A Fighter's nickname......Good or bad idea

It seems that these days, it's obligatory for every fighter to have a nickname, regardless of what they have achieved and i was wondering whether, if the name sounds naff, is it worth having it at all ?

When i saw that Steve Barnes' nickname was "Super Bad", i thought, yeah, it's definately a super bad nickname. Then came his under par performance on saturday night, which opened up all the joke makers to say that it was a very apt nickname indeed and a deserving one.

So should fighter's bother with having nicknames or does a nickname only have some meaning, once the fighter achieves a certain amount of recognition ? My favourite has always been James Toney's "Lights out", which is great, because it implies something very strong, but is'nt based on anything that rymes with his last name. Some names though, sound like they have been made up on the walk to the ring, such as "nightmare", "The entertainer", "Hitman", "Bad intentions", etc etc. Even Lennox had the awful nickname of the "Pugulist specialist" and try saying that after ten pints and a whiskey chaser

What do you guys think ?

Bad Idea when you can pun it endlessly - A-Force becomes A-Farce, Z-Force and so on...

Some nicknames are good like "Marvellous" "The Dark Destroyer" "Hands of Stone" "Shannon The Cannon"

Some are good but don't suit the fighter who uses them for example - "The Hispanic Causing Panic" is a great nickname but I think it would have been better suited to a fighter like Morales than Lazcano.

Most nicknames on the other hand are terrible and corny, Audley "A-Force" Harrison, Dominic "The Southern Disaster" Guinn(WTF is a southern disaster?) Johnny "The Entertainer" Nelson.

Lennox only carried a nickname for one fight, his defeat to Rahman he added Lion as his moniker perhaps in deference to the African continent he landed on 20 minutes before the first bell.

However, it was never heard again.

Some awful ones, especially Small's........it was bad enough before we realised what a tosser he is!

Pazmanian Devil was a given, I like the takes on peoples names like 'Second to' Nunn, 'Dappa' Napa, 'Too Smooth' Booth etc.

I want to love Roman "made in Hell" Karmazin - because it so very nearly works, doesnt quite get the rhyme or rhythm correct... perhaps if I were Russian and pissed on vodka it'd sound spot on.

My fave is Renaldo 'Mr' Snipes.

Also good - Macho Camacho, The Hawk, The Truth, Iron (it just fitted perfectly)


Bad - Hitman for anyone but Hearns, anything with more that two words (like 'Simply the best')

Ligts Out would have been the greatest ever if it wa sattched to someone like Julian Jackson

I think Pacquaio has the best one because Pacman is pretty much his name now

One of my favourites is Iron Mike Tyson - it comes off the tongue so easily, and I like Pacman too. Some other one I found good was this fat dude who fought Solis - I think his was "The big, fat, ugly white dork" or something along those lines.

I was suprised that Hatton took Hearn's nickname, because as you say, there is only one Hitman......

Yeah, it is a good one and it almost feels as if you should say "iron" automatically, because it rolls off the tongue so easily. Prince Naseem Hamed was quite similar, in fact i bet a few yanks thought that he was a prince

Plus, people use to say just Iron Mike and that was just as good, but Iron Mike Tyson was phenomenal, and quite fitting. I couldn't imagine it being Iron Audley Harrison. That name was made for Tyson, and it will always be my favourite.

lol I remember on the maxboxing boards years ago some american guy saying the only reason Naz was a success was because he was born into royalty so he had everything he needed to become an athlete etc. Wasn't ironic either, he actually thought Naz was a prince.
