Good advice there

So if I subscribed by credit card as opposed to direct debit, Setanta will continue to withdraw subscription payments, indefinitely, after they've gone under?

It is good advice, but being a banking cabbage, at least the UK banking system, how do I actually do this??

I currently pay by Mastercard (ie: recurring payment) if I ring Setanta and tell them I want to go onto a Direct Debit, what information do I need to provide to them with?? and how do I set this up with my bank.

My bank is useless (Barclays) whenever I call it takes years to get through and even then you get some outsourced nightmare who basically read to you from a pre written card. Ask them anything outside the box and they have no clue.

I have a UK bank account.

You call setanta, give them the bank details of your account you wish them to take the money out of, usually sort code, account number and name of bank and setanta will then contact your bank and the direct debit will then be set up. You won't need to contact your bank directly about it.

i cancelled a month ago....I thought I had been paying by DD.....going to have to go check with the bank now.

they wouldn't do it on the phone as people could do it maliciously apparently, you have to cancel in writing/ email.
I just thought that was cos people wouldn't be bothered and they'd keep taking the cash.

If payments are taken by card, known as recurring payments, you have no right to cancel the payment with the card company, meaning you're relying on the firm, such as Setanta, to stop taking payments.

This is a problem with all payment by this method, I've had the same problem with an internet subscription.

However, there are ways.

I bank with First Direct, and they advised that if I put in writing (to Setanta, or whoever) that I am cancelling the subscription, and keep proof of the letter/proof of posting, then the bank CAN dispute the transaction each month. However, this is far from ideal.

The other thing to do, is "lose" your debit card, and request a new one. The one that they are charging will be stopped, meaning any attempts to collect payments from it are refused. Of course, only do that as a last resort- if they are still active, and they take a payment that is refused, then they could demand money for the service or cut you offer.

Once when I actually DID lose my debit card, I requested a new one and totally forgot to change the bank card details with an ongoing internet subscription, and a hotel booking. So when they came to charge me, it was refused, and I got some nasty e mails!

can someone give me details on how to do it please, i know there was a thread somewhere, but i cant find it.

I tried to cancel them before and THEY STILL TAKE MONEY OUT OF YOUR ACCOUNT.

So cancel the direct debit if you have one and make sure you talk to your bank about making sure they can't continue to take your money.

That's the reason they are going out of business.

Don't just cancel the direct debit as they will still class you as been under contract.

i cancelled it by email, then i cancelled the DD. Now I'm getting texts asking me to 'urgently contact setanta about your account' which i am obviously ignoring.

I cancelled my freeview and switched to sky account at different address. They continued to take both direct debits out.


I emailed, wrote letters and spoke to various departments. I have wrote a letter demanding a refund with no reply. SO I cancelled both direct debits.

Yesterday they rang me stating that there was no payments set up and asking me for my details.
I asked them if there was any notes on my account about my switching of accounts or payments owed to me....they stated no, there was no information to my account but he couldnt help because he was too BUSY and would I mind waiting to be put through to another department. I wont repeat what I said. Needless to say I am no longer a shitanta customer

I just cancelled the direct debit and got a couple of letters telling me I owed them another payment. Ignored them and heard no more. Complete joke company.

I remember when I first got Setanta, it was the Saturday when Haye was fighting Mormeck and Cotto was fighting Mosley in the early hours. I phoned them up at 9am and they assured me that the Setanta channels would be on my screen in an hour. Ten hours later and it still hadn't come on, so I had to feck off and watch it at my mates. It didn't come on until the following Wednesday. I rang up trying to cancel as when I inquired why they had lied to me and showed no help when I continually phoned up on the Saturday, they said I could have Setanta for £5 a month from now on and they would refund my subscription fee, if I stayed with them and didn't cancel.

No wonder they are going bust.

I just cancelled my DD through the bank with them as I figured from the all the feedback you get from trying to contact them directly it gets you nowhere, anyway by the looks of it they'll be going bust pretty soon so it'll be inconsequential.

Setanta started off well which is why I subscribed...but then Warren fooked off to Sky, then they started puttin live stuff on Setanta 2 which freeviewers can't get and the boxing available by them became less and less to the point that their 'home of boxing' tag became a downright lie...I only got it for the boxing, nothing else, it doesn't matter to me that they're losing the Premier League...if they said they will be showing more boxing then I'd stay, but at the moment I'm paying 10.99 and watching nowt, so it's time to say bye bye.

I cancelled the direct debit, they spent about a month bombarding me with the snidey phone calls and I used the old "I'll complain about harrasment if you carry on" routine and I've heard nothing from them since.

cool (apart from the harrasment I mean) looks like cancelling the DD will suffice then.

cancel ur direct debit as i did.

This was one of their big problems from the start. People didn't want to sign up with them because there were so many stories about them trying to block people from cancelling. Made them look small time.

... Or will monthly payments cancel anyway because they're out of business...?

They say no more charges, but not sure. Setanta Ireland is still going over here.

Bunce - any chance you can talk to your old bosses about using Setanta Ireland?

I've heard its fcuking murder to cancel an existing subscription. Setanta have given a number for existing subscribers to call to cancel, but there's no sod there to deal with any calls!

I filled out the online cancellation form and then rang the bank and told 'em I'd lost my card. Oops.

Both I and a work colleague e-mailed and had ours cancelled - job done.
