just wondering where do people rank roy jones jr of all time at super middleweight, light heavyweight and pound for pound

i would say between 10th and 15th best pound for pound fighter ever and possibly the greatest super middleweight ever and in the top 5 light heavyweights of all time

Top 50. Lower half. Maybe around the mid thirties.

That's pound for pound of course.

Agree with Hitman, somewhere between 35-50, anywhere from 25-75 would be reasonable, can't see him higher than that.

Head-to-head, the best SMW ever (Calzaghe #1 for achievement, though). One of the top twenty LHW's of all-time, & that's a rich division.

Haven't considered his pound-for-pound standing.

jones is hard to rank all-time because he never had the accomplishments of other greats plus the overall level of his opponents was avg. if you go on accomplishments and who he beat he's probably only top 30. if you measure him at his best against others at their best, i think he's probably one of the five best fighters i've ever seen. i think he'll get his due in the years down the line as the most talented fighter ever.

Hard to be sure of the head-to-head, though, when the competition was as you noted. I have no doubt we witnessed a phenomenally-talented fighter, but those types of men have come unstuck before when faced with the truly gargantuan scenario & similarly-intense adversary. We will never know with Jones, but he could certainly shake almost anyone up. I can't name a better 168lber in the division's (admittedly-short) history.

#5 middleweight and well above Hopkins who is nowhere in sight. Over the slow fisted Monzon certainly. A true Sugar Ray

One win over Hopkins at 160 doesn't push him into the top 40, let alone top 10 at middleweight.

Extremely athletically gifted fighter but boxing is not track and field. Roy to me showed his true colors in the Tarver rubber match and in much deeper eras his record would have been littered with more losses. And whose the best light heavyweight he beat . . .Virgil Hill?

More than athletically gifted; Roy KNOWS how to win. Infact, winning came to Roy as easily as breathing. james Toney and Hopkins will attest to that

So dont try to take away rightful credit for beating a man many say is a top five middleweight. Roy was advanced and showed Bernard why he is rightfully at the top at the middleweight rankings

Tarver? That fight came after the fall which I dont count.

Hopkins became a Top5 Middleweight, he wasn't close to one then. No way Roy cracks the top 10 in one of the most stacked divisions in history off of one win. That's insanity, but he was capable of beating just about anybody.

Hopkins doesn't make my top 10 at 160, let alone top 5, which I think is a pretty overblown ranking for him.

Even then, beating one fighter, regardless of where they are ranked, doesn't automatically put them higher than that fighter in an all-time sense. Case in point, Sam Langford beat ATG lightweight Joe Gans, yet you'll never see Langford ranked among the top 10 lightweights.

If you aren't counting the Tarver fights at all you are simply being an irrational fanclub member.

Somewhere in the Top 100 probably, Somewhere between 51 and 100 though.

I need to come up with my ATG list soon if these kinds of questions are gonna keep coming up in rapid succession.

To me, The great Roy Jones, Jr., a gifted boxer that fought most of his fights with bums, policemen and teachers, is not no where in the top 50 all time.

He is probably a top 15 light heavyweight and a top 5 super middleweight. Not a top 15 middleweight by any means.

Very hard to rank him really because his resume isn't as deep as it should be and any rating would be mostly based on his Frankish abilities.

Agreed. He was an outstanding talent, but so many other guys beat far better competition. Ranking him (and a few other guys who had great talent but didn't fight good overall competition) is hard. If you never saw him fight and were just going by who beat (and when he beat him) he doesn't belong in the top 50.
Going by film, you would think he would be in the top 50. However, he was so unorthodox, it's hard to imagine how well he would have done against other great fighters who were more orthodox, and who had decent power.

Except Ali beat 7 HOFers, 3 of them who are generally ranked as top 10 ATG HWs so no it doesn't fit perfectly at all.
