A new concept for boxing - in reference to recent threads

Ok I'm claiming copyright straight off and its in writing :TU:

Why not split the weights into divisions like foootball?
It would work like this:
Supermiddleweight:
top 10 fighters would fight in a tournament in the premier division, next 10 in second division and so on and so on.

You would have boxing weekends every month featuring a divison of boxers and at the end of the year, the poorest performing boxers are relegated, and the best ones promoted. The top man in the premier division is crowned undisputed world champ.

Points could be awarded by KO, TKO, Points win etc.

It would have to be a regular turnover of fights, e.g. Every 3 months a boxer MUST fight or face losing their place in the league.

Regular fights for boxers is guaranteed (excellent), regular tv shows in a more exciting format (again better than the situation we have at the mo) and at the end theres one champ.

what do you think?

Dream on.
A little stumbling block - Promotors.
Oh and just one tiny other stumbling block - who gets the sole TV rights ?
Not knocking the concept but it is just unworkable.

Not wishing to piss on your cornflakes but this would obviously be the way things would be run if there was one worldwide governing organisation running things like every other bloody sport in the world. It makes long term business sense which individual promoters don't seem to consider.

Actually, can anyone else think of a sport that gets tv coverage (no matter how little) where there is no governing body to organise tournaments? I really don't know a lot about the most popular sports (football, rugby, cricket etc) so how come corruption and dozens of mickey mouse governing bodies haven't infected these sports in a similar way?

I know its almost impossible to implement in the current scene, but IF boxing was on its last legs, it could be a way to find its popularity again. Like any new concept, its hard to take unless forced into a situation where it seems possible.

The prizefighter event was deemed unworkable, now look at it.

yup, excellent idea and would solve an awful lot of the problems boxing has been facing for years.

as said above, the promoters wouldnt touch it with a 50ft pole, sadly.

TV companies would love it, i wonder if they have the force of will to impose such a thing?

Boxing is its own worst enemy at times
