It's more of a society thing.

Coming from an Asian background, i'll tell you myself there are lots who use the term "Brother" to refer to someone, just as much as they would use "mate" or "pal" etc.

Considering they both have the same thing in common, Boxers coming from ethnic minorities, it's understandable why he used it.

Some do- and also some Christians do.

When I was younger, I went on a Christian camp, and the adults were "Uncle" and "Aunty" and the fellow campers were "brother" or "sister."

There are many words people use for someone they know, generally like, assosiate with or feel they are on the same wave length, some examples : Mate, Bro, fellow, bruv, geezer, pal, brother, man etc etc. Are you telling me you have never referred to someone as 'mate' like 'yes mate' to someone you dont really know and is not infact a 'mate'?? It's a figure of speech which Im sure you'll find many people say unconciously, they dont directly mean it as literal, its likely you have used one of the above like 'mate' to someone you dont even know so stop being so anal One of the most pointless posts Ive seen.

The point is, that only asian guys use the term "brother" to each other and so when Hamed used that term, he was trying to identify himself with a particular race and faith. In my experience, no-one exept asian guys use the term "brother", so it's used to seperate themselves from the host community and it's done on for that reason. He know's Khan about as well as i do, i doubt that he has visited him once at home or in his gym, so why can't he just turn up for the fight and watch like everyone else, instead of coming out with insincere crap. He has to try and emphasize the faith and it suggests that he is only supporting Khan because he follows the islamic faith, where as everyone else supports Khan because he is a fighter that they like to watch and (mostly) want to win. It's Hamed trying to be contraversial.

Same as alot use the term 'mate', you could say the same as 'only' white guys use this term, you could say only black guys use the term 'man'....It's not a race issue, its more of a case of what you mainly hear growing up in a community, coming out with mate, pal, dude, bro, man, brother, geezer, bruv etc I'm sure its just mainly done subconciously...mate! As I said in the post you quote, plus my earlier reply, it is not just "Asians"* who refer to each other as "brother." Some christians also do. A catholic preist is of course "Father." "Brothers and Sisters in Christ" etc.

I say 'bruv' all the time, occasionally 'brother' but that's usually in a more ironic sense, it's kind of expected in cockney territory that you make an effort with the colloquialisms.

I tell you what DID get my goat, this wasn't last night, but it leads up to it. I was watching a show, ITV, Khan was undercard and Danny Williams was main event. Hamed is ringside, someone pops over for a chat, and Hamed declares to the viewers he is 'here to support my fellow Muslim, Amir Khan'.... what about Danny Williams mate, he's a Muslim too? Maybe he meant it in the sense of 'fellow Asian', and for all I know him and Amir are mates in real life, so I couldn't give a toss if he calls him 'brother', nor should anyone else, IMO.

If he'd said 'He's my Lover!', well then, maybe some questions could have been asked ringside, as it were.

People that practise Islam refer to fellow muslim men as brothers, just like in days gone by Christians would do the same thing, its not at all racial, its religiousism if thats a word
