Doesn't PPV depend more on the popularity of the fighters though? I mean as exciting as David Haye is he isn't as well known as say Hatton or Khan. I could sit in a pub with a dozen mates who know nothing about boxing and ask them who Hatton and Khan are and they'll say "boxers" ask them who David Haye is though I'll get "David who?" same if I asked them about Carl Froch. Very few of them could tell you who the Klitschko brothers are never mind who Valuev is. Sky and Haye are going to have to do some serious hyping of this event to increase PPV sales - no doubt they'll go down the David and Goliath route.

This fight we sell, Haye got good viewing figures on Setanta.

Where are these figures of which you speak? I've not seen any amazing figures being touted around.

I am sick of paying through the nose for boxing quite frankly. You can watch the world cup or champions league finals for free, why do we have to pay for everything in boxing?

I won't pay for this, but would have done for Haye v Wlad or Vitali.

i dont think i will buy this fight... i like Haye, but Valuev fight will be a bit shite

if there is a good undercard or a big yank bill on after i will buy it... but i dont think Haye has the strengh & depth in his stable to make it worthy

Just reminds us what we lost with Setanta going under, we got 2 quality cards for £12 a month and it was practically free on my Virgin package

To be honest though I'd rather pay £15 for a quality card than pay £15 a month for no decent cards as was often the case with Sky Sports.

I'm a bit disapointed it isnt a Klitschko in the other corner but I will buy it anyway. This could be 2009s answer to Dempsey-Willard

Its his job to approach and sell it to sky not the other way round Hopefulyl we get the Froch fight for free, but more likely it'll be on this new ITV PPV thing

I of course understand this, but this is partly due to dwindling viewing figures, or dwindling exposure. Terrestrial TV still has lots of money to spend, and Sky can still make big bucks from advertising.

However, as boxing has slipped down the greasy pole and become less and less mainstream, this has meant that to pay fighters massive wage demands boxing fans must now pay through the nose.

Frankly, I'm sick of it.

It isn't going to get any easier James.
No one else is remotely interested in boxing other than Sky.
They have deals with Hatton, Haye PPV, Hearn, Maloney.
Up for grabs are Hennessey, Hayemaker, Wazza, Hobson, Khan PPV.

I think the deal's already done with Wazza / Khan.
Will they be interested in any of the others ?

I think Hayemaker will get some dates Lindsay is a good fighter British champ. I can't see Frocch next fight not being shown live.

I wonder how many people in the UK have sky sports? I cannot find the figures anywhere but they must be in the public domain somewhere surely?

There over 60,000,000 people in the UK, almost that number of people have access to a TV set and therefore the BBC.

Who wouldn't be interested in a free, prime-time world heavyweight title fight with local interest? The problem is, that boxing just isn't on the agenda for BBC, and ITV are in dire financial straights.

I have to say, that boxers themselves have to be held somewhat accountable, because although boxing is pretty much a minority sport now, they still want to command huge fees.

The only way to support those fees....you guessed it PPV.

As with most sports James - it's only the top 2% that gobble up 85% of purses.
I don't think it's fair to generalise boxers as all getting huge fees.
I think the purse bid of just over £100k for Macklin / Barker was very much the exception rather than the rule, so the challenger would be getting a little over £40k.
Take off board tax, promotors fees, trainers fees, training fees then income tax and it isn't as spectacular as it first seems.
