Clottey seems to be a big hit......why??

Just read some posts on the general forum about Joshua Clottey and I wondered what people thought??

The way I see it we are talking about a good fighter who did deserve his shot but....

Clottey fought basically a 1 eyed fighter from rounds 4 to 12.....tried to get a point taken away three times in the fight....(complained of knee injury...punch to the head when he was facing the crowd! and a low blow nobody actually saw..!)

He did show a very solid defence but did not throw enough shots to win the fight when he had a clear advantage over Cotto...

so I'm wondering where all the praise is coming from...I actually found him quite annoying to watch and also didn't agree with how he was trying to get a point taken off when he knew he had a 10-8 round scored against him in the first..

Thoughts??

good post.

i thought exactly the same thing,i was screaming at clottey to press home his advantage in the last quarter of the fight, he must have woke up the next day kicking him self and can only blame one person.A victory over cotto would have earnt clottey big bucks in a rematch or set up a fight with the likes of sugar shane or even paul williams who still claims he can make welterweight.

Problem I have is that even if Clottey had pressed home the advantage, he STILL wouldn't have won a decision.

Close fight which could've gone either way but went to the guy who draws the biggest crowd. It's natural to feel a bit of sympathy for the guy who was inevitably going to lose if the fight went close. Clottey was also the one pressing the fight and hurting his opponent. Clottey let it slip by not pressing his advantage in the last few rounds and I can't say I was a fan of his antics, but lots of fighters do things in and out the ring that wind me up.

house fighters generally get the desision in a close fight and i think he tried to level the playing field abit but i dont doubt the knee injury was real the low blow wasnt and the rabbit punch seemed to be made worse than what it was but alot of people would have fught on through a knee injury or a cut like cotto had
i like clotty because hes hard as nails as in the margarito fight clotty fought half the fight with 2 broken hands

Agree with the point you said about him trying to get points deducted. In my opinion he behaved like a moron. You might get hit low, or on the back of the head or get involved in a bit of wrestling but it's a high contact sport at the end of the day so get on with it. For that reason, I am not a huge fan. It was the first time I watched him live (on TV) and first impressions count.

I like Clottey he is hard and will keep coming though i did think his antics were poor trying to get points taking away but he is a warrior he doesnt have brilliant boxing ability but he will try his best and keep coming

i honestly believe that if clottey was more positive and ruthless he would have had to be awarded the decision. Sure american judges are far from perfect, but look at trinidad - delahoya-judges didnt bottle it there

MY thoughts are that Clottey won, he outlanded Cotto by 50punches, scored the better shots, had Cotto moving backwards/running the second half of the fight and made Cotto ineffective

Clottey has a good relaxed style, can fight different styles of opponents, has a tight defence, not to mention a good compact look about him.

Yet there is something lacking. He doesn't put in a full 12 rounds. He seems hard as nails but is an 8 round fighter. He could have pressed the attack on Cotto, he could have walked a bleeding Cotto down. Despite the bad leg, Clottey had a dead man (for want of a better term) in there due to cut and poor stamina.

I felt Clottey just seemed to nick it.

Both look really talented but there was something feeble about both. It wasn't just the injuries. These 2 could have put on a classic, if they were a bit better.

If Pac wasn't with Top Rank, there's no way Cotto would have a Pac fight coming up.

ver well put. Ive always thought cotto was world class but not hall of fame standard has many believe. The next strong welter he fights, beats him. Id put big money on a revitalised sugar shane to win a rematch if they thought again.

i think clottey will become the new ben tackie, extremely tough and durable but fails to beat the guys that are going places

Yeah, Clottey seems to have a mental block that prevents him from beating the top boys. A success barrier, I think it's called. He will become the new Tackie.

As for Cotto, I wouldn't be too quick to write him off. Margarito had bricks in his glove and he had a terrible cut against Clottey which was preventing him from seeing punches. He remains a terrific fighter in my eyes.

Superb fundamentals but seems relunctant to push himself further. Can be expected in a fighter with no clout behind him, but surprising when backed by Arum.

without a doubt miguel cotto is a superb fighter he s just a lot more beatable than some people make out especially at welter
