of Hennessy Sports Christmas card list.....Joe dont give up the day job.

...and people say my attacks on the horribly arrogant few are personal! Joe Gallagher is not Murray's father. He cannot live with Murray.

regardless of what you say, thaxton v murray held way more appeal when thaxton had the EBU belt, and john murray should have been kept active, which is what murray and gallagher have asked and asked for. they have been very agitated about this, a real cause for concern.

have you got any proof about drunknenness? terry has already addressed the spliff thing - i think murray was having a laugh

wondering if you reacted so strongly when fewkes, corrales, castillo, guzman and campbell did this, some of them heaier than murray came in - was the reaction as aggressive?

activity, big fights, regular work? - he's waited long enough to fight scott lawton (no offence to lawton)

Either way we all lose out, we miss a good British fight, a good rivalry becomes a verbal one, and it makes British boxing look a little bit daft.

If Murray-Thaxton can survive the disaster of losing a EBU title, then it can get over this latest little bump in the road. The fact this natural British fight has not been made yet is not down to an afternoon weigh in that took place almost a year after the fight took place, it is down to a lack of urgency in making the fight.

For me the mistake of coming in a tiny bit over weight wasn't a great one. It happens all the time and scales vary. The mistake was not getting there on time and being allowed to shift the weight. Fair enough they were stuck in traffic but its just a bit too casual and its cost Murray a hell of a lot.

And Murray not being able to make the weight and arriving too late at the weigh in to lose the extra ounce doesn't make British boxing look daft?

Why don't they rename Murray - John "Inactivity" Murray because all I ever hear about him is his inactivity. They might as well stitch is across his waistband so the world could know how unfairly he's been treated. I'm sick of hearing about it. He wasn't even British champ this time last year and Thaxton was on the verge of winning the European so how would the fight have been made then? I don't remember too many people complaining about the Meager fight when it was made.

Also did he not pull out of a scheduled defence last December and does anyone know the exact reasons why? Did a club doorman have anything to do with it? Since then he's had two fights in 6 months (McAllister and now Lawton), is that not pretty average activity for a British champ.....sorry former British champ.

I like Murray, he's exciting and a decent fighter but he and those around him need to get their heads down and concentrate on preparing for fights as opposed to moaning about non existent inactivity.

you have to think being British champion must be a disappointment for Murray. What exactly has the British title done apart from leave him stuck waiting, yet again? The time for Murray to make a mark was LAST YEAR. Regular fights, exciting performances, ppl given reason to talk about him. Instead, ppl come out the woodwork twice a year to slag him and his team off. Now we're in the thick of a recession, TV is turning its back on boxing, if ppl can save money without boxing then they will drop the sport. What a great time for John Murray to make his mark, two thousand and bloody nine! What a time to give Murray-Thaxton the go-ahead - when most ppl no longer care.

Murray had to postpone the Lee McAllister fight a few months. A club doorman didn't have anything to do with it. What is it with sensationalising his injury?

Stuck waiting? For what? The only thing he's been stuck in is traffic apparently. If he had managed to make the weight and beat Lawton he would have had a mandatory with Thaxton with the winner getting a Lonsdale belt outright. A win there would surely have secured him a European title fight, not bad for a 24 year old if you ask me.

Compare Murray's reign to some of the other British champions who have held the British title for similar lengths of time. Danny Williams has fought 3 times, Kelly Brook has fought 3 times and Rob Norton has fought twice. They all won their British titles about the same time as Murray and I don't see any campaigns for them to be kept busier.

Murray will also have fought 3 times in just under a year after tonight and he also withdrew from the original McAllister date (and I like sweet science heard that it was due to an unscheduled spot of sparring in a niteclub). Murray's camp were moaning about the oppurtunities and publicity the likes of Darren Barker was getting but Barker's also fought 3 times in the same period so whats the problem.

Maybe it's the chip on the shoulder that caused him to come in overweight?

that's hilarious - having a chip on his shoulder made him come in over weight. i've not heard that one before. do you mean figuratively, or literally? does attitude weight? can a chip from the chippie make you come in a fraction over the weight? surely he would have taken it off

he wanted a quick defence after mcallister, wanted a spot on the thaxton-mezaache undercard. you may have noticed, murray is a pressure fighter, the style that really needs momentum. all this stop and start isn't very good for his career. gallagher has been in distress about this every time i have talked to him

Again can you please point out the stop and start to me? As I have already explained Murray is every bit as active as 99% of the other fighters at the same level.

Are people so concerned about Murray's "inactivity" because he needs to be in the gym 24/7 and fighting once a month to 1) make lightweight and 2) keep out of bother?

are you one of these ppl who need to have the point sledge hammered home, time after time?

twice a year isn't very good really. 3-4 times a year is good.

murray doesn't have a big profile. if he stops 4 ppl in a year, ppl talk about him more often, they don't forget about him. if he fights twice, they see him fight, he disappears for 1/2 a year, then he makes another appearance, and no one's too excited.

Murray is aggressive, he imposes himself, puts the other guy on the backfoot. I would say it's a demanding style of fighting. He also can start slowly. to maintain sharpness, he has to be busier, as it is easier to pick things up again.

3 or 4 fights a year was good for a young Gomez, 4-5 fights a year was good for a young Hatton. Also have you wondered that Murray maybe wants more work/more money. Hatton had 5 WBU fights in one year, plenty of money there.

Autobarn makes a very good point concerning Murray's activity - in the early years Murray was out regularly fighting and I also feel at championship level - Murray is the sort of fighter who needs to be kept in the zone otherwise other temptations come to the fore.

However - a point I think should be made loud and clear - Gallagher and Murray have taken what I feel at times some deserved criticisms on here in the past ( a lot from me) - I honestly thought last night they not only spoke very well indeed but they were also very humble in that they admitted they were unprofessional and they had made a mistake - I thought it very refreshing instead of the excuses they quite simply held their hands up.

Also what I thought was good to hear was Meaty Mick, Gallagher and John Murray being so thoughtful about Scott Lawton - especially after what has already been pointed out on the other thread concerning that ****ing idiot from ITV interviewing Lawton after the fight.

anyway, what are the Board going to do?

knock murray back, give the shot to an English or Celtic level guy? or will thye go with Hennessy's plan to match Murray and Thaxton?

obviously we didn't see what happened to Fewkes - who came in a pound and a quarter over, spent, and stopped v Gethin - because he's stopped boxing for a while.

Clearly a % of his purse will be the minimum he gets as a fine - it would not surprise me if the BBBofC have already stopped a certain % being paid pending the hearing.

My guess is if the BBBofC were to be really harsh then they could suspend Murray's licence for possibly 3 months or so - but whilst a clear mistake has happened and yep it was unprofessional it would be harsh on Murray if that were to happen - boxers have failed to make the weight in the past and this fuss has not happened before - the most recent one I can think of was Kiko Martinez over in Ireland when he was going to fight Wayne McCullough - at least I think it was that fight - there have been others too.

Whilst it was a mistake and unprofessional - even the BBBofC official at the weigh in was at pains to say he was 0.08 out and he seemed embarassed to say that too.

Whilst there should be some form of sanction on Murray - I do not think the BBBofC should hamper his progression with regards future fights again Thaxton etc etc - in addition it will tell me everything I need to know about the BBBofC if they are harsh on Murray when in my opinion if Murray was signed to a certain other promoter there probably wouldn't even be a hearing as phone calls would be made.

Lets be honest here - it was a piddly amount of weight.

Hit him in the pocket and let Murray and Thaxton fight for the vacant belt soon
