Your welcome. I didnt think this piece of history didnt exist on film, but I was wrong. Tunney, I believe was later quoted that he couldnt believe the almost 60 year old Corbett was still so saavy and nimble, couldnt believe how well sounded he was as a boxer.

Corbett and Tunney were similar to each other in some ways. Both were boxers who outsmarted their opponents. Both upset long time champions who had been idle for 3 years. Neither have been that popular.
Nice to see that they are getting some attention here.

- Seems designed as a promotional release for Tunney's next fight.
Reminds me of the Sullivan/Jeffries/Corbett footage where Sullivan puts a feint on Corbett in a much more convincing fashion. This a choreograph with Corbett's wearing patent leather shoes.
Corbett winds up on his punches in the footage showing most unimpressive techniques by modern standards. Always been more impressed with Corbett's foot movement than any thing he did with his hands. Nice little historical clip though.

Yes, especially with his statement that Corbett was as good as Benny Leonard.

Corbett showed alot in the clips of what was then known as a 'vertical punch', which was later fashioned into the modern uppercut, as well as what was then known as a 'cork screw punch'. It looks hokey as hell today, but in Corbett's day, men were more methodical, they didn't waste punches, and they threw from any angle they could, even if the punches looked like something out of martial arts.

indeed the reason was because they were schooled by the old bake knucklers who took plenty more damage from punches so adopted the style to avoid the punch i cant help thinking that teh bake knuckle stance and fighting style would cause problems for todays fighters aprts from the high chin defence

Tell that to those who dismiss bare knuckle fighters, or those molded from around that time frame.

Thats a really interesting book anway FIGHT PICTURES by Dan Streible.
It has an entire chapter on the Corbett-Fitzsimmons fight, and the lost version of the Jeffries-Sharky bout.
Jack Johnson's fights too.

I see you are a mind reader.
You should use your ability to make a killing in the financial markets.
I can't tell you how IMPRESSED I am with your unique ability to read minds.

Too bad you weren't around then to correct Gene Tunney when he spoke.
You could have shown him the error of his ways.
LOL

It would be interesting to know what Pathe News did with all the original film footage of the fights they filmed.
Probably scrapped them on the editing room floor and either tossed it away or recycled it.
