What is slightly odd is that at no point does this article mention that it is not BBBC sanctioned professional boxing.
The quote "But this has an extra special edge to it as he looks to bow out of his illustrious career in style by notching up his 39th win from 49 fights." is a bit misleading.
This won't actually be classed as Gomez's 50th fight on boxrec etc, or on his professional record.

Rob Newbiggin is often seen around here these days, didn't know he was on the white collar circuit though.

Am i mistaken?... Ex pros fighting in unlicensed boxing is not white collar boxing. I appreciate that white collar boxing is unlicensed but its termed 'white collar' because the participants are working fellas from white collar industries - and not ex pros fighting in the unlincensed game.
Unless Michael Gomez has been hired by Alan Sugar and is now somesort of ad campagin manager for Amstrad, he's not a white collar boxer.

Yeah, I thought white collar was more about amateurs just "having a go"- do they even declare a winner in white collar boxing?
This sounds more like a paid, unlicenced show with experienced fighters across the card.

Rob has boxed on the EBF circuit and was down to box ex-pro Eugenio Monteiro for that bodies light-middleweight title last October.

unfortunately its a common misconception .
white colar / semi pro / unlicensed are all the same thing . i promote what i call semi pro shows , i know that depending on what organisation you register with gives it a different name , eg theres 2 ebf's one in south which is english boxing federation and calls itself semi pro and then theres the european boxing federation in midlands and above that call it white collar but theres completely no difference , its all paid boxing where people from boxing backgrounds as ex pre or amateur or people who have never boxed before at all try to work there way to the top with out the hassles of the pro game , some maybe cant get a pro license , some just arent good enough for pro some are now too old for amateur , some just want to box but want to get paid unlike amateur shows , this scene is getting more popular now due to the fact that aba boxing seems almost a totally different sport to the pro boxing , i think the original white collar shows maybe where doctors and office workers etc and still possibly some are but those original white collar shows in america are where the name is likely to have come from , the confusion can also be to do with the rules a promotor or organisation use , i know for example billy bessey lets his lads use headgear if they want to but my lads cant .

I have been to 3 EBF shows - they are good entertainment - I concede the standard of boxing sometimes is not too hot - but the matches on the whole are reasonably good 50/50's or 60/40's - where 2 fighters come to the ring to leather each other in front of their mates - I will repeat sometimes the standards are sometimes low - but what the punters get is full value for money - they want to see 2 fighters who are willing to trade punches - they want to see a bit of claret and then they want to go to the local clubs to get p*ssed - whether we like it or not thats what a lot of "Joe Public" wants - whats more you even get quite a lot of birds coming to these shows.
The Professional Boxing Promoters have a big enough problem making their shows break even - TV is drying up - yet some of them still put on predictable boring shows - I as a fan am desperate to see Professional Boxing survive these difficult times - but these EBF shows that I have been to have been packed out every single time - the atmosphere is great and people go away happy.
I will state it again - I am mightily p*ssed off with the professional circuit at the moment - the promoters need to move with the times and whether they like it or not - they need to get their fighters in some decent scraps instead of continually protecting them.

I think the 50-50 aspect plays a big part in making the shows popular.
Tell you what though, you need a set of balls to get in an unlicensed ring with Gomez... no doubt he'd throw a head in if you were somehow on top.

So boxing is a bit Katie Price; high maintenance, in the public eye, lots of baggage and complicated and unlicensed is Jodie Marsh; similar, not quite as good but well up for it and Jan Leeming is White Collor Boxing; Well spoken, old, willing and looking for a bit of rough?

I'm not actually sure it is 50-50, any more so that professional boxing.
From what I've seen of these, often one fighter is clearly the better of the two, so what happens is basically a beating, with boxers being "allowed" to fight on long after they would have been stopped in the professional game.

David - I do not know what you are impling from your post - you are it seems to me trying to make a joke of whats happening within the sport - if you are not - you seem to be mocking what the likes of me are stating with regards to the state of the professional circuit.
do you not think the professional circuit needs a major overhall?

Completely disagree - sometimes the fights are matched wrongly - f*ck me just like the professional circuit - but on the whole there are some good fights - ON EVERY SHOW!!!

to be fair id disagree here , in my last show for example i had a current proffessional boxer come as the special guest referee and to be honest he occasionally stopped the fights too early.

Well clearly its not going to be as good as top-notch pro fighters because the guys involved arent top notch pro fighters. But if two local football teams are involved in a 5-5 draw it doesnt necesserilly mean the supporters wouldnt enjoy watching the game as much as they would watching United win 3-0 at Wigan. All about levels isnt it.
As for the 50-50 thing - come on, how many pro shows have 50-50 fights. Most young pros are now fighting guys with 1-30 records, at least both the fighters in EBF come to win, no journeymen looking to survive.

[above]No shit Sherlock.
Spud, I don't know where to start.
1 - Get a life.
2 - Get a sense of humour
3 - We're getting out of the sport what we put in - talk about belt holders like world champions and they'll start believing they are, buy tickets or PPV for knockover jobs and you'll get more of the same.
4 - Boxing has being dying for hundred years. Its still here.
5 - Boxing is a commercial business, we don't reward risk. If a fighter loses or struggles in victory he's shot, over-rated, exposed etc yet we moan about over-protected zero's.

Well, stopping a fight too early OR too late is a mistake that an novice ref might make. A current pro isn't necessarily going to be a competent ref.
I've also noticed ref's at unlincenced shows responding to the will of the crowd- in one case, HELPING A GUY up who had been put down legit- the ref started a count, then at about 6 started to pick the guy up, and let him fight on!

Yeah, fair point of course.
Based on my experience, a lot of the shows on unlinced are in reality just as one sided- the difference is that most opponents , unlike professionals like Peter Buckley etc, are less capable of "looking after themselves" so it appears a bit more dramatic. The fact that both guys "have come to win" doesn't make it an even fight- It does usually seem that one guy is naturally better, or fitter, or simply harder!
If the better fighter can knock the opponent out, then it's usually over quite soon. If not, then it's often just however many rounds of holding once both get tired.
It's possible, of course, that I have only ever been to poor quality "unlicenced" shows.

David with regards your first 2 points - yet again I see it is you who gets personal - with regards my life I suspect I have packed more in than you will have the b*llocks to even dream of so don't go there - with regards my sense of humour people will tell you I certainly have one - so less of the personal sh*t unless of course it is in jest - I would suggest your only retort to me on numerous occasions is to come out with your "I am better than you" sh*t - time and time again you resort to the same sort of posts.
I am stunned at your complacent and almost "boxing is beyond reproach" reply at para 4.
And your answer at para 5 is almost one of resignation.
In summing up the only way you seem to answer is the insults or at best the subtle pathetic personal remarks - try to keep to boxing and when you manage that - there maybe occasions that people with a perceived less intellect to yourself may just be correct in their opinons and assumptions.
l thought we had moved on in the forum from the - "I've got nowhere else to go other than to insult Spud" - I honestly thought someone of your supposed elitist intellect standing would be able to debate
boxing and you could leave the insults to someone like myself - clearly I am wrong yet again.

Spud. Can you read?
The over-riding point you make, that I simply insult you and look for ways to do it, is just stupid. I made an attempt at humerous post to summarise the difference between boxing, unlicensed and white-collar with no reference to you, your post or any point you'd made and you took that to be a personal dig at your commentary on the issues in boxing.
It is you who coupled up my post with your neurosis. Not me.
I then insulted you in return byimplication that such is your neurosis that one can only assume you have no life and no sense of humour. It wasn't a hard leap to make at that point.
To return to boxing as you so lovingly claim to want to, my opinion expressed in point 4 is arguably complacent but in the face of hords of doom-mongerers it is important to remember, and we all know you love to reminisce about boxing - even though you only really got in to the sport on Julius Francis' big night, that boxing has been terminally ill since the turn of the century.
You then grow perplexed by my supposed air of resignation in point 5, despite the fact the point I make may fall into the "boxing overhall" you clamour for.
I'm sure you've packed tonnes in to your life Spud, and its important as always not presume anything about me either, now if you don't mind I have a Guardian crossword to wrestle with. So fkk off.
