Pinklon Thomas-Mike Weaver

There is presently video of this fight on the net. Weaver and especially Pinklon are two favourites of mine, so it's cool! I didn't see Pinklon Thomas fight until his match against (yikes) Mike Tyson, and then his last fight as a major contender when he faced Evander Holyfield. Think Pink! :box:

Thanks for the link.
Both these guys are fun to watch. I love the consistency
of Pinky's jab when he was on good form.

Yeah, I agree. Pinklon at the time was getting cover stories from the boxing media, and was apparently very outspoken about wanting to get Larry Holmes in the ring. Holmes at the time was if I remember from the articles correctly was I felt crossing the line in his comments about Thomas's at least at the time former drug addiction during his youth. Trash talk likely, but both guys (Thomas and Holmes) were definitely talking about the possibility of the fight before they both lost their titles. :box:

Holmes would have gotten the decision or maybe a late stoppage
against Pink. Holmes was more consistent and his jab and right
stayed more accurate and solid during the later stages of the
fight.

Pinklon while possesing a lovely jab, seemed to throw it with less
snap when he needed it to get him out of trouble in the testing
fights.

One thing to remember is that Weaver was coming off a bad knockout previous to that fight. In November of 1984 he fought Tony Anthony, the records show it as disq win. What happened was that after the bell to end the first, Weaver turned to return to his corner. Anthony somehow(?) didn't hear the bell and ran up behind Weaver and struck him in the back of the head knocking Weaver cold. Weaver didn't even know it was coming. Naturally Anthony was DQ'd for the blatant & flagrant foul but Weaver suffered more damage than he even did when Don King got Michael Dokes the title. Of course Weaver had to take the WBC opportunity against Thomas but I feel his ability to take a punch was hurt by the incident. I even think if not for that night in Vegas with Anthony, he might have beat Pinklon.

knockers always say Holmes avoided the likes of Page coetzee thomas or a witherspoon rematch

but to be honest all those fighters never fought consistantly and would usually follow up a good win with a crap loss...so holmes legend isnt really troubled.

True enough, but it is no fallacy to state Holmes wanted nothing to do with anyone who gave him a hard time.

He gave his best shot against Tyson, but he got incredibly exhausted. I watched the fight live on TV, and have since felt that if it wasn't for Angelo Dundee, it could've been stopped after the pummeling Thomas somehow survived in the first round. Then, when Holyfield-Thomas was made, I felt like it was a good match up, but Thomas was as slow as The Mummy, had nothing at the time. No spark like he at least exhibited against Tyson. Strange fight. He even looked older than 30.

After this fight KO installed Thomas their number one at HW and demoted Larry to number 2.

Holmes was trying to find guys who were acceptable opponents but not too much of a threat in order to get to 50-0.

I do agree though that many of the names thrown at Holmes these days never got any kind of momentum behind them.

If Thomas had fought Holmes after beating Weaver I’d have bet on Thomas. Of course he lost his next fight to Berbick so who knows…

The funny thing is Holmes got flack at the time for fighting Witherspoon but in hindsight he was IMO the best overall of the 80s ABC titlists. I know Thomas beat him in what was probably his best career performance but I don't think he was a better overall fighter than Witherspoon.
