Going in, what was your prediction for Ali v Foreman ?
Mine was Foreman in 6. Everyone I knew was saying this will be the end of Ali, he's going to get slaughtered.

I stuck with him through two Liston fights, and saw George as a very similar entity.....I fully suspected and spoke to anyone who would listen that Ali was going to win.
Did I have my doubts?
NEVER! Well except every damn time George through a big shot that night. We all saw how he flattened so many greats....you couldn't help but be a bit unsure. That's what made that night so irresistable and magnetic to the entire world.

From 1972 through the start of the 4th round, I picked Foreman by stoppage.
From the start of the 4th round - when Ali landed a bone-rattling combination that seemed to hurt George - to about the middle of the 5th round, I had it a "pick 'em" fight.
From about the middle of the 5th round forward, I picked Ali by stoppage.
Before the fight I thought, to use the words of the immortal Tony Galento, that Foreman would "moider da bum."

Wait, I didn't read the title well enough and must withdraw my contribution at this point.
Far to youthful to contribute to this thread. Please accept my apology.

What's always amazed me about this fight, is that (in my opinion) Ali didn't win because he had the right strategy, but rather because he simply convinced himself he could take anything Foreman hit him with. Just the case of one guy refusing to lose, and Foreman did hit Ali with some huge shots in Kinshasa. That rope a dope strategy wasen't blocking everything.

I really believed that Foreman could kill him, I kid you not.

I was not a twinkle in my father’s eye when this fight took place, but an observation if you'll indulge me.
The first Ali Liston fight was a massive upset but at least people could think they had under estimated Ali. By 1974, having seen Ali's glory days as well as him getting beat by Frazier and Norton I imagine it must have seemed you knew everything you needed to know about him as a fighter.
I'm sure I'd' have picked Foreman by mid to late round stoppage.

..i picked foreman by a knockout (and by knockout i include what some people refer to as tko.)
Once again boxbuzz contradicts himself so he can get two posts on one thread.

I didn't follow boxing at that time. The first fight I ever watched properly (and what got me hooked) was Carlos Palomino vs Dave 'Boy' Green.
The way Big George looked smashing Frazier and Norton together with how Ali was struggling with consistency would mean to me only a brave man would have picked Ali.
I have since read The Ring etc from that era and as I recall the 'experts' were all predicting Foreman to decapitate Ali.
Reg Gutteridge always claimed that he polled the 50 press men there and 49 were going for Foreman with the sole exception being Colin Hart. Not sure how true that is. And though Harty always boasts about it, it aint really important as he ALWAYS picked Ali, even in the Holmes debacle.

I thought that Ali might win on points (if he could keep moving and jabbing) or Foreman would knock him out. I never imagined that Ali would lay on the ropes for long periods and then K.O Foreman! - that really surprised me.

Now hold on G.I, he is far to familiar with all the subtle nuances of bubble wrap not to be a boxing expert., in this area of boxing knowledge, he is beyond a shadow of a doubt the definitive "go to" man on this forum. So though he may hold me in disdain, I'll not hear another cross word spoken against him.

You can call it a cross word if you must, but you can't call it a lie.

With all the practice you get with churlish, immature mud-slinging, some generic line about drinking is the best you could muster?
Hmph. What a parody of yourself you've become.

I believe that's someone who can make something fantastic metastasize.
Or someone who is capable at any moment to create something fantastic out of household components.

Irene, for a young girl, you've got a very dirty mouth. You need to lay off the alcopops.
Why don't you entertain me with another of your ridiculous threads. The last one (sliding greats?) was hilarious.

Definition update.....Fantasist: a soda jerk assistant. Only assisting with Fanta. So that makes them a specialist.

I think the real question here is as follows.
What sort of man would come onto a boxing board calling himself "Irene"?
