does anyone have any memories or personal stories of this great figure of british boxing. i have heard how he...um..how can i say this..."politely asked" john stracey to arise from the canvas at the fateful climax of the palomino fight.
any anecdotes about terry and his band of fighters from the lowly likes of pat pain to the dizzy heights of maurice hope..all tales would be most welcome.

No stories about terry lawless,but i have a good one about harry gibbs the referee.I was in vegas to watch ray leonard vs donny lalonde and harry was staying in the same hotel as me,i met him in the lift and he was really pleased to meet someone from the uk,he then took me to the bar in the hotel and we had a few beers and talked about his career,especially the famous bugner vs cooper fight and he told me why he gave bugner the nod which caused uproar around the country at the time and is still talked about today,great memory for me to tell my kids about.

I used to film the Duff-Lawless shows from 1987...One day (1988) Nigel Benn was up the Royal oak gym talking with Bruno, possibility of Nigel to spar with Frank for his 1st fight against Tyson (strange I know), and when Lawless got home, a biker gave him a letter from Benn manager telling him to not to approach his fighter, now Lawless was wondering where Benns manager got this info from, he was working out who was in the gym, me being one one them, I was then told I was not allowed to film the shows anymore because I had told Benns manager he was at the royal oak!! I had never even met Benns Manager let alone speak to him, so I was banned for about a year, then Terry found out it was not me, but one of his Boxers who had a conversation with a promoter he was seeing, and that promoter told Benns manager, hence my ban!!, Terry did apolagise, but for me, it was too late..tho I did still film the shows!!

thats why i asked...it sounded like a typical mendy piece of work, but it seems it wasnt ambrose at that time

Stracey was stopped on his feet in a corner by referee Sid Nathan, Harry, but had been down twice before. Lawless, of course, was one of the infamous Cartel (Astaire, Duff, Lawless and Barrett) which monopolised domestic boxing (and The Board) for many years until F rank Warren came along and broke that monopoly (aided and abetted by writer Harry Mullan, who was all for good-old fashioned competition). Lawless was horribly cautious in his approach to training and decent opposition for his fighters but was a fine motivator in the corner and knew the importance of home turf.
Ultimately and inevitably, Lawless was 99 per cent motivated by money.

Why?

Harry would have labelled it one of his "honest" decisions; i.e, it didn't matter what others thought about the decision as long as he "honestly" thought Bugner had nicked it.
The entire Wembley crowd were jeering.
Cooper was told at the end of the 10th round by The Bishop, "You're not being busy enough - he's going to nick it." He went out and the won the 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th rounds (to most neutral observers) and, in his own words, "at worst halved the 15th. I can't see anyway that I could have lost the fight."

yeah, Ambrose brought Mike Tyson down last year to the Loughton Football Academy for a dinner event, he still slips in and about in Boxing..

bennie, of course i knew how the palomino fight ended but it was what terry was shouting at the distraught figure of john as he went down from those body shots that concerned me. the air was turning blue as terry "politely asked" stracey to continue the fight. little compassion was shown to the guy who had won the world title and brought world recognition to the lawless camp.

terry let me into leeds town hall when henry wharton beat rod carr and he knew i didnt have a ticket.it was chaos at ringide that night

why was ambrose banged up, serious question, i know he has done time but not sure why.

Great atmosphere in a great venue. I had forgotten what memorable nights Wharton put on in Leeds

the best,mate.i have been to all levels of boxing before and since but nothing matches the town hall.it was crazy when hard henry boxed there

Well, he trained four men to world titles (Stracey, Hope, Watt and Magri) but Palomino went on to make seven defences and pick up a record payday for the welterweight division back then (550,000 dollars) when he lost the title to Benitez in Puerto Rico in January 1979.
Chris Sanigar once told me (of the Cartel). "It killed them to give you the bus money home."
