What has happenned to Nicky Smedley ?

I see from boxrec that he last fought in march 2008 and is due to fight in next month, with an opponent that has as yet, not been named. Why the long lay off ?

Nicky has only had 11 fights in four years and has vitually dropped out of the scene altogether. He started out gaining the headlines and seemed to be one to watch out for and whilst i know that he had an injury a few years back, he seems to have been completely inactive recently and eleven fights in four years, seems very strange to me. I don't think he has even fought for an area title yet or gone past six rounds in a fight. He is now 23 years of age and people like Kell Brook are way ahead of Nikky Smedley.

I feel a bit fustrated, because my father new the guy who trained Nicky when he was an amateur and i saw video footage of him and whilst he had a few flaws to iron out and develop into the pro game, he seemed to have a lot of talent. I can remember when he went over to America and was due to fight, but the fight was cancelled and he put on an exhibition instead and was getting some very good reviews from people such as Mike McCallum and a few others well known in the fight game.

What has happenned to Nicky Smedley ?

I would have thought that he would have been on the fringes of a British title challenge by now, considering his pedigree as an amateur and the praise he was getting when he first turned pro......

Anyone know anything ? (Particularly the lads from Sheffield)

I would agree Hitman and i think it's because they were'nt sure what weight he was going to fight at initially. I think he started out as a lightweight (as an amateur) and fought as a light - welterweight at the start of his pro career, but now he's down as fighting at welterweight, which means that any punch power he may have had at the lighter weight catogory's has vanished. My dad said that one of his first trainers (Glyn) used to constantly talk about about Nicky's power, but as i say, that was as an amateur and i think he was fighting at around lightweight back then.

I think Nicky had a back and a hand injury (was bitten by a dog) and probably got a bit dissalushioned by the inactivity. He is a talent no doubt about it.If he fights regularly and concentrates he can definitely get something out of the game.Re: his punch. He does'nt lack a dig at all. He just needs to sit down on his punches more in fights.He certainly punches hard in sparring.

I hope he really goes for it!!

were there issues with promoters...im suresmedley was under the FA banner ,perhaps spud can enlighten us as i dont have a clue, just something in my distant memory.

itmakes me laugh when ppl say he cant punch,ask anyone who spad him or the opponents hes kod,the problemwith nicki was he hit them hard early and they just covered up rest of fights,but i agree nicki should have titles now but he hasnt..he had syatica in his back plus a pit bull bit his finger and he also lost the desire to box..how frustrating for me his trainer, but what could i do.,.dennis did a great job promoting him getting him known here and in america,but nicki didnt have a problem with dennis infact they still get on great now.nicki is hoping to comeback on 26th july although 2 week ago he got an airline fracture in his left hand ,we are hopin it will be ok as he is aving treatment,hes 23yrs old so still very young but needs to get his self back sooner than later..I can also state that with his cousin Liam Cameron winning The welterweight ABA and British title its give him that little bit of hunger again as all the attentions not on him now so its also took the pressure off him too...

I haven't spoken to anyone in Cyprus, but it was reported in the local rag that Hobson handed him his contract back.

he was out of contract at the time,so never believe what you read and whats cyprus got to do with it :??

I am willing to bet Nick Smedley will be fighting under the Fight Academy or Dennis Hobson banner again at somestage.

Has been back in the gym but presently has a problem with one of his hands - was told he was due to fight in July but that is now doubtful.

his left hand as 2 air line fractures on it which happened 2 weeks ago..he is desperate to get back in the ring managed by dennis. we are still hopefull to get him in and get back on track..

6 weeks for a hair line fracture to heal.

whats six weeks got to do with it Rhino, you cant put a time on it with a Hand.
