The gloves in MMA are very different to boxing, and Mercer was a world class fighter with a serious dig on him.

It would be just as possible for someone to get Mercer in a leg lock and submit him in the blink of an eye - or kick him in the head and knock him out.

Boxing is a martial art, so why the big surprise. Boxing is just limited in that you only use your fists and don't grapple or throw.

There are LOTS of quick knockouts in MMA - so why is it so surprising that Mercer, who by dint of his long boxing career is going to be a superlative striker, is able to knock someone out with one punch.

Boxing fans need to get their heads out of their arses. I love boxing, and I am growing to love MMA, they are both fantastic sports, and the combatants involved in each sport are dedicated professionals, and very very tough men.

Boxing needs to worry about it's own act, because MMA has stolen a march by putting on competitive fights between hungry fighters at the top of their game.

Yes, but McDermott would be facing him in a BOXING MATCH with BOXING GLOVES.

Most MMA fighters are not as adept defensively against striking. The reason for this is that they also have to be wary of take-downs, kicks, etc. They fight out of a different stance to boxers, much more square on and with the weight more evenly distributed on both feet.

Doesn't prove anything realy imo, it's no supprise that standing up boxers will be more effective but most fights end up on the ground so then they are fucked

Tyson would probably have punked it, he really didn't want to fight by that point, and taking on a 300 lb giant who is grappling with you wouldn't have had much appeal for him.

Oh apparently Sylvia weighed in over 300 lbs, and there were no takedowns allowed in the fight.

Had it been 1996, I'd agree with you all. But then Silva would be a spotty teenager and get owned. But a 50 year old former boxer KOing a former, even 4 years past prime and vastly overweight, is still impressive for me.

Tyson allegedly had an MMA contract at one point. Terry, why didn't this happen after their staredown in the ring? I can't remember.
