Haye in plea to Beeb over Klitsch clash By Steve Bunce 5/07/2009

It is thought Sky, who will increase their boxing coverage from September, are favourites to secure the rights to the fight. But Haye's trainer and promotional partner Adam Booth shares his fighter's frustration at the BBC's lack of interest.

"I'm not just a promoter, I'm also a BBC TV licence holder," said Booth.

"It seems the BBC can find money for private flights and iPods but not a great British sporting event like this."

Oh dear, oh dear, what utter gibberish

"I'm not just a promoter, I'm also a BBC TV licence holder," said Booth.
No Adam, you are not a promoter....

Khaosai,
You really have become bitter and twisted on these boards.
I miss your wit, because you've actually become tedious.
Booth is a Promotor. He has his licence.
What's your point ?

the tv licence is just another tax, 48 channels on freeview alone and we have to pay £130 a years to watch eastenders. but i cant get to watch any good football or boxing.

I'm guessing as Haye has been inactive, he's is not actually promoting anything.

Stu,
It's the off season now.
OK there are issues with TV, but I expect Booth to be busy organising Hayemaker shows for the new season.
There's not just David to be Promoted.

"I'm not just a promoter, I'm also a BBC TV licence holder,"

He sounds more like a retired spinster writing to the Daily Mail to complain about a BBC newsreader not wearing a tie, rather than a promoter of boxing

He may have a licence, but i have yet to see him "promote" anything.

David Haye is hardly a crossover star, is he?

Haye has very very little chance against Vitali. His best punch would bounce off Vitalis chin and he is going to be taking right hands from round 1. If the fight happens, I'll be looking closely at the odds on a Vitali stoppage.

Mickey / Khaosai,
Things have changed since the early days.
Booth has his Promotor's licence.
The wording is different on the posters these days.
Keep up, Khaosai !

David Haye is absolutely a Cross Over Star

He Looks good(so the women say) talks well, is exciting and most importantly a HEAVYWEIGHT

5 years ago i could only see one result but Vitali will be 38 going into the Fight against Haye so is hardly at his Prime.

Live boxing should absolutely be shown on the BBC! Especially when its a fight of this magnitude and involving a British fighter fighting for the Heavyweight title. This is a bona fide proper world championship fight with genuine national interest - arguably the biggest fight within the sport that can involve any British boxer.

I dont know what Haye and Booth are asking for from the BBC. But regardless, at the very least surely the BBC have a responsibility to be enquiring about purchasing the rights to the fight. If Haye and Booth are asking for stupid money, fine - but the BBC should be attempting to negotiate for the fight as a bare minimum.

We have too much run-of-the-mill horse-related sports on the BBC. Haye v Klitschko is exactly the sort of one-off sporting event that the BBC should be trying to get hold of.

I actually agree with what Hayemaker Boxing are trying to do here with regards to getting TV for Hayes next fight.

However - Booth in my opinion is getting his approach completely wrong in my view - trying to pressure or corner the BBC executives is not the way to conduct negoitiations in my view.

Furthermore - If I was in Hayes position whilst I would be concerned at getting such a major event televised - there seems to be no word whatsoever concerning the many other boxers he has signed on a promotional contract - perhaps if he gives them the occasional mention here and there - people like myself may not accuse him of being selfish and looking after his own needs rather than ensuring as a boxing promoter his lads are fighting on a regular basis.

agreed.

it's the world heavyweight title (alright a portion of it).

but most people regard vitali as the better of the brothers.

and it looks like taking place in europe.

peak time saturday evening tv.

the beeb could give it the build up and get good figures.

I'd be interested in seeing just how big the fight is in this country. I predict it would get good numbers, due to the fact it's primetime and on BBC. At the same time, let's be real - nobody outside us bunch of sad bastards know who either Haye or Klitschko is. They're not an Andrew Murray, a Lewis Hamilton or a Chris Hoy as much as we'd like them to be.

If the BBC had shown Haye smashing Mormeck and Maccarinelli, followed by Barrett at the O2, then we'd really be talking. Haye would have genuine exposure and he'd be fairly well known in this country.

Fact is, you can't just suddenly build a super fight when neither guy have enjoyed any previous mainstream, primetime coverage in this country. This fight may be big in Germany (mainly due to the Klitschko's popularity), but this fight isn't half as important over here. The BBC probably know that too.

Your spot on with the first part of that. BUT, if you want people to watch the fight heres how to do it -

A. show a david haye highlight reel.
B. Have ricky Hatton say he's the new british hope one numerous teaser trailers.
C. replay the t-shirt press conference.
D. do the same teaser trailers they do for the england and champions legue games but for haye with three lions and sh*t..

Lets face it Khan fights got a good viewing on itv.

The BBC should definitely cover boxing as it has proven that it has a bigger audience than nearly any other sport except football. It's pretty shameful, in fact, that they will cover minority sports like bowls (ffs) and not give any coverage at all to a sport that is still relatively very popular.

Bowls is cheap and on in the daytime when the old biddies can watch it. Boxing is over-priced and often on in the dead of night when no-on wants to watch it. Hardly apples and oranges.

Yes they should be covering more boxing based purely on viewing figures, but they won't due to cost and politics. Ho hum. I actually think that the Beeb is pretty good value for the license fee, assuming you have interests other than boxing. I'd pay the license fee for their radio output alone.

It is outrageous, but write to the BBC about it. As a public funded body, they have to take your complaints seriously. The BBC spends an absolute fortune on football and has forked up millions more for Formula One, in which the only two drivers from the UK are both tax exiles.

Boxing's best hope for a bright future is for more presence in the mainstream and that means newspapers and magazines, not just TV. If you want to see more, don't just put your complaints up here where nobody in power reads them, but write to Sky or the BBC or to national newspaper sports editors. It is generally figured that for every person who bothers to write, threre are another 20 that feel the same. The more emails and letters they get, the more they will take notice.
